Man sues Pacers' mascot for unexpected tackle INDIANAPOLIS -- A man is suing the Indiana Pacers and the performer who portrays its feline mascot, alleging the 6-foot-tall performer permanently injured him when he was tackled during a free-throw shooting contest. Nathaniel Jackson, who lives in northern Indiana's Adams County, alleges in his lawsuit that as he entered Conseco Fieldhouse for a March 11, 2005 game against Golden State he was asked to take part in a free-throw shooting contest during a timeout. Jackson, who is in his mid-20s, initially declined, saying he was recovering from back surgery but was assured that "there would be no reason for concern or injury," according to the lawsuit, which was filed March 2 in Marion Superior Court. After taking part in the free-throw contest, the lawsuit states that Jackson began to leave the basketball court but was tackled from behind by the team's mascot, "Boomer," a 6-foot-tall blue cat with gold whiskers. The employee who knew about Jackson's back surgery immediately told the mascot about the surgery, and Boomer responded by kicking at Jackson's legs, the lawsuit alleges. The complaint names the Pacers organization, Conseco Fieldhouse and the unidentified performer who portrays Boomer, and accuses them of negligence. Jackson's lawsuit seeks compensation for his medical bills, lost income, pain, suffering and "permanent injuries," which are not detailed in the complaint. In a statement released Thursday, the Pacers declined to comment, saying team officials had not reviewed the lawsuit. "We have just received word about the filing of this lawsuit. Until we can review the details and speak with all parties concerned, we will withhold comment," the statement said. Jackson's lawyers declined to comment on his behalf, saying they would prefer to allow the lawsuit stand for itself. "Since that was just filed and we're in the midst of litigation and we have been unable to get the case resolved prior to filing suit, I feel the best avenue at this point in time is to let the litigation process continue," said Stanley Rosenblatt, a Fort Wayne lawyer representing Jackson. Chatman won't coach LSU in NCAA Tournament BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU women's basketball coach Pokey Chatman said Thursday she will not coach the Lady Tigers in the NCAA Tournament, a day after announcing her plans to resign after the postseason. "My resignation yesterday has prompted speculation and rumors that far exceeded my expectations and it is clear that my presence would be a great distraction during the NCAA Tournament," Chatman said in a statement released Thursday afternoon. In the same news release, LSU athletic director Skip Bertman said assistant coach Bob Starkey will act as the head coach during the NCAA Tournament. "I respect and appreciate Pokey's decision to step away from the program now in the best interests of the team," Bertman said. Chatman, 35, unexpectedly announced her resignation Wednesday, saying she wanted to pursue other, unspecified career opportunities. Chatman is 90-14 as LSU's head coach. Before that, she was 15-5 as acting head coach during the latter stages of the 2003-04 season, when longtime coach Sue Gunter left the team because of lung disease. That included a trip to the Final Four in New Orleans, where the Lady Tigers fell in the semifinals to Tennessee. Chatman, a Louisiana native, has been at LSU as both a player and coach for nearly 18 years. Playing guard, she was one of LSU's career assist and steals leaders. After her playing career ended in 1991, she spent one season as a student assistant coach and then 12 seasons as associate coach under Gunter. LSU won SEC regular-season titles in her first two seasons as a head coach and made it to the Final Four both years. In 2005, Chatman received a four-year contract extension that pays her close to $400,000 a year plus postseason bonuses ranging from $15,000 for making the NCAA Tournament to $70,000 for winning a national title. The highest-paid coaches in women's college basketball, Pat Summitt of Tennessee and Geno Auriemma of Connecticut, both earn more than $1 million per year. Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press
