Thomas, Bean highlight Battlin' Bear Relays Van Wade The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — It was a fine day for athletes across Southeast Texas in what was one of the best Battlin’ Bear Relays Saturday afternoon at LC-M High School. Ten new area-best marks were set at the 14th annual event, with several Orange County athletes involved in the mix. LC-M senior distance runner Drew Bean capped off his final official race on his home turf, running the 1,600 meters in a swift time of 4:22.56, besting his previous area-best of 4:24.61. “I felt really strong throughout,†Bean said. “It was windy conditions but I felt really great all the way through. It’s still tough because I’m basically still just running against the clock with no one really pushing me. I’m just preparing myself hard for the Texas Relays that are coming up soon and just trying to stay in the best condition that I can.†West Orange-Stark produced a new local leader in the fastest race at a meet as Mustang senior Earl Thomas sprinted to a best mark of 10.53 seconds, besting Bridge City’s Cody Mills, who has run a 10.62. It was the first time Thomas, who anchors the Mustangs’ three powerful relays, ever ran the 100 competitively in high school. “It felt good to get my feet wet in this event,†Thomas said. “I think a lot of people around have been second-guessing my speed, so I felt like I had something to prove.†“Are you kidding me, the kid comes out here and runs a 10.53 without running it all year,†said Mustang head track coach Toby Foreman. “He never ceases to amaze me.†WO-S swept all three relay events. The Mustang 400 relay team of Thomas, Dominique Rhodes, Calvin Carter and Josh Gloston won with a time of 42.78. The 800 relay unit consisting of Rhodes, Carter, Seth Thomas and Ronnie Dennis claimed first with a 1:33.02 and the 1,600-meter relay unit of Thomas, Josh Gloston, Jerald Gloston and Nick Reed was first with a 3:28.97. Foreman had to adjust his relay teams a little with an injury to senior standout Jacoby Franks but the Mustangs passed with flying colors Saturday. “Calvin Carter, what else can I say about that sophomore, he had a tremendous day stepping in on the relays,†Foreman said. “To top it off, he wins the 200 too.†Carter won the 200 in 22.90. The Lady Mustangs had plenty to hoot about as well in setting two area marks. Hannah Mobley blistered the track in the 200, running a 26.51, surpassing Silsbee’s Chasity Gilder, who had run a 27.08. The 800-meter relay unit of Mobley, Vanquanisha Jordan, Dominique Riggs and Brittney Scott set a new best in the 800-meter relay with a time of 1:46.83. The same quartet also ran a 50.87 to take the 400-meter relay. That capped off a solid day for Jordan, who was also first in the long jump (17-2 1/2), second in the triple jump (32-6) and second in the 200 meters (27.60). “I felt so great after the long jump,†Jordan explained. “I knew I could hit 17 feet and I was so disappointed because by best jump was 16-4 going into the last jump. But on the last one, I just nailed it.†LC-M notched a new area leader in the high jump. Senior Phillip Richard, in his first track meet of the season, high jumped 6-4, surpassing Vidor’s Jared Williams, who had gone 6-2 this season. Vidor’s Jared Parker upped his 13-6 area mark in the pole vault four inches by going 14 feet. Nederland Lady Bulldog Markee Johnson set a new standard in the girls pole vault with a nine-foot effort. Nederland’s Brock Walker was double-trouble as the Bulldog standout hurdler topped his previous area-best in both the 110-meter hurdles (14.00) and the 300-meter hurdles (40.05) Nederland teammate Phillip Rogers got lower on his area-best in the 800 meters with a sparkling 1:58.26. Nederland captured both the boys and girls team crowns. The Lady Bulldogs piled up 164 1/2 points, easily outdistancing East Chambers (107) and WO-S (105). The Bulldog boys tallied 158 points with WO-S (138) taking second and LC-M (111) third. LC-M big man David Sicktich tallied 18 points for his team, nabbing first in the discus (141-8 1/4) and second in the shot put (42-6 1/2). The Mustangs received a first-place finish from Reed in the 400 meters (51.53) and Adrian Mims in the shot put (47-4). The next area track meet will be this Friday with Orangefield hosting the 33rd annual Bobcat Relays.

Four local lifters claim bronze Van Wade The Orange Leader ALDINE — Orange County came away with four powerlifters bringing home bronze medals from the State Powerlifting Championships held at the Campbell Center in Aldine Saturday. Little Cypress-Mauriceville seniors Chris Sonnier and Kevin Greer nabbed third-place in their divisions along with Bridge City’s Justin Norman and West Orange-Stark’s Mario Rose. Sonnier placed third in the 114-pound class with 1,040 pounds. Greer was third in the 132-pound division with 1.095 pounds, setting new personal marks in both the dead-lift (470 pounds) and total weight. “It’s been so great to work with two special kids,†said LC-M powerlifting coach Brian Waguespack. “They left their marks on the powerlifting program. They may not have brought back go ld but they’ll always be winners in my book.†WO-S’ Mario Rose nabbed third in the 181-pound class with 1,355 pounds while teammate Cedric Dantzler was eighth in the 114-pound division with 780 pounds. “It really was a great trip and we’ve had so much fun with those guys this season,†said Mustang coach Randy Crouch. “Mario did a great job all year and Cedric constantly improved. We had two reach state this year, which says a lot, because we had no one qualify last year.†Bridge City, which claimed the Region III team title for the first time in school history earlier this month, had six lifters participate in the state meet. Justin Norman claimed third for the Cardinals in the 198-pound division, lifting a total of 1,410 pounds. Kris Wedekind was sixth in the 198-pound class with 1,365 pounds. Garrett McNeil placed sixth in the 181-pound division with 1,235 pounds. Tim Sharp was seventh in the 132-pound class with 1,045 pounds. Kurt Moerbe claimed seventh in the 181-pound division with 1,225 pounds and Clint DeRouen, who had a great senior season did extremely well in the bench and squat but had to scratch after the dead-lift. “We were really looking to do better at state but it doesn’t take anything away from what has been a great season,†said Cardinal coach Kevin Jones. “The kids were able to claim the school’s first-ever regional team championship and I’m so thrilled for our seniors. The best thing about it is that we have three of the kids coming back next year.â€

NBA scolds Arenas for making $10 bets with fans WASHINGTON -- Gilbert Arenas was admonished by the NBA for making $10 bets with fans during the Washington Wizards' loss at Portland on Wednesday. "We spoke to Gilbert and explained the issue to him," NBA spokesman John Acunto said Sunday. "And he assured us he wouldn't do anything like this again." Arenas made the bets as he bantered with fans throughout the Wizards' 100-98 loss. He was booed during pregame introductions and whenever he touched the ball because he had promised to score 50 points against the Trail Blazers. After the game, Arenas said he bet a fan $10 that he would make the winning basket. He missed badly -- throwing up a shot that fell short of the rim -- and finished with only 19 points. "I owe somebody 10 bucks," Arenas said. "I bet a fan if I had a chance I would make the last shot." Arenas later elaborated on his nba.com blog, saying that he made $10 bets with two fans during the game and had obtained their e-mail addresses so that he could pay them off. The NBA since has removed the references to the bets from the blog. Arenas was not available for comment Sunday, a day off for the Wizards during their West Coast road trip. FUNNY CAR DRIVER ERIC MEDLEN DEAD DRIVER ERIC MEDLEN SUCCUMBS TO INJURIES SUFFERED IN TESTING ACCIDENT March 23, 2007 DRIVER MEDLEN SUCCUMBS TO INJURIES SUFFERED IN TESTING ACCIDENT GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Eric Medlen, 33, who had emerged as one of the most popular young drivers in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, succumbed Friday afternoon to injuries suffered when his race car crashed into a guardwall during a Monday test session at Gainesville Raceway. The talented Funny Car driver never regained consciousness. After being treated at the track, he was transported by ShandsCair helicopter to Shands at the University of Florida medical center where medical staff treated him for four days for a severe closed head injury. "Eric suffered from severe traumatic brain injury with diffuse axonal injury, or DAI," said Dr. Joseph Layon, Professor of Anesthesiology, Surgery and Medicine and the Chief of Critical Care Medicine at UF. Survival rates associated with DAI are low. "On Tuesday, UF and Shands neurosurgery team performed a cranjectomy and removed the front portion of the skull to relieve pressure and attempt to improve blood flow to the brain," Dr. Layon explained. “Despite receiving the most aggressive treatment, Eric continued to have uncontrollable intracranial pressure. His body lost the ability to manage it’s salt and water levels and he began displaying the complicating factors associated with DAI. "That is when Eric's family elected to honor Eric's wishes and remove him from the artificial life support systems. Our hearts go out to Eric's loved ones." "On behalf of the family, I want to thank the medical staff at Shands not just for giving Eric the very best care he could have received, but for the compassion it showed for Eric and all those close to him†said his father, John Medlen. "I also want to thank the thousands of people who offered their prayers and support to us during this very difficult time." As recently as Thursday night, more than 100 drivers and crew members representing every Indianapolis-based race team attended a prayer vigil organized by Kelly Bustos, team manager for Tuttle Motorsports, which fields Top Fuel dragsters for 2006 Rookie-of-the-Year J.R. Todd, one of Medlen’s closest friends in the sport. At Louisville, Ky., where BP/Castrol had set up booth space for the Mid-America Trucking Show, fans and well-wishers filled up two giant posters with get well wishes Thursday. Moreover, more than 4,500 individual messages of support were left at a special e-mail address on the first day it was activated. "Eric Medlen was the son I never had," said team owner John Force. "He was the leader of my next generation of drivers. Robert Hight, my daughter Ashley and I were with the family throughout this very difficult time. This loss is a huge blow not only to the Medlen family, but to drag racing and to John Force Racing. I just want to thank everybody for their support, from Larry Smiley with Racers for Christ to the hospital staff to the whole drag racing community. Our prayers go out to the family."
