Hoop wrap: Cold Lady Bears fall to Lumberton in 20-4A opener Van Wade The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — LITTLE CYPRESS - Too many missed point-blank shots and bad free-throw shooting spelled doom for the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears in their District 20-4A opener Tuesday night against Lumberton at the Bear Cave. The Lady Bears (3-6, 0-1) forced the Lady Raiders (4-6, 1-0) into 32 turnovers and outrebounded them 44-33 but the poor shooting was way too much to overcome. The Lady Bears took the lead at 44-43 midway through the fourth period after trailing 41-36 but Lumberton forced LC-M into six turnovers in the final four minutes and Lady Raider Kendall Johnston converted 6-of-7 free throws down the stretch to help seal it. LC-M had too many missed layups and finished 3-of-12 from the free-throw line. Post Shelby Apperson, despite being “mugged†all night long, led the Lady Bears with 14 points and a whopping 19 rebounds. Fellow post Tiffani Thompson had nine points and six boards. Point Kaylynn Harkness had nine points, all coming in the first half. Elissa Tate had six points and five rebounds while Michelle Rigsby pulled down five boards. Post Shelby Bingham paced the Lady Raiders with 14 points and six rebounds. Rachel Kemp had 10 points and six rebounds. Sandy Drake had nine points and six rebounds while Johnston finished with eight points and seven rebounds. The Lady Raiders finished 15-of-20 from the free-throw line while LC-M finished with 20 turnovers. The contest was tight throughout. The Lady Raiders led 23-22 at intermission and 36-34 at the end of the third period. The Lady Bears will compete in the Orangefield Tournament Thursday through Saturday.

source: kogt The UIL released its All-Century High School Defensive Team and former Mustang DB Kevin Smith was named to the Second Team. He was the only Southeast Texan named to the team besides BCP's Bubba Smith who was a First Team selection. Smith help lead WOS to back to back 4A State Championships in '86-'87 earning All-State honors on both sides of the ball. Smith was also a letterman in baseball, basketball and track and field. He still owns the all-time Aggie interception record with 20 and he helped the Dallas Cowboys win three Super Bowls. [img][Hidden Content]] www.kogt.com

LC-M's Sicktich makes All-State again VAN WADE The Orange Leader For the second straight year, Little Cypress-Mauriceville senior Christine Sicktich has landed on the Texas Girls Coaches Association All-State Team. Sicktich was the key cog in leading Coach Vicki Castino’s Lady Bears to their second straight District 20-4A Championship. The Lady Bears finished 32-8 and advanced to the area round of the playoffs. Sicktich, the District 20-4A Most Valubale Player this year and two-time All-Orange Leader MVP, led the Lady Bears with 425 kills and was 935-of-1,048 on attacks. She was also good on 570-of-620 serves and led the way with 132 aces and scored 627 service points. She was also second on the squad in assists (501)and digs (405). Also, what a lot of people didn’t know is that she played with a stress fracture in her foot for more than half of the 20-4A season. Only two other Southeast Texas-area players made the elite unit. Warren’s Alyssa Hatton made the Class 2A unit while West Hardin’s Alyson Vanya landed on the Class 1A squad.
