Stars president 'sick' of Predators' overall attitude Stars president Jim Lites couldn't believe the lack of acknowledgement by the Nashville Predators when Dallas forward Mike Modano tied and then broke the record for goals scored by an American-born player Saturday, according to a published report. "Their owner, management, public relations people, coaching staff -- I think they all failed the game," Lites told the Dallas Morning News. "It's because of people like Mike Modano that they even have a team in Nashville. He has helped pioneer the game in the South, and for him to be treated like that in a milestone moment ... it's just a horrible thing." Lites' disdain for the Nashville organization wasn't just limited to the events surrounding Modano's record. "I understand it's a competitive situation, but we're also working together to sell the game," Lites told the paper. "They get more money from revenue sharing than any team in the league, they voted against the new schedule because they wanted to have an easier schedule for themselves. They take and take and take and take and never give back, and I'm sick of it." Modano's two goals Saturday gave him 503 for his career, breaking Joe Mullen's record. Modano's accomplishment was never mentioned over the PA system at Nashville Arena.

Barnes Not Interested Monday, March 19, 2007 SPOKANE, Wash. — Forget any of those rumors that Texas Coach Rick Barnes may be headed to Kentucky if the Wildcats fire Tubby Smith. "I don't want any other college job," Barnes said after his fourth-seeded Longhorn team was ousted from the NCAA tournament in the second round, thrashed by fifth-seeded Southern California 87-68. Smith's Cats fell to Big 12 champion Kansas 88-76 in a second-round game Sunday in Chicago, and many wonder if athletic director Mitch Barnhart might make a change after a couple of statements of questionable support the last two weeks. If Smith were dismissed after 10 years that included a national championship in 1998 but no Final Four appearances since, he could be approached by Michigan. His contract calls for a large buyout that one source estimated at $5 million. "We love our jobs here," Barnes said. "I'm not thinking about going anywhere."

NYC HS basketball game turns into soccer riot. Police arrest 21 during melee; gunfire heard in crowd Associated Press NEW YORK -- Teenagers brawled in the stands at a high school basketball game at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night before police cracked down on the melee, which spilled into the streets. Gunfire was heard as the crowd went from the arena to Times Square, police said. No injuries were reported. Twenty-one people, mostly teenagers, were arrested, police said. Some were charged with disorderly conduct or resisting arrest and one was arrested on a riot charge. A 17-year-old male was arrested at a subway station on a charge of criminal possession of a weapon. He was not the one who fired the shots, police said. A WCBS-TV camera crew inside the arena caught images of fights breaking out in the stands, including a girl slapping a boy, who in turn hit her. Other boys then jumped him, and police intervened. The news video also showed police swinging batons at someone who cannot be seen, and the station reported that they were hitting a fan. The police said the incident was under investigation, but had no further comment on the footage. After the crowd spilled into the streets surrounding the arena, police used crowd control tactics, including officers on horseback and in riot gear. Several fights broke out in nearby subways. The Public Schools Athletic League's AA division city championship high school basketball game was between Brooklyn rivals Lincoln and Boys & Girls. The fights started in the third quarter, distracting and displacing many in the crowd of thousands, the New York Times reported Monday. Lincoln won 77-50. Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press

Texas Rangers catcher arrested Laird hauled off in arrested development SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Catcher Gerald Laird was led out of the Rangers clubhouse on Sunday in handcuffs, escorted by two Surprise police officers. "There's no way," Laird said with a dazed and stunned look on his face, a towel covering the handcuffs. Reporters chased after him, trying to find out why he was arrested. "I have no idea," Laird said, before being put in the back seat of a patrol car. There was a rumor going around that he had been hit with a paternity suit and was being taken to police headquarters to give a DNA sample. But that didn't explain the handcuffs. "I'm not at liberty to say," one grim police officer said, ordering a camera crew to get away from the car. "Give him his space. This is not easy for him." Teammate Jerry Hairston ran out of the clubhouse and asked the officers if he could give Laird a message. They gave him permission and Hairston jumped in the back seat. It was then that Laird was told he was the victim of the best and most elaborate practical joke pulled by the Rangers this spring. A few of his teammates were the ones who had the police officers come into the clubhouse and tell him that a former high school classmate had filed a paternity suit. "Man, I thought I was getting a divorce," Laird said with a sheepish smile as he emerged from the squad car with many of his teammates standing outside the clubhouse laughing at him. "Hey, Gerald, did you call your attorney?" Michael Young asked him in the clubhouse. "Who do you think I was going to call, my wife?" shot back Laird, who married the former Kelly Leaton in the offseason and has a child, Berlin Elizabeth. "Hey, Gerald, I'll call my attorney for you!" Sammy Sosa yelled from across the clubhouse. "You know I'd do that for you." It was the best practical joke around here since two years ago when a Surprise officer pulled over Hank Blalock in a 35-mph zone and told him he was clocked at 59. Blalock was also told he would go to jail if he didn't stop arguing. But he never got to experience the feel of handcuffs. "Not good," Laird said. "At first I thought it was a joke, but then they kept going and going on. It was funny at first, then I started to believe it. "I was like, look, you can't arrest somebody for a DNA test." Laird immediately launched his own criminal investigation into the perpetrators. Hairston is considered a leading suspect. "There will be payback," Laird said. "J-Hair, it's going to be a long year for him."

Everett gets more work; Oswalt looks sharp Everett, who missed two games last week with soreness in his lower back, has only 27 at-bats this spring after going 0-for-3 with an RBI. "He's on the short end of at-bats right now," said manager Phil Garner, who likes to have his position players get 55 to 60 at-bats each at spring training. "I've been hitting seventh and I have to play seven innings to get my three at-bats and he's giving me a chance to get them a little sooner," Everett said. Also Sunday, Roy Oswalt looked sharp in his fourth start of the spring Sunday, allowing three runs, one hit and one walk while striking out five over 5 2/3 innings in the Astros' 4-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays at Osceola County Stadium. Oswalt didn't give up a hit until Reed Johnson's one-out, run-scoring double in the sixth. "It wasn't the best outing, but the results turned out pretty well," said Oswalt, who mixed very few curveballs over his 71 pitches. Manager Phil Garner certainly was impressed. "He was outstanding," he said. "That looked like season-ready right there. He threw the ball very crisply, really sharp. He had good breaking balls and good location with his fastball. He had a nice day." Offensively, Carlos Lee went 1-for-2 with a two-run single to raise his batting average to .433 and Brad Ausmus had two hits and an RBI. Outfielder Hunter Pence tripled in his only at-bat and is hitting .593.

Celtics Fined For Contacting Durant's Family

Celtics fined for excessive contact with Durant familyAssociated Press BOSTON -- The Boston Celtics confirmed Sunday that the team had been fined $30,000 by the NBA for excessive contact with the family of University of Texas star freshman and likely lottery draft pick Kevin Durant. General Manager Danny Ainge sat next to Durant's mother during the Big 12 tournament. The league said Ainge violated rules demanding that contact be kept to a minimum between team executives and potential NBA draft picks, until college players officially declare for the draft. Sports Illustrated first reported the story on its Web site. Celtics spokesman Jeff Twiss said Ainge is on the road scouting players and he did not offer specifics of the fine. The Celtics won in San Antonio for the first time in 17 years on Saturday, topping the Spurs 91-85. At 20-46 on the year, the team has the league's second-worst record behind the Memphis Grizzlies.
