  12. Released By MIF04 SETEXsports.com BASEBALL TOP TEN WEEK 4 District play was in full swing this week and that means that half of last week’s Top Ten lost at least one game. Welcome to district play…SETexas style. The big winner of the week had to be the Indians from PNG, claiming two big wins to start district play (Ozen and LCM). The big loser of the week? Drive a few miles to Nederland where the ‘Dogs went 0-2, including a loss to Central. And guess who plays each other Tuesday? Nederland at PNG. Mid-County Madness…and an absolute must win for Nederland. There is one thing different in this week’s Top Ten…we keep the same #1 as the Bridge City Cardinals retain our top spot. Other than that, there’s a whole lot of shakin’ going on: 1. BRIDGE CITY (1) The Cards escaped with a 13-11 win last Tuesday against OF, thanks to a 6 run 7th inning then smoked Kirbyville 13-2. They host the Longhorns from HF on Tuesday (this could be a tough game for ‘em) then travel to WOS on Friday (this shouldn’t be tough game for ‘em). Jeff Stringer was wild as a ‘March hare’ on Tuesday but Philip Meeks returned to form vs. Kirbyville – maybe the most surprising thing this past week was that Johnny Dishon did NOT hit another HR…but he was the winning pitcher vs. OF. 2. BARBERS HILL (3) The Eagles continue to play musical chairs up and down the rankings and won two ‘yawners’ this past week against Forest Brook and Crosby. They should get challenged Tuesday when they host New Caney (4-3 winners last week against Huffman). BH remains solid. Their pitching depth is better than expected and they are raking the baseball offensively. This could be a team ‘custom built’ for a surprising playoff run in their first year up in 4A. 3. WEST BROOK (2) Welcome to 21-5A. The Bruins ride David Murphy’s 3-HR game to knock off powerhouse Kingwood to open district play then squander a brilliant pitching performance by Josiah Svoboda in a 1-0 loss to Atascocita. WB continues the brutal part of their district schedule this week (their first 4 district games are all on the road) when the play at both Baytown schools…including Friday night’s headliner against district favorite Sterling. 4. VIDOR (6) The Pirates scored 35 runs in 2 games (although 22 of them were against hapless Lumberton)…of course, 13 were against Nederland as the Pirates opened district play with two huge wins. Taylor Robiceaux in particular gets high marks from us for his pitching performance against Nederland. They have two ‘better be careful’ games against Dayton and the surprising Central Jaguars but we are all itching for that next big game…Vidor vs. PNG in a couple of weeks. 5. PNG (NR) Speaking of the Indians, their play-up strategy seems to have been a good idea…ya think? They blast Ozen and their ace (DD Lott) 10-0 then win an extra inning thriller against long-time rival LCM. All Eric Harrington did along the way was win both games on the hill. Jay Stone will get his week off with a bang, though…they host the Nederland Bulldogs who are uncharacteristically 0-2 in district play. Beware the caged dog. 6. JASPER (5) Jasper just keeps doing one thing…winning. Granted, a 6-0 win vs. WOS and 3-1 vs. HF does not evoke memories of the ’27 Yankees but it does keep them at 3-0 in district play. It will be a pretty telling week this week for the Bulldogs as they host the Hawks from HJ before traveling south to tangle with Silsbee in what promises to be a Friday night thriller. 7. LCM (4) The 4-2 extra inning loss to PNG had to sting more than a little for Coach Griff and the Bears and it is doubtful that the 9-6 win vs. Central does much to take that away. LCM spends the week on the road (Ozen and Dayton) where trouble can loom against two teams who need wins desperately. 8. SILSBEE ( A solid week for the Tigers, especially the 8-3 drubbing of the HJ. Maybe the district opening loss to BC has become a distant memory? We’ll find out when the we put a cat and a dog in the pit…Silsbee Tigers hosting Jasper Bulldogs on Friday. Ace Joel Schooling should be getting his talented right arm ready for what promises to be that district’s “Game of the Weekâ€. 9. HUFFMAN (9) The Falcons took it on the chin against district foe New Caney although they did have a 14-4 rout against Galena Park. Anything less than 2-0 this week (they’ve got also-rans Smiley and Forest Brook for opponents) would be a huge disappointment as they sharpen their talons for the upcoming rumble with BH. 10. BUNA (NR) Why the Cougars? Because 2A doesn’t get enough ‘love’ on the Board. And because they are off to a spirited 3-0 to take the top spot in their district. Everything else should go out the window when district play starts and, at 3-0, Buna deserves their props. They get ‘em here with their first ever appearance in our Top Ten. IN, OUT AND HONORABLE MENTIONS: The Nederland Bulldogs have completed their ‘penthouse to outhouse’ run…the were our Week 1 #1 and have now tumbled all the way out of our Top Ten. Hardin Jefferson slipped in last week and then slipped out courtesy of getting drummed by Silsbee. Congratulations to the OF Bobcats. First, they take BC to their last out before losing an absolute heartbreaker and, second, had the heart to bounce back and win an equally thrilling 6-5 match against HF. By the way, when will the ‘Horns ever get a break? A great week is ahead. West Brook @ Baytown Sterling. Jasper hosts HJ (a must win for the Hawks) then travels to Silsbee. And, of course, Nederland tries to right their ship the hardest way imaginable…by traveling to PNG. Rain, rain …stay away!!!! Until next week, ‘Play Ball’.
  13. Predictions for Tuesday?
  14. Go Mississippi State!!!!!!!!!!!!
  15. Rice gets Graham No. 700 Owls top Cal Poly to earn milestone victory for coach A bottle of Dom Perignon rested on the desk of Rice coach Wayne Graham on Saturday afternoon, a special gift commemorating the Owls' 7-2 win over Cal Poly at Reckling Park — Graham's 700th victory in 15-plus seasons on South Main. When asked how he would celebrate, Graham didn't need much time to muster a response. Given the Owls' penchant for late-inning heroics and the scheduled first pitch of the series finale, Graham said, "Rest. We've got to play at noon." After rallying for three runs in the ninth inning to claim Friday's opener 9-8, the eighth-ranked Owls (16-7) snapped a tie at 2 with a three-run seventh Saturday. Rice then finished off Cal Poly (13-12) with two in the eighth, clinching its 34th consecutive home series. Danny Lehmann, in the lineup as the designated hitter for the second time this season, capped the rally with an RBI single in the eighth that brought in Brian Friday, who posted his second four-hit game by going 4-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. The Owls rolled into three double plays through five innings but scored three times in the seventh with two outs. Lehmann's base hit in the eighth also came with two outs. "We definitely had our fair share of two-out RBIs," Lehmann said. "We need to start doing a better job of attacking teams early, getting in front of them, and building off of that. "We've had a lot of nerve-wracking games, kind of like (Friday) night." Righthander Matt Langwell (2-1) minimized the drama by working seven strong innings. Making his first weekend start, Langwell allowed two runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Better still he maintained his poise, even through a troublesome fourth. "The coaches told me to get back out there and keep attacking the zone," Langwell said of the fourth inning. "They let me get a chance (to make a weekend start) and told me to take advantage of it, and I just went out there and tried to compete as best as I could."
  16. www.panews.com Depwe is on target with special invites for Gamble Awards The Port Arthur News Ray Depwe, the Port Arthuran who came up with the idea of a James Gamble Awards Banquet to salute the area's top high school basketball players, as well as Lincoln's legendary coach, has added a terrific touch for this year's 5th annual event. Impressed at the strong Southeast Texas showing in the state high school basketball tournament, Depwe invited 2A state champion Kountze, 3A champ Hardin-Jefferson and 4A runnerup Ozen to be special guests at the Saturday, April 14 gala at the Parker Center. Tickets, priced at $10 for students and $15 for adults, are available by calling Sharon Adams (984-9600) . . . Finalists for the Gamble Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside trophies, by the way, will be selected this week. The players chosen will make up the roster for the 4th Annual Port Arthur News/Gamble Award basketball game set for Thursday, April 12 in the Parker Center. A trio of Gamble Award nominees from last season — HJ's 6-1 point guard Ryan Donahoe, WO-Stark's 6-7 Richard Netherly and Ozen's 6-3 Kris Richard, the winner of the 2006 Mr. Outside — appear to be locks to make the team again. Memorial coach Terrul Henderson, who is 0-3 as the visiting team coach, vows that he'll bring a team of Houston area all-stars with enough talent to beat Gamble's all-stars this time around. Ozen ex Keena Young, a Mr. Outside nominee in 2003, had a terrific senior season for Brigham Young. Keena, who scored 19 points in BYU's overtime loss to Lamar in December, went on to be named Mountain West Player of the Year, averaging 17 points and seven rebounds. He scored 24 in the Cougars 79-77 NCAA first round loss to Xavier . . . Brigham Young, incidentally, was one of five NCAA teams Lamar played in a schedule that first-year coach Steve Roccaforte now admits was a little too ambitious. The Cardinals were 2-3 against NCAA entrants, with victories over BYU and Southland champ Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and losses to No. 2 seed Memphis, No. 3 seed Texas A&M and No. 14 seed Oral Roberts. Roccaforte, by the way, was a guest of his former boss, John Calipari, for Memphis' first-round game against North Texas in New Orleans . . . Wonder if the NCAA selection committee is proud of the two chumps it gave the final tourney at-large bids to, thus keeping a couple of deserving mid majors out. Stanford, an 18-12 team, played like it while losing to Louisville by 20. Arkansas, which at 7-9 was tied for the eighth best record in the SEC, took a 17-point beating from USC. Neither team should have been anywhere near the NCAA and proved it with their sorry play. Former Texas A&M star Antoine Wright, who now plays for the New Jersey Nets, probably shouldn't expect to be invited back to Aggieland any time soon. Wright, on HBO's Costas Now show that aired Tuesday night, told host Bob Costas that athletes at A&M are steered into agricultural school for grades that will keep them eligible. "In certain classes, you see a quarterback, me, a running back and then a farmer. But we're all in poultry science for a reason. We're in this class because we need to get this grade. We're not really trying to learn about chickens," Wright said. Reckon Longhorn exes will have any fun with that ? ? ? Attendance at last week's Southland Conference tournament should certainly help Lamar athletic director Billy Tubbs' push to get the tourney put up for bid among conference schools. Total attendance for the seven SLC games played in the Campbell Center was 4,372, or about 500 more than LU's per game average. Crowd for the championship game between A&M-Corpus and Northwestern State was 1,811. No way does going back there back financial sense . . . Best suggestion on trying to do the right thing in the NCAA tournament came from one of my listeners on Sportsrap. Since adding teams seems inevitable, what with Syracuse's Jim Boeheim and Big 12 coaches whining, add three more play-in games. But instead of using them to eliminate mid major conferences with an automatic bid, pair-up teams competing for the final four at large-bids. In other words, the four teams that would be No. 12 seeds, and the next four on the bubble, would play each other for the No. 12 seed in each region. Even that's not fail safe for mid majors, but it would be a step toward fairness. Which is exactly why it won't happen. Chris Stroud remains hopeful of getting into the Shell Houston Open, either on a sponsor's exemption or with his priority number in the pecking order coming up, but it remains a long shot. Most of the sponsor exemptions have been filled with players like Michael Campbell, Bernhard Langher, Lee Westwood, Chris Riley, John Cook and John Daly. Stroud, as of Friday, was the first alternate on the regular player list, but with the entry deadline not until next Friday he's probably going to drop down a couple of notches, depending on how many players commit late. His best shot is probably the Monday qualifier. Stroud will be playing in the Nationwide Tour event this week in Lafayette, La. . . . For those interested in attending the Houston Open, I'll be giving away tickets the next two Mondays on Sportsrap. Thanks to former PA News sports staffer Burt Darden, plenty of tickets are available for all four days of the March 29-April 1 event at Redstone Golf Club. My guest for Monday night, unless he's on a plane flying somewhere to do a game for ESPN, will be Ron Franklin . . . Speaking of tickets, if you want an opportunity to be part of March Madness in 2008, the NCAA South Regional is set for Friday, March 28th and Sunday, March 30th at Houston's Reliant Stadium. That's the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 round. The tickets, priced at $165 each for three games, go on sale Monday at 10 a.m. You can get them by calling Ticketmaster at 713 629-3700 or by going on-line at www.ticketmaster.com. Believe me when I say the tickets will be gone in a hurry. The Astros biggest headache in spring training, and it’s a good one, is what to do with rookie sensation Hunter Pence. The former Texas-Arlington standout, who batted .283 with 48 homers and 95 RBI last year at AA Corpus Christi, is hitting a sizzling .625 in spring training and drawing across-the-board raves. Chris Burke has been calling him Babe Ruth. Nolan Ryan has labeled him “a real special player.†Houston, however, intends to have him start the season at AAA Round Rock so he can play every day, rather than platooning with Jason Lane, Luke Scott and Richard Hidalgo. Sooner or later, though, it seems a pretty good bet he’ll be a star at Minute Maid Park . . . Among the most interesting stats for NCAA tournament teams is three-point shooting percentages. Four of the Texas teams, headed by No. 1 Texas A&M (.522), ranked in the top dozen. Texas Tech was No. 2 at .416, Texas was No. 6 at .404 and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was No. 12 at .395. Only North Texas, 32nd at .370, didn’t measure up from long distance . . . Great win for the Aggies over Louisville in a hostile atmosphere Saturday. With the South Regional Sweet 16 next weekend in San Antonio, Billy Gillispie’s club should have an excellent chance to reach the Final Four. Especially after a mid major, Xavier, exposed No. 1 seed Ohio State as overrated Saturday afternoon. Pure luck is the main reason the Buckeyes survived. As for Texas, be very wary of Tim Floyd coached USC today. For my money, Floyd is the best coach in college basketball. His team is a year away from being great, but the Longhorns better come with their A game.
  17. Richard, Donahoe, Netherly head area all-state choices By Dave Rogers The Port Arthur News Ozen’s Kris Richard, Hardin-Jefferson’s Ryan Donahoe and Richard Netherly of West Orange-Stark all earned all-state honors by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, the group announced earlier this week. Richard won the James Gamble Mr. Outside Award last year as the top perimeter player in Southeast Texas while Donahoe and Netherly were finalists for the honors. Others with area ties earning all-state plaudits from TABC include Mike Singletary from District 21-5A champion Kingwood and, in 2A, two players each from Kountze – Cameron Powell and Clayton Busby – and East Chambers – Tramain Thomas and Preston Guillory. Brandon Letsinger was all-state from Class A West Hardin. Girls all-staters from Southeast Texas were few: Lumberton’s Courtney Wilson in 4A, and in 3A, Brittney Scott of WO-S, Kristy Sanders of Orangefield, Ang Green of Silsbee, and Denetra Kellum of Kirbyville. Memorial’s J’Covan Brown was picked to the TABC All-Region III team, an honor shared with the area’s eight all-state players and five others. A total of 13 area players earned all-region honors, including Hamshire-Fannett’s Memri Carmon. Singletary, a 6-5 Texas Tech signee, was named MVP of the All-District 21-5A team, which included Brown and teammate Jacovin Buckner as first-teamers, along with Roman Antoine of West Brook. Memorial’s Charles Wise was a second-team pick. Donahoe was the MVP of the All-District 21-3A team for the second year in a row, just like Netherly was the offensive MVP for the second straight time. Trahan and Busby shared MVP honors in District 24-2A. The All-District 22-4A team has not yet been selected. Humble’s Kayla Williams was the 21-5A girls’ MVP, with Memorial’s Britany Kinlaw and Treasure Eddie and the West Brook duo of Whitney Williams and India Thomas first-team picks. Lady Titans Amber Kinlaw and Elexsia Roberts were second-team picks. For the second year in a row, Wilson was MVP and Pickering offensive player of the year on the All-District 22-4A team. Scott was named MVP in 21-3A.
