Gillispie wants Big 12 to lobby more for Tournament entries Aggies coach says league falls short in marketing its postseason candidates COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M coach Billy Gillispie has voiced concerns that the Big 12 was not doing enough to secure conference teams more bids to the NCAA tournament. "I'm really disappointed in the way that people are perceiving our league, and I think our league doesn't do as good a job as our competitors do as far as marketing our league because we're talking about a team in our league that needs to win a game in the conference tournament and they've already got 10 wins? Give me a break," Gillispie told reporters Monday. Kansas State (21-10, 10-6), which finished fourth in the regular season, is still being mentioned as a bubble team for the NCAAs. Gillispie said that's frustrating, particularly when he hears that other conferences are looking at getting seven or more bids. "Nobody plays better basketball than us one through 12. We just haven't done a good enough job, in my opinion, as a league," Gillispie said. "I think the members are taking care of the league better than the league is taking care of its members in this particular situation." Other leagues do it better Gillispie said he didn't know "what the answer is but I know that some other leagues have it figured out." "I'm not one of those administrators or whatever, but I know the coaches and the players and the teams do a lot for the league," Gillispie said. "I think that they have to figure out a way, maybe study other leagues and talk to other leagues and be more proactive instead of reactive because our teams are too good and our players are too good and our coaches have done a great job. ... Why are we settling for a certain number of teams in the tournament when everybody else is getting more?" "I don't know what more the teams and the coaches and the players can do," he added. "We need to have more help." Weiberg says exec works on TV Commissioner Kevin Weiberg pointed out that the Big 12 has an associate commissioner dedicated to basketball and has worked to secure more national television appearances for the conference — including 35 on ESPN networks and eight on national broadcast networks. He also commended the conference's media relations staff for providing "as much information, as good quality information, as anyone." "On the side of just talking about the tournament, we avail ourselves of every opportunity to talk to our appointed NCAA men's basketball committee contacts, and I know from speaking directly to them that they believe the quality of information we've provided to them is very good," Weiberg said. "I think that the effort that we put into it is a pretty good one. "I know that coaches get frustrated when they see stories being written from time to time about teams with winning conference records potentially being so-called bubble teams, and I understand that frustration and share it. But I do think that you have to, at some point, have to feel like the process is going to take care of some of that and you have to understand that we're all working really hard to do the best we can for the conference." The Big 12 got six bids each year from 2000 to 2003 before dropping to four in 2004. Six Big 12 teams got in again in 2005 and four made the tournament last year. "I think our conference is clearly among the top five or six conferences in the country," Weiberg said. "From my perspective, if you have a winning or even a .500 conference record in the Big 12 you should be receiving very serious consideration to being in the at-large field."

Artest arrested at home on domestic violence charges Last month Ron Artest was cited for neglecting dogs on his property, and now his troubles have escalated. Authorities arrested the Sacramento Kings forward on Monday after a woman called 911 from his home saying she had been assaulted, Placer County sheriff's officials said. Deputies responded to Artest's five-acre estate in the Sacramento suburb of Loomis about 9:30 a.m., where they found a woman who had suffered injuries, officials said. She declined medical attention. Deputies arrested Artest on suspicion of domestic violence and using force or violence to prevent his victim from reporting a crime, sheriff's spokeswoman Dena Erwin said. "He and the female were in the house and separated," Erwin said. "The deputies interviewed them and took Mr. Artest into custody." Artest was booked into the Placer County Jail and released later on $50,000 bail. Erwin said she could not disclose the woman's injuries or characterize her relationship to the player. She said Artest was cooperative when deputies arrived at his home. "We are aware of the situation and are in the process of gathering information," Kings spokesman Troy Hanson told the Sacramento Bee. This is just the latest in a string of incidents involving Artest, who was at the heart of the brawl with the Pistons in suburban Detroit. In early February, it was revealed that Artest paid $1,942 in boarding and impound fees because some of his dogs had spent a total of 77 nights at the Placer County pound since July. Animal control officers had gone to Artest's five-acre estate seven times in that period in response to callers' complaints about dogs being loose or not being fed. In 2004, Artest completed anger management for a domestic violence charge, and the mother of his children was charged with the same crime for hitting Artest in 2002. Other Kings have had trouble, as well. Coach Eric Musselman pleaded no contest in January to driving under the influence of alcohol, after an arrest in October. He was ordered to pay $580 in fines and penalties and spend 48 hours on a work project. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Around the Cactus League Texas Rangers: Showing he still has a few big swings in his bat, Sammy Sosa hit his first home run in 19 months Sunday to help the Texas Rangers beat the Kansas City Royals 5-0 in Surprise, Ariz. "It was good to get the first one out of the way," said Sosa, attempting a comeback after sitting out last season. "That was huge for me. Everyone wanted me to do that." The former Chicago Cubs slugger, who has 588 career homers, drove a 1-1 pitch from Luke Hudson over the left-center fence to lead off the second inning. It was Sosa's first home run since Aug. 4, 2005, with Baltimore. Elsewhere in the Cactus League: Arizona Diamondbacks: The Diamondbacks turned a triple play against the Mariners in the second inning Sunday. With runners on first and second, Michael Garciaparra lined Edgar Gonzalez's pitch to shortstop Stephen Drew. He stepped on second base to retire Mike Morse, then threw to first baseman Tony Clark to get Michael Wilson and complete the triple play. "It was amazing," Gonzalez said. "It's the first time in my life I've been in the game" for a triple play. It was the second triple play in Tucson in two days. The Los Angeles Angels turned one against the Colorado Rockies at Hi Corbett Field on Saturday. Also, Arizona lefty Randy Johnson, who had back surgery in October, threw breaking pitches for the first time this spring during a 63-pitch bullpen session. He'll throw again in the bullpen before the Diamondbacks' game against Texas in Surprise on Wednesday, but the club has not announced a timetable for his first spring training game. Oakland Athletics: Shortstop Bobby Crosby faced live pitching Sunday for the first time this spring and showed no lingering effects from the back injury that sidelined him for the final two months last season. "It's been a long time to wait but it was good," said Crosby, the 2004 AL Rookie of the Year. "I was antsy coming into spring but I didn't want to rush it. When you rush it, you hurt it." Crosby missed 63 games in 2006 with a stress fracture in his back and other injuries. Team doctors originally diagnosed the back injury as a strain, but Crosby later met with a private doctor who discovered the fracture. On Sunday, Crosby took four rounds of batting practice against Tony DeFrancesco, manager of the A's Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento. Crosby said he swung at 70-75 percent strength, but that was due more to a change in his swing than concerns about his back. San Diego Padres: Padres pitcher David Wells participated in a morning batting-practice session and said he expects to throw a bullpen session in the middle of the week. "It went very well," Wells said. "I don't feel 100 percent velocity-wise, but it's getting there." San Francisco Giants: Barry Bonds missed the Giants' spring training workouts Sunday for the second straight day because of the flu. Bonds wasn't in the Giants' lineup for a home exhibition game against the Seattle Mariners after coming down with the same bug that has affected much of the Giants' roster in the last two weeks. The seven-time NL MVP went 0-for-2 in his spring debut Friday, but won't play again until at least Tuesday. The Giants travel to face the Arizona Diamondbacks in Tucson on Monday, and Bonds rarely makes any road trip, let alone the longest in the Cactus League. Bonds has 734 homers entering the season, 22 shy of breaking Hank Aaron's major league record. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

from smoaky.com ***Breaking News*** JT's Brooks, "I'm staying at John Tyler." After meeting with TISD athletic director Danny Long, John Tyler head football coach Thomas Brooks called officials at Jasper I.S.D., and told them he would be staying at John Tyler. Coach Brooks told me on Sunday night, "I want to finish what I started", and today he'll tell his players the same thing during athletic period. As KTBB Sports and Smoaky.com reported on Friday night, Coach Brooks was in Jasper on Friday, and met with school officials. According to multiple sources, Jasper ISD increased their original financial package, along with perks to get Coach Brooks interested in returning to Jasper. Brooks was the head coach at Jasper in 2000 and 2001, before moving to Beaumont Ozen. Brooks is 12-10 in two seasons at John Tyler, with two playoff teams. The John Tyler football staff will have a different look whether Brooks leaves or not, because defensive coordinator David Gibbs has accepted the same position at Texas A&M-Commerce University. And, two other assistants on staff are involved in other head coaching searches, including Keeath Magee a finalist at Houston Westside.
