  6. Sources: Chatman quit amid sexual misconduct claims BATON ROUGE, La. -- Pokey Chatman resigned as the head women's basketball coach at Louisiana State University on Wednesday after the university became aware of an alleged inappropriate sexual relationship between Chatman and a former player on Chatman's team, sources told ESPN.com. The university, the sources said, learned of the relationship from an employee within the basketball program. ESPN.com's attempts to reach the employee by telephone and e-mail on Thursday night were unsuccessful. Chatman, who initially revealed plans to quit after the postseason, says she will not coach the Lady Tigers in the NCAA Tournament. In a statement released Thursday afternoon, Chatman said: "My resignation yesterday has prompted speculation and rumors that far exceeded my expectations and it is clear that my presence would be a great distraction during the NCAA Tournament." Assistant coach Bob Starkey, who will take over the team for now, declined to say whether he was aware of any improper conduct. "There's been 20 to 25 things that are just floating out there, and I think she thought if she just stepped away from it she could eliminate that from even multiplying," Starkey said. "She has her reasons, and hopefully, soon she'll address that herself.'' LSU athletic director Skip Bertman told the Times Picayune of New Orleans, which first reported Chatman's alleged misconduct with one or more players Thursday on its Web site, that no formal inquiry into Chatman's conduct had been opened by the university. He did acknowledge, though, that an informal investigation "might have happened." "The girl did what she did and LSU had no control over that," Bertman said, referring to Chatman. Starkey said Chatman did venture onto the LSU campus Thursday to tell the team she would not coach them during the NCAA Tournament. "Certainly the kids were disappointed to get the news. Pokey recruited all of those kids either as head coach or as an assistant," Starkey said. "These are not just good basketball players, they're good kids, and I think they're very close, and I think that will help us to try and move forward with it." Players have been off-limits to the media since the announcement. Starkey said he and players were caught off-guard when Chatman told the team Wednesday that she wanted to pursue other career opportunities after this season. "She came in and said for personal reasons some opportunities had come available to her -- that it was something she needed to move on,'' Starkey said. The No. 10 Lady Tigers (26-7) upset then-No. 2 Tennessee last week in the Southeastern Conference tournament before falling to Vanderbilt in Sunday's tournament final. Chatman is 90-14 as LSU's head coach. Before that, she was 15-5 as acting head coach during the latter stages of the 2003-04 season, when longtime coach Sue Gunter left the team because of lung disease. That included a trip to the Final Four in New Orleans, where the Lady Tigers fell in the semifinals to Tennessee. Chatman, a Louisiana native, has been at LSU as both a player and coach for nearly 18 years. Playing guard, she was one of LSU's career assist and steals leaders. After her playing career ended in 1991, she spent one season as a student assistant coach and then 12 seasons as associate coach under Gunter. LSU won SEC regular-season titles in her first two seasons as a head coach and made it to the Final Four both years. In 2005, Chatman received a four-year contract extension that pays her close to $400,000 a year plus postseason bonuses ranging from $15,000 for making the NCAA Tournament to $70,000 for winning a national title. The highest-paid coaches in women's college basketball, Pat Summitt of Tennessee and Geno Auriemma of Connecticut, both earn more than $1 million per year. Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.

  9. LC-M's Sonnier and Greer headed to state Van Wade The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — Going that extra mile has paid off for Little Cypress-Mauriceville senior powerlifters Chris Sonnier and Kevin Greer. Both Bear athletes have dominated their respective weight classes all season long and with that type of effort, they qualified for the Class 4A State Powerlifting Meet for the second straight year, which will be held at the Aldine High School Athletic Complex March 24. Sonnier has been a “monster†in ruling the 114-pound weight division throughout the year while Greer has been a “machine†in the 132-pound class. “Each one of them are such special kids,†said LC-M powerlifting coach Brian Waguespack. “Powerlifting is a sport that you have to be motivated to do and both of them certainly have that.†Sonnier ruled the roost at the 4A Region III Meet last week, totaling 1,040 pounds. Sonnier set new regional standards in the squat (415 pounds), dead-lift (440 pounds) and total weight. “It’s been a great season so far,†Sonnier said. “It’s been fun winning at all the meets. I’ve been really trying to improve hard this year after finishing second at state last year. It motivates me all the time.†The young man that nipped Sonnier last year, Donna’s Robbie Nieto, is back in the mix this year. “He (Nieto) is a tremendous lifter and I’m really pushing myself to get past him this year,†Sonnier said. “Medaling at state is nice, but I sure want to win the gold one this time.†“It all comes pretty natural to Chris,†Waguespack said. “He has so much power in that little body and he continues to amaze me week after week.†Greer has pushed himself to the limit in the 132-pound division, especially at regionals last week. He was sitting in fourth-place after the bench press and the squat with just the top two individuals qualifying for state. He then hit his favorite venue, the dead-lift, and hauled up a personal-best 460 pounds to vault himself all the way up to first place. “I knew I had to have a big lift and I was able to pull it off,†Greer said. “The dead-lift is my best one and the squat is a close second. It’s just a terrific feeling to head back to state. I really want to bring home a medal.†Greer ranks in the top four heading to state with only 20 pounds separating the quartet. “Kevin really dug down deep at regionals,†Waguespack said. “Kevin always has that little extra because of his work ethic. I’m thrilled to be coaching those two guys.†Sonnier’s bests this year includes 215 pounds on the bench, 415 pounds on the squat and a 440-pound dead-lift. Greer’s bests include 460 pounds with the dead-lift, 385 pounds on the squat and 235 pounds on the bench. So what motivates the two young men, both with very little body fat if any at all, to constantly hit the weight room in a sport that can be demanding. “It sure isn’t easy, but I’ve been doing it for four years and it’s been a whole lot of fun,†Sonnier said. “I got involved in gymnastics when I was about 6 and I’ve always been pretty strong since then and it does come natural to me a little bit. I tried other sports, like baseball, and I struggled with a little. And, of course, I’m too small for football. Powerlifting is the sport for me.†“It’s a demanding sport,†Greer said. “But nothing beats the feeling of when you’re able to put a medal around your neck. Chris and I have picked up quite a few but we have our sights set on two more and hopefully they’re gold.â€
