Lady Mustangs fend off Deweyville, 48-46 Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — Surviving an 8-for-27 performance from the free-throw line and a valiant late comeback by Deweyville, the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs took down the Lady Pirates 48-46 in the season-opener for both squads at Mustang Gym Tuesday night. A rebound and putback by Ryshaniqua Winbush with 0:21 remaining gave the Lady Mustangs the lead for good and guard Demetrius Heard hit a free throw with 0:10 left to make it a two-point margin. The Lady Bears tried to knot things up by going to superb post player Marley Moss with less than three seconds left but WO-S stole the ball and held on for the victory. “Going 8-for-27 from the free-throw line is awful,†said Lady Mustang coach Callie Orebo. “They’re called free throws for a reason and we have to take advantage of it. They know what they’ll be working on hard the rest of the week.†Heard led the Lady Mustangs with 18 points. Winbush had 10 points and eight rebounds and sophomore Jasmine MaGee added 10 points and six boards. The Lady Pirates trailed by as much as 40-25. But sparked by Moss, Deweyville went on a 21-5 tear and took a 46-45 lead after a strong drive to the hoop by Moss with 0:32 remaining. Moss finished with a powerful double-double, tallying 20 points while yanking down 13 rebounds. “Our kids just scrapped and scrapped all the way to the end and I’m so pleased about that,†said Lady Pirate head coach Melanie Hamerly. “West range will be one of the most physical teams we’ll face all year and I thought the kids held their own with them. They can hold their heads up high. They probably played a 3A playoff team tonight and it’s something to build on.†The Lady Pirates struggled as well from the charity stripe, going just 11-of-26. “We both had our opportunities at the line,†said Hamerly.â€Coach Orebo and I both will be stressing free throws in the next few practices.†WO-S led 11-4 at the end of the first period, sparked by seven Heard points. The Lady Pirates got stingy in the second period and pulled to within 19-15 at intermission. The Lady Mustangs went on a 21-12 tear in the third thanks to seven points by MaGee to grab what looked to be a comfortable 40-27 lead going in to the fourth. Maybe too comfortable. “I thought we relaxed too early and started to take some bad shots,†said Orebo. “Give Deweyville credit, they kept battling and battling all the way to the end.†The WO-S pressure bothered the Lady Pirates throughout. Deweyville committed 23 turnovers while WO-S had just nine. Mysheniqua Warnell led WO-S with 11 rebounds. Guard Amber Stanley had seven points for the Lady Pirates while Skylar Webster had five. Kaycee Spears yanked down eight boards for the Lady Pirates. The Lady Pirates return to action next Tuesday when they visit Kirbyville while WO-S will host Hemphill.

Cook a model of consistency for Mustangs Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — Knowing they were going to be youthful on the defensive side of the ball when the season started, West Orange-Stark defensive coordinator Cornel Thompson turned to what he calls his “bell cow†to lead the way. Senior defensive tackle Stephen Cook has filled that bill all season long. Cook has produced 85 tackles this season as the Mustangs (8-2) prepare to take on the Coldspring Trojans (8-2) Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Huffman Stadium in the Class 3A Region III Division II bidistrict playoffs. Cook also has seven tackles for losses, four sacks and three fumble recoveries. Opponents have been aware of Cook for three seasons now. He was the 21-3A Newcomer of the Year in 2007as a sophomore and was a unanimous All-District selection as a junior in 2008. “We all love ‘Cookie’â€,†said Thompson. “He just goes about his business and performs each and every Friday night. He’s been one of the steadiest players that has come through here. He has excellent technique.†Defensive line coach Eddie Dyer echoed the same sentiments. “Stephen is one of those kids that you wish you had three just like him every year,†said Dyer. “I’ve been here 16 years and he ranks right up there as far as being the most consistent. Charles Sias was another one and ‘Cookie†reminds me of him a whole lot.†Cook has certainly led the way for a Mustang defense that has allowed just under 200 yards per game, which ranks as the best in Southeast Texas. Not bad for a group that has started as many as nine underclassmen during certain stretches of the campaign. “I knew we were going to be younger this year and I knew I had to step up and be a leader,†said Cook. “I look back to the 2007 season and remember those great seniors on that team that were always their to lift me up and I wanted to be that type of player this year. My first two years I was pretty quiet but this year I’ve had to be more outspoken and I think I’ve grown in that role pretty good.†One thing that has been certain this year, opponents have been trying to stay away from No. 36 in the blue and silver. “A lot of teams have been running away from whatever side I’m on and that can be frustrating at times,†said Cook. “It also makes me feel good because my teammates have stepped up and made big plays. It just helps us with our gameplan when we know what direction an offense might go.†Thompson loves Cook’s work ethic as well. “He’s so precise out here in practice every day and all of the other kids feed off that,†said Thompson. “His technique is always near perfection and he tackles and wraps up so well. He’s definitely our anchor point. He has excellent leadership qualities. He’s not loud in anyway but he always gets his point across well.†Now that the Mustangs are heading into the “extra†season, Cook has helped keep a lot of his underclassmen defenders on an even keel. “We’re going to have to play Coldspring just like it was any other game,†said Cook. “There is no need to get nervous about anything, the field is still 100 yards long. We’ve played 10 games now, so we have plenty of experience.†“At this point of the season, no team is young anymore, that excuse is over,†said Thompson. “We’ve got 10 games under our belts and they should be ready to go. I’m truly been pleased with the way we’ve performed on defense to this point in the season. The kids have really picked things up pretty well and some have been excellent surprises.†Cook certainly has playing college football on his mind after this season but first things or first. “I would love to go out and win my last high school football game,†said Cook. “That’s a lot of people’s dream but it doesn’t happen to many. We’ve been pretty far my first two years and it sure would be great to go even farther my senior year. That would be awesome.â€

WO-S ready to face Trojans yet again in bidistrict Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — The West Orange-Stark Mustangs will be hoping that the third time is not the “charm†for the Coldspring Trojans when the two teams battle it out Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Huffman Stadium in the Class 3A Region III bidistrict playoffs. The Mustangs (8-2) have made quick work of the Trojans (8-2) in the same bidistrict round the last two seasons, winning 51-14 in 2007 and 36-8 last year. “It should be a great game,†said Mustang head coach Dan Hooks. “Looking back, this one maybe the one we’re most evenly matched in. Coldspring is better than I’ve seen them. We played a young Coldspring team the past couple years. This one has a ton of experience and good senior leadership.†The Trojans are runnerps out of District 22-3A while the Mustangs were second in 21-3A. Coldspring fell to 22-3A champion Cleveland 14-12 two weeks ago in a nailbiter in what was the title game. The Trojans have improved tremendously on the defensive side of the ball. Their defensive coordinator is former Orangefield head coach Blake Morrison, who is in his first year at Coldspring, coaching alongside old friend and Trojan head coach Bryan Barbay. Last season the Trojans allowed over 26 points a game, this season their giving up just 17.3. “Coach Morrison is an excellent defensive coach and gets the kids fired up and ready to go,†said Hooks. “Defensively, they’ve improved a whole bunch. They will blitz and shift a bunch and will try to create some turnovers.†The Trojans are allowing 312 yards per game and will face a Mustang offense that is averaging 310.1. The Mustang offense has hit a nice stride in recent weeks, gaining 880 total yards in that span. They’ve been sparked by a solid ground game led by quarterback Reggie Garrett and running back Darius Mitchell. In the last two weeks Mitchell has had 25 carries for 241 yards while Garrett has 207 yards on 24 totes. “Offensively, we’ve changed things up a bit in recent weeks and we’ve been moving it well, especially on the ground,†said Hooks. “Garrett is really coming of age at quarterback and has done an excellent job running the ball. Mitchell has also giving us a big boost.†Mitchell now has 461 yards and three TDs to lead the WO-S ground attack. Garrett has dashed for 414 yards and 13 TDs and has passed for 1,006 yards and nine TDs. Coldspring will bring plenty of experience on the offensive side of the ball against a stingy Mustang defensive unit that allows just 199.4 yards an outing, led by the likes of Stephen Cook and Wilson Washington. The Trojans are engineered by slick quarterback Chad Allen. “The Allen kid just keeps getting better and better,†said Hooks. “He’s really gotten faster and stronger and has made himself into a great player. He’s one of those natural leaders too.†Allen is far from all the Trojans have. Andrew Leigh, who was nearly a 1,000-yard back last year, has moved to a slotback/receiver spot to make way for junior Tevin Bryant and sophomore Sherman Gilbert. “They have two excellent backs that can go,†said Hooks. “The Leigh kid is an excellent athlete too and you got to watch those reverses and quick pitches to him too. They still like to line up in the Wing T for the most part but they’re also capable of running the spread too. They’re a team that will definitely keep you on your toes.†As usual this time of year, you’ve got to bring your ‘A’ game or it will be a short-lived postseason. “It could easily come down to turnovers and special teams,†said Hooks. “It’s a pretty good little matchup. Our kids are fired up. We had a darn good practice Monday, even though the weather was nasty. We’re looking forward to have a few guys that have been banged up lately to make their return. We feel really good where we’re at right now. A lot of people aren’t as fortunate as we are, and that’s making the playoffs. It’s a game-by-game deal now, there is no looking on down the road. You win and then you move on or you lose and its over. It’s just that simple.â€

Coldspring is similar to Kirbyville, and I think the game will be similar also. Coldspring in the upset of the week.
I disagree with this. I don't think they are quite the team that Kirbyville is. They lost to Corrigan Camden by 15 who got beat bad by Newton. They also lost to Cleveland, who was beat by LCM. Now, I'm not using this to try and say we'll win. They very well may beat us, but they are not Kirbyville.
Their very close according to a Coach! -
WO-S thought the same thing against a weaker HUFFMAN team once also and the outcome was not in favor of the mighty stangs.l let the two teams play the game and decide who wins.in other word bring it don't sing it. Rome out
That was a whole different setup. The DC for WO-S had just returned 3 months before that after leaving for a few years. -

LC-M vs. Ozen updates..LC-M Wins/Comments

Bears fend off late Ozen surge to win 29-28 Van Wade The Orange Leader BEAUMONT — BEAUMONT - To wrap a season in which they made serious strides under first-year head coach Randy Crouch, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears wanted to finish up their season on a high note by downing the Beaumont Ozen Panthers Saturday at Babe Zaharias Stadium. Well, “mission accomplishedâ€, though it was far from easy. After the Bears grabbed a 29-15 lead with 5:19 left, the Panthers rallied back all the way to within a point but the Bears were able to hold on to a 29-28 victory. Junior quarterback Hunter Gonzales completed 12-of-21 passes for 208 yards in the LC-M (4-6, 2-5) win, throwing for two touchdowns while running for two more. The Bears finished with 358 total yards. Brilliant receiver Zack Sonnier had four catches for 93 yards and two touchdowns. Preston Armstrong also had his best outing of the campaign, hauling in five receptions for 82 yards. Tailback Tevvin Jones contributed 73 yards on 12 carries on the ground and also caught three balls for 33 yards. “This was a tremendous way to end the season,†said first-year LC-M coach Randy Crouch. “You can’t call it a great season but it was one in which we made some great strides in. Our seniors, we’re really proud of them. They’ve put forth a ton of effort to help us succeed this year. We’re also thrilled to have a ton of key kids back. This is a football team that learned a lot this year and it will hope us down the road.†The Bear win offset a superb performance by Ozen (3-7, 2-5) quarterback Charles Durio. Durio completed 18-of-32 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns, all to receiver Stanley Sullivan. Sullivan finished with eight catches for 137 yards. “You can’t ever rule out Ozen because they have so much darn talent and they come come at you many different ways,†said Crouch. “We gave up a lot of yards late in the second half but I felt we made the big when it counted most. They got a lot of passing yards but I thought our defense was outstanding pressuring the quarterback. We had some huge sacks today.†Leading 22-15 with 8:23 left in the game, Gonzales calmly led the Bears on a seven-play, 89-yard scoring jaunt. He had a big 39-yard keeper down the left sideline that went to the 50. He hit Armstrong on a 21-yard strike that went to the 30. Three plays later he found Sonnier for a 28-yard scoring dart in the back of the right side of the end zone as the Bears led 29-15 with 5:19 left. Ozen retaliated in a hurry when Durio hooked up with Sullivan on a short pass and Sullivan did the rest by sprinting 42 yards to the end zone down the left side as Ozen trimmed the margin to 29-22 with 4:47 remaining. After the Bears failed to make a first down, the Panthers started at their own 19 with 2:56 left. Mixed in with a couple penalties against the Panthers, Durio ended up throwing for 90 yards on six pass plays to punch the Panthers into the end zone again. He connected with Sullivan again, this time from 21 yards out as the Panthers trailed 29-28 with 1:14 left. However, after a bad snap on the extra-point attempt, Ozen kicker Jose Torres had to kick it late and went straight into the line of scrimmage as it looked like the Bears salvaged the win. The Panthers, though, got a break when they recovered an onside kick at the LC-M 45. The Bears tightened down the hatch to seal the deal, forcing Durio into three incompletions while also sacking him for a loss of eight. LC-M sacked Durio seven times. The Panthers finished with 372 yards but struggled on the ground, managing just 65 yards on 32 carries. The Bears had one of their best running games of the season, finishing with 150 yards on 35 carries. Gonzales added 58 yards on 15 totes. The Bears went up 7-0 late in the first period, cruising 75 yards in just five plays. Jones set things up nicely with a 46-yard burst that went to the Panther 29. After he hit Armstrong on a 14-yard pass play, Gonzales ended up scoring on a nine-yard keeper off left tackle. Kicker Garhett Bonneaux’s extra-point was good as LC-M led 7-0 with 2:38 left in the first. Ozen chewed up 69 yards in eight plays to draw close early in the second period. The Panthers scored when tailback William Sullivan fumbled at the Bear 3 after a 12-yard gain. The ball rolled into the end zone and receiver Jarvis Fontenot recovered it. The extra-point attempt was blocked to make it a 7-6 game with 11:26 left in the half. Ozen jumped ahead with 5:18 in the half when Torres booted a monstrous 52-yard field goal that hit the crossbar and bounced through. LC-M got back in business after defensive back Aldric Jones picked off a Durio pass and returned it 12 yards to the Ozen 42 with 1:4e3 left. Two plays later Gonzales hooked up with “old reliable†Sonnier for a 38-yard scoring dart that bounced off an Ozen defender and into Sonnier’s arms to make it 13-9 with 1:21 left. The Bears went for two points but the pass failed. The Bears went up 20-9 in the third period, zipping 59 yards in just six plays. Gonzales had a 13-yard pass to Sonnier and a 13-yard run in the series and he capped it with a five-yard keeper with 3:28 in the third. Ozen pulled to withing 22-15 with 8:30 left in the game. Leroy Jackson helped set up the TD with a 30-yard run and Durio and Sullivan hooked up again, this time from nine yards out. Gonzales finishes the season completing 150-of-272 passes for 1,686 yards and 11 TDs. Sonnier finishes as the leading receiver in Southeast Texas with 74 grabs for 922 yards and 11 TDs. Jones wrapped up the year with 548 yards and then their is Armstrong, who finishes with 15 catches for 157 yards. The best part, all four of those guys will be back in a Bear uniform next year. “We’re excited about it,†said Crouch. “Most of our skill people are back. I think we’ll improve greatly on defense with a nice offseason. We’re really looking forward to next year.†-

Speaking of young, Silsbee will return 8 offensive and 7 defensive starters for next year. ;) On offense they lose QB, RB, and a WR. On defense they lose 2 DL and 2 LB.
Well, due to injuries (and a suspension) WOS will only be losing 2 on defense (DL and Safety) and 2 on offense (WR and OL). We didn't start out quite as young as we are now, but it's part of the game. Of the 9 underclassmen on defense, 5 are Soph and we also have a Freshman who spells the senior safety.
What a Defense coming back!!! :o -
