  4. 9 Diboll Football players arrested Monday, March 12, 2007 Nine Diboll High School senior football players were arrested Monday morning and charged with burglarizing a campus building, a felony offense, after allegedly participating in a senior prank March 6. "It was wrong, and it crossed the line, so we have to pursue it as such," said officer Jake Denman, chief of police for the Diboll Independent School District. The following were arrested and charged with burglary of a building: Draylen Fussell, 18; Jarrod Christmas, 18; Carlos Nunez, 18; Ben Charles Beaty, 17; Sean Havard, 18; Michael Mitchell, 17; Jayce Murry, 18; Courtney Tillman, 17; and Winston Ives, 18. One other student's arrest is also pending, authorities said. All would likely be placed on school suspension, according to Diboll ISD Athletic Director Gary Martel. The 10 seniors allegedly arrived on campus late at night on March 6 and broke into a campus building. Denman would not share details of the prank, stressing he did not want to encourage copy-cat incidents. "This is not a simple prank," he said. Custodial staff and administrators discovered the prank early on the morning of March 7 and called in extra staff to help clean up the campus before the start of the school day. The cleanup postponed school by about 10 minutes, Denman said. "The school did a good job cleaning up and keeping the students from seeing it," he said. Senior pranks are a tradition at most American high schools. They are usually organized by a group of 12th-grade students who often wrap their school campus in toilet paper or string underwear up a campus flagpole. Martel confirmed the students arrested were senior athletes, most of them honor students. "It was a senior prank that got out of hand," Martel said. "If they had stayed outside the building and just wrapped the lumberjack statue or ran underwear up the flagpole ... that's where the prank should have stopped. But once they went inside the building, it was considered breaking and entering, and it escalated from there." He said most of the students had already called him and apologized. "They owned up to it. It was something that was meant to be funny when it started out, and it turned out to be not funny at all." Calls to administrators at Diboll Independent School District for comment were unsuccessful. The administration office is closed for spring break. City Editor Gary Willmon contributed to this report.

  14. League openers big for PN-G, Dogs The Port Arthur News A couple of baseball teams with .500 pre-district records, Port Neches-Groves and Nederland should have their hands full in tonight's District 22-4A baseball openers. PN-G's Indians, 7-7, host Beaumont Ozen tonight at 7 p.m., while Nederland, 5-5, travels to play Vidor. Coach Kyle Green's fourth Vidor team is off to an 11-2 start highlighted by a 4-0 performance at last weekend's Jasper tournament. The Pirates handed Jasper its first loss of the season after 10 wins and they did it with three players out injured. Nederland went 1-3 in round robin action at last week's Deer Park tournament, with a win over Sharpstown the biggest positive to go with losses to Cy-Falls, La Porte and Clear Creek. PN-G went 2-2-1 at the Lufkin tournament, scoring wins over Lufkin and Lufkin Hudson while losing to Spring Branch Memorial and Houston Westside, with a tie with Tyler Lee. Ozen brings a 7-6 record to PN-G. The Panthers, too, have had an up-and-down start against a tough schedule. They opened the regular season with a 7-3 win over District 21-5A favorite West Brook and went 2-1 last week in the Bridge City tournament, losing only to the host Cardinals. District 21-5A begins tonight as well and Port Arthur Memorial also faces a tough team in Channelview, opening league play on the road. The Falcons went to state last year in Class 4A, but are rebuilding with only one starter back. According to the Houston Chronicle, Channelview is 0-4 against 5A competition this year. The Titans, 6-5, have not played a 5A opponent this year, but are 3-2 against 4A competition. West Brook plays at Atascocita, Kingwood hosts Baytown Lee and Humble is at Baytown Sterling in other 21-5A games. In 21-3A, Bridge City is at Orangefield, Hamshire-Fannett at Jasper and West Orange-Stark at Silsbee. East Chambers hosts Anahuac in 24-2A play.
  15. Port Neches-Groves girls 1, Vidor 0 PORT NECHES -- The good news and the bad news for Aimee Bates came in almost equal doses on Monday but at least the Port Neches-Groves girls soccer coach found a win at the end of the evening. Bates watched her Lady Indians as they delivered an obviously dominant performance against Vidor at Indian Stadium, yet PN-G only prevailed 1-0 in an important District 20-4A matchup. The win secured a 4A playoff berth for the sixth-year head coach and her team which improved to 16-2 and 13-1.
  16. Lady Bulldogs clinch 20-4A district crown The Port Arthur News NEDERLAND -- After thinking about it, the idea seemed a fairly pleasant one late Monday night for Nederland girls soccer coach Julie Johnson. The idea finally sinked in Johnson's mind that her 2007 Lady Bulldogs had clinched at least a share of their 14th district championship in Julie's 16 head-coaching seasons. "That sounds pretty good, now that I think of it," Johnson said. The Lady Bulldogs improved to 19-1 and 15-0 with one remaining regular-season game as they claimed both ends of a day-night doubleheader on Monday. Nederland defeated Vidor 8-0 in Bulldog Stadium early Monday afternoon. Later in the same afternoon, the Lady Dogs visited Sour Lake and returned home Monday night with a 9-1 win at Hardin-Jefferson. That's a long day of soccer for Johnson's girls, yet a very rewarding one. After all, the Nederlanders have a full week before they have another game. They host Port Neches-Groves in Bulldog Stadium next Tuesday night on Senior Night at 5:30 p.m. "I felt we had a pretty well-controlled game against Vidor," Johnson said. "It was a long day, sitting around and waiting for lightning to stop. Then we played a little air ball in the Hardin-Jefferson game. We won some balls out of the air. I would prefer us playing on the ground." The suffocating Lady Bulldogs' defense limited the workload for goalkeeper Heather Hussey who sustained only one shot on her goal in each game. Meanwhile, Nederland stormed to a 5-0 halftime lead against Vidor (outshooting the Lady Pirates 19-1) and a 4-0 halftime advantage at H-J (leading in shots 25-1). Johnna Wagner, Megan Melancon, and Taylor Carlson scored two goals apiece while Lauren Matt and Stephanie Karam added one each in the Vidor game. Johnson credited assists against Vidor to Wagner, Carlson, Taylor Havard and freshman Jacie Bell. The start of the Vidor outing was delayed by rain. Lauren Matt, Logan Matt and Taylor Havard had two goals apiece at H-J while Heather Crawford, Ashley Bombek and Taren Dupuis added one each. Carlson led the assists column in Sour Lake with two followed by Havard and Karam with one apiece.
