  2. USC coach to talk to Mayo about marijuana charge Southern California coach Tim Floyd reserved comment Saturday in the wake of star recruit O.J. Mayo being cited for misdemeanor marijuana possession late Friday in Huntington, W.Va. According to reports, Mayo was one of four men cited for possession after the car they were riding in was pulled over, according to Cabell County Sheriff's Deputy Doug Adams. "I'm not going to have any response on it until I know more about it," Floyd told reporters after USC lost to Oregon 81-57 in the championship game of the Pac-10 tournament Saturday night in Los Angeles. "I'm going to talk to O.J. before I talk to you guys." Mayo, who starred for Huntington High School, is considered by many to be the nation's top high school basketball player. It is the second incident involving the Trojans' signee, who was suspended three games as punishment for being ejected and making contact with a referee in a Jan. 26 game. Mayo transferred this season from Cincinnati's North College Hill to Huntington and signed a letter of intent in November to play next season at USC.

  4. Nextel Cup points as of Vegas. (unofficially) Here are Nacar.com's unofficial points standing as of Vegas. Gordon is now 2nd and Martin is barely clinging on the the points lead. Can you imagine finishing in the top 10 in the first 3 races with 2 2nd place finishes and still being 2nd in points?! Martin may REALLY want to re-consider not running a full season! Poor ol' Mikey Waltrip. 50 cars listed in the points and he is still DL. Maybe he is reaping what he sowed? 9. Astros' Williams says elbow is improving Moehler looks good as team beats Devil Rays in St. Petersburg Timeline: Review Astros in '06 KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Astros righthander Woody Williams, who is making progress with the elbow tenderness he has had this spring, threw four scoreless innings against Astros minor leaguers Sunday at Osceola County Stadium. "I felt better, getting there," Williams said. "It's not obviously right where I want to be yet. I still have a few more outings. Every time is better and better." He and catcher Brad Ausmus benefited from working together. "The big thing for Woody and I was to get acquainted with each other in a game situation, get our signals straight," Ausmus said. "I need to get an understanding how he likes to pitch, how he likes to attack hitters. So we accomplished that." Williams struck out four and walked one while giving up only one hit. He also had an RBI single. He would like to work on throwing his cutters to righthanded hitters. "I'm still not reaching out and finishing it like I need to," he said of his cutter to righthanders. "I'm just kind of leaving it in the middle of the plate instead of in the corner. I think I'm getting real close with arm strength. I haven't seen any numbers. As far as (that) the hitters will let you know." In Sunday's spring training game, righthander Brian Moehler threw four scoreless innings against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Sunday in St. Petersburg, Fla. Moehler gave up one hit and a walk and struck out three in the 5-3 victory. Mike Lamb was 2-for-2 with three RBIs. Charlton Jimerson was 2-for-2 with two doubles. Mike Rodriguez was 2-for-4. Hunter Pence went 0-for-2. Paul Estrada gave up three unearned runs. Trever Miller (one inning), Ezequiel Astacio (two innings) and Jimmy Barthmaier (one inning) pitched scoreless innings. Astacio has thrown four scoreless innings this spring.
  10. Yao goes wild!!!!!!! The plan to run the offense just as the Rockets had for 32 games without Yao Ming, assuming that the "ball will find him" often enough, sounded good last week. When Yao was just coming back from his fractured leg, they were not going ask Yao to carry them, not right away. By Sunday, with three games to work out the kinks, it was time. Against the formidable Dwight Howard, Yao scored 37 points and blocked four shots while driving the Rockets to a 103-92 win against the Orlando Magic before 18,135 at Toyota Center. Yao made 14 of 22 shots against Howard, the top pick of the 2004 draft, and Darko Milicic, the second pick of the 2003 draft. Howard had 16 points and 12 rebounds, but did not play in the fourth quarter when the Magic made their run. Tracy McGrady made just six of 17 shots for his 19 points and added 10 assists as the Rockets made 36 of 68 shots, moving to 16-1 when scoring 100 points or more at Toyota Center this season. The Rockets had scored reliably through the night, and 3½ minutes into the fourth quarter, they had their largest lead at 21 points (89-68). They had made 32 of 58 shots (55.2 percent), and Yao had put in consecutive jumpers to give him 30 points in 30 minutes. Then the Rockets went cold. Jake Tsakalidis sank an 18-footer, offering no clue that the Rockets could struggle on Sunday. But in the next three minutes, they missed three shots and had consecutive moving-screen turnovers, as the Magic scored the next nine points to close to within 11. The Rockets did not quite recapture the offensive roll with which they had built the 21-point lead, but McGrady sank a 3-pointer to stop the run. Yao added a pair of free throws. And the Magic missed their next four shots, falling far short of putting any real tension back into the game. When the Rockets did fall into position to get themselves in trouble in the first half (with Yao getting his second foul in the first quarter and McGrady going out with two early in the second) they just passed their way to the sorts of shots they knocked down shots as they rarely have in a half this season. With Yao making 7-of-8 and McGrady 4-of-7, the Rockets hit on 22 of 32 shots (68.8 percent.) They moved the ball so well, they had 17 assists in the first half. But the most valuable stretch in building a 16-point lead and a 58-45 lead at halftime, might have been when McGrady was out and the Rockets had four turnovers in the first three minutes of the second quarter, with the Magic pulled to within four. The Rockets then made five of their next six shots, with Kirk Snyder going from the inactive list on Friday to meaningful minutes on Sunday. He sank a 3-pointer to give the Rockets their first double-digit lead, 45-34, five minutes before halftime. For most of the night, that was the Rockets' answer to almost everything. From the occasional flurry or turnovers that threatened to kick-start a Magic rally, the Rockets answered with a burst of scoring, usually by putting the ball in Yao's hands and letting him to go work.

  14. CLASS 3A CHAMPIONSHIP Donahoe too much for Wylie Guard fuels Hardin-Jefferson's comeback victory AUSTIN - During the postseason, Hardin-Jefferson refused to go away quietly. Even when the Hawks faced double-digit deficits and it seemed the breaks were going against them, they believed. Saturday was no different, and their perseverance was rewarded with a state title. Led by a stellar performance from senior guard Ryan Donahoe, the Hawks recovered from a 13-point deficit to defeat Abilene Wylie 56-44 in the Class 3A state championship before 11,415 at the Erwin Center. It was the fourth time the Hawks (38-4) overcame a double-digit deficit in the playoffs. It's the school's third title and first since 1991. "We're immune to this," Donahoe said of facing large deficits. "It's truly about who wants it the most, and I think the second half showed that we wanted it the most." Donahoe, the game's most valuable player, finished with 27 points on 10-of-22 shooting and five rebounds. He scored 18 points in the second half and helped lead a 34-9 charge spanning the second, third and fourth quarters to put Hardin-Jefferson in control. It was all Wylie in the first 10 minutes. The Bulldogs (33-4) took a 10-0 lead after a putback by senior center Cory Davis with 4:42 remaining in the first quarter. After a layup by Wylie senior forward Matt Smith with 5:51 to go in the second quarter, the Bulldogs (33-4) led 26-13. The Hawks closed the gap to five with a 10-2 run to end the first half. The Hawks didn't obtain their first lead until 3:42 of the third quarter, when Donahoe scored on a layup while being fouled on his way to the basket. The play was part of an 18-3 run the Hawks used over a span of 8:34 between the third and fourth quarters.

  16. Kountze nets third crown in 4 seasons AUSTIN - The Kountze Lions used a 17-4 run in the final 4:33 to defeat Shallowater 71-57 in the Class 2A state basketball title game Saturday at the Erwin Center. The Lions (32-6) claimed their third state title in four seasons and fourth in school history. The Lions won the 2A title in 2005 and 1970 and the 3A crown in 2004. Senior guard Cameron Powell scored 24 points on 10-of-18 shooting. He scored 16 of his points in the second half. Senior center Clayton Busby contributed 19 points and 10 rebounds, and freshman post Devin Bray added 12 points and six rebounds. Wes Dipprey led Shallowater (30-4) with 21 points. • Nazareth 52, Laneville 43 — Dustin Schulte scored 16 points, including 10 in a row in a key stretch of the second half, to send defending Class A Division II champion Nazareth to its fifth state championship. Nazareth (19-6) matched the school's girls state title from a week earlier. • Thorndale 39, Martin's Mill 37 — Austin Falke's steal at midcourt and layup with 14 seconds left sealed the Class A Division I title for Thorndale (28-2). With Thorndale up 37-35, Falke stuck out his left hand to tip away Travis Womble's pass for Cody Mewbourn and outran two defenders to roll in the layup.
  17. Released by MIF04 SETXSPORTS.COM BASEBALL TOP TEN WEEK THREE The last week of tournament play provided our teams with an opportunity to do their last-minute fine tuning before the ‘real season’ begins. Last week saw Bridge City win a huge district game…edging Silsbee 2-1 at Silsbee. That win was enough to move the Cardinals into our #1 spot. 1. BRIDGE CITY (2) Jeff Stringer outdueled Joel Schooling and gave the Cards a huge advantage in the early district race when BC defeated the Tigers 2-1. The “Big Red†then swept their own tournament (defeating all 4A teams) and, with Johnny Dishon seemingly hitting a homer every other at-bat, the Cards move into our top slot and keeps OUR streak alive…a new #1 each week. 2. WEST BROOK (3) The Bruins continue to show why they were our preseason #1, blistering Vidor 11-1 then rolling undefeated into the finals in Lake Charles before losing an extra-inning affair to host (and nationally ranked) Barbe (by the way, can anyone say ‘hometowned’). WB’s pitching showed significant improvement and, with that offense, the Brook is rarin’ to get with it in district play. 3. BARBERS HILL (1) The Hill lost at home (2-1 to unranked PNG) but did rebound to win their own tournament including a come-from-behind win against 3A Hardin-Jefferson. District play begins this week for the Eagles with ‘should be wins’ against Forest Brook and Crosby. 4. LCM (4) Another good week for the Bears, losing only an extra inning match to Jasper. It gets serious for Griff and the boys as they open district play this week. LCM opens at Central then one of the ‘all time’ great games takes place…LCM vs. PNG at LCM. 5. JASPER (5) A good week for the Bulldogs as they open district with a very solid win vs. OF and another win in their own tournament against LCM. They did lost 8-4 to Vidor…in extra innings. If their pitchers stay healthy (and don’t run out of steam), this is still a very good team. This week? HF and WOS. 6. VIDOR (7) What to make of the Pirates? They get shellacked 11-1 at their place by West Brook then turn around and go undefeated in the Jasper tourney. The jump straight into the fire with a district opening game at home…against Nederland. Put up or shut up in this one. 7. NEDERLAND (6) The Bulldogs go 1-3 in 5A Deer Park Tournament. Will their strategy of playing ‘up’ against larger schools pay off in district? We’ll find out pretty soon as they travel to Vidor on Tuesday night. More disconcerting for Coach Robbins is the fact the team’s ace has been driller in his last two outings and his CF is banged up. District play won’t wait for one to heal…the ‘Dogs need to be ready now. 8. SILSBEE (9) Tough Tuesday night for the Tigers as they dropped a heart-breaking 2-1 district opener to BC. True to form, the Tigers bounced back by going 4-0 and winning the Llano tournament. They can breath easy this Tuesday (WOS) but another rumble awaits on Friday when they travel to Sour Lake to take on the HJ Hawks. 9. HUFFMAN ( Hard to get a read on the Falcons (especially when no one really reports their scores !!!!). They did defeat West Colombia on Tuesday before going to the Spring tourney (although they did take a 11-0 spanking to 5A Katy). Who knows? 10. HARDIN JEFFERSON (10) The Hawks opened district with Aaron Treece’s no hit win over HF then rolled into the finals against BH before losing a late lead and losing 13-5. HJ will be looking for area wide respect on Friday when they host Silsbee… a ‘must’ game for both squads. NEARLY IN, NEARLY OUT, AND OTHER JABBER: Like Nederland, PNG is using the ‘play up’ preseason strategy. They could be very ready for district play. They better be with games this week vs. Ozen and LCM. The same is true for the Panthers of Ozen as they travel to PNG and then host Dayton. And don’t forget about the Broncos, folks…they could be there when the smoke settles in this district. It is a big week for West Brook as they open district on Tuesday then host perennial 5A power Kingwood on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. (that’s right…I’ll won’t be at work that day). Last week was fun…it gets serious this week for everybody. Go to the park. Buy a hot dog. Enjoy some of the best baseball anywhere…right here in SE Texas.
  18. Games like that really make me mad!!! UT is very good no doubt. Had 20 something lead over KU. They'll be fine.
