Released by MIF04 SETXSPORTS.COM BASEBALL ‘TOP TEN’ WEEK FIVE It was a week of big wins and tough losses for some of our area teams. An even bigger week looms ahead: Silsbee at Bridge City…Huffman at Barbers Hill…Vidor at PNG…Nederland at LCM. It may be a day late, but here it is nonetheless: Our Week Five “Baseball Top Tenâ€: 1. BRIDGE CITY The Cardinals hold on to the top spot courtesy of a 3-0 week, including a ‘shouldn’t have been this hard’ win vs. HF, the expected run rule vs. WOS and then a Saturday matinee over Kelly. Chase Warner had 2 HRs for the Cards who face a tough week ahead: @ HJ on Tuesday (this could be the Hawks’ last stand), home on Friday vs. Silsbee (game of the week?) and then another Saturday game against #10 Buna. By the way…why do they play Silsbee twice before they even play Jasper once? 2. BARBERS HILL The Eagles continue to dominate their district, outscoring last week’s opponents 31-1. OF Colby Townley is now at 6 HR (1 off the area lead) as BH is simply thrashing their opponents. A key matchup looms this week as they host Huffman on Tuesday night. Hales vs. Listi? 3. PORT NECHES GROVES The Indians remained undefeated in district play with a 7-3 win over archrival Nederland and a 10-1 victory against Lumberton. The mound duo of Harrington and Flores has been ‘nails’ throughout district play and there is no apparent reason to think this will change…although the Pirates from Vidor will try to do just that when they come a callin’ on Tuesday night. 4. WEST BROOK The Bruins spent last Friday night in their own ‘personal heck’, losing again at Baytown Sterling…this time on a walk off homer in the bottom of the 7th. They did pound the Ganders from Lee earlier in the week and remain poised to secure their playoff spot in 21-5A but Friday brings another tough road game…at perennial district power, Humble. 5. SILSBEE What a difference a week makes…certainly if you’re the Tigers. Friday night’s come from behind 6-3 win over Jasper was huge. Staff ace Joel Schooling hung tough after falling behind 2-0, kept his team in the game and then let the bats do the work late. They host the Bobcats from OF on Tuesday in preparation for a ‘revenge’ game on Friday at Bridge City. 6. LCM The Bears squeaked by…one run wins against both Ozen and Dayton. But that’s the point, isn’t it? Just keep winning. Which is exactly what Griff’s 2007 edition is doing. The host a desperate Nederland team on Tuesday before traveling to Lumberton on Friday. Expect Tuesday’s game to be (ahem) intense. 7. VIDOR Probably no one needed a win more than the Pirates did last Friday, outlasting Central 14-9. This came on the heels of a 14-11 loss to Dayton and the injury to star SS VJ Bunner. While there is no doubt that Coach Green needs VJ back, what he really needs is for his pitching to step up and keep the proverbial dam from breaking. A tough week looks with a trip to undefeated PNG and a home tilt vs. Ozen (who is bound to win a game sooner or later, right?). 8. JASPER Up 2-0 late in their game against Silsbee, it was 2006 all over again: Silsbee rallies and Jasper loses 6-3. This was no doubt a bitter pill for the Bulldogs who had hoped to rid themselves of last year’s sour taste. Coach Mixon can take comfort this week with ‘should be’ wins against Kirbyville and OF. Then they can look forward to Bridge City. 9. HUFFMAN The Falcons 4-1 win against Forest Brook leaves a lot to be desired after the week prior’s loss to New Caney. They have a prime opportunity to make a huge statement on Tuesday when they travel to Mont Belvieu to tangle with the Barbers Hill Eagles. This game should be worth the drive. 10. BUNA Another 2-0 week for the undefeated Cougars. They have but 1 district game this week (Anahuac) but do have a special Saturday game… a ‘looking for some respect’ game at Bridge City. ON THE LIP, OUT OF BOUNDS AND WHO KNOWS? The Dayton Broncos claimed win vs. Ozen and Vidor before dropping a 5-4 decision to LCM. They have Central and Nederland this week. Nederland won the battle of the “0-fers’ when they defeated Ozen 3-0. They are hanging by a thread in that district. HJ has BC this week and need a win desperately to claw their way back into the race while Ozen has fallen to the ranks of irrelevant. Whew…and we thought they might be a playoff team. Good luck to all this week. And we’ll be on time next week…I promise.

SETXSPORTS.COM WAS THE FIRST TO REPORT THE STORY!! Smoaky.com and setxsports.com has learned John Tyler head football coach Thomas Brooks has accepted at Jasper High School. Brooks met with his assistants Monday morning and according to one coach said, "this is the toughest decision I've ever had to make, but I have to do what's best for my family." He informed his players during athletic period on Monday after meeting with John Tyler principal Dr. Mike McFarland. When contacted before the press conference, Coach Brooks said, "This was the hardest one, I thought it would never be more difficult than when I left Jasper...but today was one of the hardest days of my life. We had some changes here at John Tyler that really affected my change of heart, including Dr. McFarland leaving for Illinois. In the past, principal changes have not gone well for me...I rely on a principal's philosophy as much as anything when looking at a job, and Dr. McFarland and I had very similar views, we aren't win at all cost people...it should always be about the kids. This decision will also allow me to be closer to my mom, and that's a big deal at this time, and I've never been an athletic director either, and that opportunity is also there for me in Jasper." Approval at board meeting was Tuesday at Noon.

Family, friends hold bedside vigil for Ray HACKENSACK, N.J. -- More than two dozen of Jason Ray's family and close friends were at his hospital bedside Sunday, holding a vigil as the University of North Carolina mascot lay gravely injured after being hit by an SUV. The 21-year-old senior remained on life support and in extremely critical condition Sunday, two days after he was run down near his hotel in Fort Lee. Ray, who suited up as UNC's ram mascot, Rameses, was in New Jersey for the NCAA men's basketball tournament, a portion of which is being played at the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford. Ray's father, Emmitt, who flew to New Jersey in a friend's private plane after getting word of his son's life-threatening head injuries on Friday, said doctors hold out little hope for his son's recovery "short of the intervention of the Lord." The UNC mascot had run out to get a burrito and a coke at a nearby convenience store Friday afternoon, and was walking back to his hotel along Route 4 when he was struck from behind by an SUV. The driver stopped immediately to call 911. No charges have been filed. Ray's top-seeded Tar Heels fell to Georgetown 96-84 in overtime on Sunday to miss out on a spot in the coveted Final Four. It was to be Ray's chance to entertain his biggest crowd ever. "We've known Jason since he was 11 years old -- he is an awesome kid," said Jodi Stewart, a neighbor of the Ray family who attends the same church in Concord, N.C. "I never knew a kid who was more full of life. He was excited every day. He loved what he was doing, he loved God, his family, and being the school's mascot. We have not given up hope." Stewart said about 30 of Ray's family and friends were at Hackensack University Medical Center Sunday, including his parents, Emmitt and Charlotte Ray, two brothers, and five high school friends who lived with Ray in Chapel Hill, N.C. Two students wearing UNC sweat shirts on the hospital grounds declined to speak with a reporter Sunday afternoon. Stewart said the Rays had Jason when they were in their 40s, and devoted a lot of time to their son. "They cherish this boy. You cannot put into words what this child means to them," she said. "Jason is their life. They live their life for him." Stewart said Ray was an Eagle scout and was involved in his church. While in high school at Jay M. Robinson High School in Concord, Ray was often seen cheering in the stands at basketball games, she said. Ray's dad told The Star-Ledger that his son "absolutely loved" dressing up as Rameses, despite the costume's bulk. "It was his way of supporting the team," said Emmitt Ray. "There are things you just can't explain," he continued. "He just happened to be in the wrong place at the right time. He wasn't doing anything he wasn't supposed to be doing. He was 200 yards from the hotel." Police said Gagik Hovsepyan, 51, driver who hit Ray, had a valid driver's license and did not appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. His son was asleep in the SUV at the time, police said. At 6-foot-5, Jason Ray was such a commanding presence that when UNC Coach Roy Williams first met him in the campus gym, he wondered aloud why Ray wasn't on his team. "I'm too slow and I can't jump," Jason told Williams. "But I can be of assistance in other ways, coach." Ray was to graduate in May with a 3.6 GPA, majoring in business administration with a minor in religion. He had a sales and marketing job lined up in nearby Raliegh, N.C. Busch fends off Burton in Car of Tomorrow debut BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Kyle Busch earned the honor as the first winner in a Car of Tomorrow Sunday in the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Busch held off Jeff Burton by a few feet in a side-by-side overtime finish when the race ended with a green-white-checkered showdown after a late caution. Pole-winner Jeff Gordon overcame early handling problems to finish third. Tony Stewart led 257 of the first 289 laps, but a fuel problem ended his chances of winning the race.
