  4. Nederland boys 1, Little Cypress-Mauriceville 0 LITTLE CYPRESS -- No moment can have been more special all season for sophomore defender Ryan Washburn, whose goal lifted Nederland to a 1-0 overtime win past determined Little Cypress-Mauriceville on Tuesday night at Bear Stadium. A sweeper with defensive responsibilities, Washburn moved into the attacking area with about two minutes left in the second of two 10-minute overtime periods. He barely won a close pursuit with LC-M's goalkeeper for a free ball in front of the Bears' goal. The outside of Washburn's right foot found the perfect angle into the left side of the goal as Nederland may have saved its season. The Bulldogs improved to 8-7-1 and 8-3-1 and received strong performances from center midfielder Austin Wyble and fullback Taylor Rush. But Nederland did not appear to have a cinch scoring threat when Logan Soares passed the ball down the line to Rico Keeling. The odds improved after Keeling fired a shot into the middle of the attacking area. That's when Washburn made the game-winning play. "It was a beautiful game," NHS coach Rob Bledsoe said. "Their goalkeeper and their defense (LC-M's) made some outstanding plays. They jumped on our every scoring chance." The road may be even tougher this Friday when Nederland shall travel to Lumberton at 7 p.m.
  5. I got that one earlier..Congrats Jasper.

  7. Zepeda boots Titans, coach to first win HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News Omar Zepeda's hat trick enabled Port Arthur Memorial to grab its season's first win as well as the initial head-coaching victory for Titans boss Brian Morgan. The left-footed senior scored three times and guided his team all the way back from an early 3-0 deficit to claim a 4-3 decision over Channelview on Tuesday night at the PAISD auxiliary field. Memorial (1-7-1 and 1-6-1) trailed 3-0 just 20 minutes into the game before Zepeda scored his first of three goals and pulled the hosts within 3-1 at half. "It was by far our best game of the year," said Morgan. "It felt good. We played good enough and all the players felt it (the win) was going to come because we had kept on getting better." A solid Titans defense paced by left fullback Mario Flores blanked Channelview in the second half. Zepeda scored the game-winning goal with 25 minutes to play, taking an assist by Juan Carlos Garcia and beating the Falcons' goalkeeper. A major turning point occurred when Memorial scored twice in the first five minutes of the second half, erasing that 3-1 deficit. Ruben Diaz tied the game five minutes into the half after getting an assist by Zepeda, who scored on an unassisted breakaway goal with two minutes gone in the half. Leading in shots on goal 13-12, the Titans dropped Channelview to 2-10 and 1-7. Memorial visits Atascocita on Friday at 7 p.m.
  8. Tourney last chance for Hawk vets By Dave Rogers The Port Arthur News Win or lose today, Kevin Charles and Jared Westbrooks hope a 4 p.m. meeting between Lamar State-Port Arthur and second-place Brookhaven in the opening game of the Metro Athletic Conference tournament isn’t their last game in organized basketball. “Sure, I want to go somewhere else and play,†said Westbrooks, a 6-3 sophomore post out of Beaumont Central. “I’m just waiting on some coaches to call me. That’s why this is a real big trip for us.†Westbrooks and Charles, a 6-3 sophomore forward who graduated from Port Arthur Lincoln in 2002, are the top two players for the Seahawks in the scoring and rebounding categories. Westbrooks was the No. 8 scorer in the MAC with 14.7 points per game, according to the NJCAA, and Charles was No. 10 at 13.7 points per game. Charles, who set a school record with 28 points against Northwestern (La.) State’s JV on Nov. 29 and another single-game school mark with 17 rebounds against Angelina College Nov. 11, ranks No. 4 in MAC rebounding, with 9.3 caroms per game. Guard Cedric Tyler and forward Marlon Hill, who played for Lamar State a season ago, left after one season with the Seahawks to play at four-year colleges — Tyler at East Texas Baptist and Hill at UT-Tyler. But Westbrooks and Charles would be the first players for the Seahawks to put in two junior college seasons in the program before graduating to four-year programs. “We hope these kids go on to the next level and play if that’s what they want to do,†Seahawk coach Don Bryson said. “It’s up to somebody else. The players can’t do anything but work. “But they tell me there will be (four-year) coaches at the conference tournament and other coaches in the league have spoken highly for Kevin and Jared. Hopefully, we’ll get a few calls after the tournament.†The winner of this weekend’s tournament in the Dallas area advances to the March 15-17 Division III national tournament at Delhi, N.Y. The odds strongly favor league regular season champion North Lake winning it. The Seahawks, the seventh-seed after a 5-22 season (3-9 conference) play No. 2 seed Brookhaven (17-11, 8-4) in the first of a tripleheader today at Brookhaven’s Farmers Branch campus. Game 2, at 6 p.m., matches No. 3 seed Richland (15-14, 7-5) against No. 6 Mountain View (11-15, 4-8). The Nos. 4 and 5 teams, Eastfield (16-13, 5-7) and Cedar Valley (12-15, 5-7) face off at 8 p.m. Thursday’s semifinals take place at the Irving campus of North Lake. The Blazers (18-11, 10-2) take on the winner of the Lamar State-Brookhaven game at 6 p.m. and the two other Wednesday winners meet at 8 p.m. Thursday?s two winners meet at 7 p.m. Friday. Should anybody but North Lake survive Friday’s game, that school must beat North Lake on Saturday to earn the league trip. Forcing others to beat the regular season champion two times to grab the national tourney bid is how the Metro Conference fathers decided to avoid devaluing their regular season championship since the league gets only one national bid.
  9. Flores, Indians rally by Sterling By Dave Rogers The Port Arthur News PORT NECHES – The Baytown Sterling Rangers were playing home run derby with the offerings of Port Neches-Groves pitcher Jeremy Dominguez early in Tuesday night’s home baseball opener for the Indians. It was 6-0 after Sterling’s Sam Lindsey air-mailed his team’s third big fly of the third inning and fourth of the game off Dominguez. At that rate, PN-G’s 12-4 loss to the Rangers in last weekend’s La Porte tournament appeared almost merciful. Then came Shawn. Shawn Flores, one of PN-G’s top pitchers, came in from center field to relieve Dominguez. All he did was pitch five innings of no-hit ball, striking out eight. And it was his two-run double that highlighted a five-run PN-G fourth inning that started the Indians back to ultimately win the game 7-6 on a bases-loaded beaning of Jerin Spikes by Sterling’s stud junior fireballer, Hunter Cervenka. “Flores had an excellent performance on the mound,†PN-G coach Jay Stone said as his team improved to 2-2 on the season. “But I was just as impressed with his performance at the plate. “He moved the ball around. And he moved it hard with Cervenka pitching 93 mph. I was impressed with the way he put the ball in play. And put it in play hard.†Freshman Kane Benoit started PN-G’s comeback with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth. Spikes contributed an RBI single before Flores’ two-RBI double. In the bottom of the fifth, PN-G shortstop walked, advanced to second on a walk to Jon Carnahan and to third on Brett Doty’s single, ultimately scoring the tying run on a throwing error. Then Cervenka hit Spikes with a pitch, giving PN-G an improbable 7-6 lead despite the fact the Indians had only four hits in the game. But the Rangers, co-champs of District 22-5A last year, were powerless to come back. The only hits they got in the game – five – came in the first two-plus innings off Dominguez. Flores allowed only one baserunner, on a walk. Sterling second baseman Derek Brooks put his team on the scoreboard with a two-run homer in the top of the second inning. Cervenka led off the third with a solo blast and two batters later, center fielder Chase Dempsay blasted a two-run dinger to make it 5-0. Lindsey, batting next, went yard and it was 6-0. “Jeremy got a couple of those pitches up,†Stone allowed. “But they’ve got a good-hitting ballclub.†It was the second straight loss for the Rangers, now 4-2, who lost the championship game of the La Porte tournament to Clear Lake 7-2 Saturday. PN-G plays five games in this weekend’s West Brook tournament, including two Thursday – against Brazoswood at 2 p.m., and against Lake Charles Barbe at 5 p.m.
  10. Panthers fend off Bobcats, 4-3 Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — It took a questionable call on the last play of the game for the 4A Beaumont Ozen Panthers down the 3A Orangefield Bobcats. Down 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning and Zach Peevey on third, Brett Ramsey hit a shot to third. Never one not to hustle, Ramsey scooted down the line as Ozen third baseman Wrayn Taylor bobbled the ball. Taylor threw but Ramsey seemed to beat it out but the umpire, who was positioned in between shortstop and third called the senior out. The 4-3 loss spoiled an excellent pitching performance by a duo of freshman Orangefield pitchers. Jace Statum came in to pitch in the third inning and went four innings for the Bobcats (2-2) giving up just one hit on three walks to go with eight strike outs. Statum absorbed the loss as Ozen scored the winning run in the top of the seventh. Ozen’s Chris Roggett scored when Albert Lott grounded out to short. Roggett reached base on a walk and moved all the way to third when Josh Gardiner laid down a sacrifice bunt. Orangefield fans were also not pleased with the umpire’s call when Roggett slid in to third base. “Take the calls out of it and they (Ozen) just made the big plays when they had to,†Orangefield Coach Jeff Bennett said. “We had bases loaded at one point with no outs and could have blown it wide open. The only place you don’t want to hit the ball in that position is to the pitcher and that is what we had happen.†Orangefield loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with the game knotted at three. Ramsey and Todd Glaze each reached base on errors and Ben Ludwig then was hit by a pitch. Possum LaFleur then hit a ball right back to the pitcher which starter a 1-2-3 double-play. Corey Sheppard then drew a walk before Statum hit the final out to second. Ozen struck first in the top of the second when Taylor scored after an Orangefield error. Taylor reached first on a single to left. Danny Fowler, who had walked earlier, then scored as Roggett drew a bases-loaded walk off Orangefield starter Jacob Felts. Felts went two innings giving up two runs, one hit and three walks with one strike out. Orangefield took the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Peevey led things off with a single. Clint Worthy then reached on an error and Peevey was able to move to third. Both runners then scored when Ramsey reached on an error and then he moved to third on a wild pitch. Ludwig then brought Ramsey home with a RBI single to right. Ozen scored the tying run in the top of the sixth inning as Deston James led off by reaching on an error. He then was moved to second by a sacrifice bunt and scored from second on a RBI single to left by Taylor. “I am overjoyed with the way we are pitching right now,†Bennett said. “Statum and Felts are doing a great job at the top of the rotation and hopefully Zach will keep coming along.†Peevey hurled one inning giving up one run on no hits with one walk and no strike outs. The Bobcats return to action Thursday during the Orangefield Baseball Tournament. Orangefield will face Beaumont Central at 8 p.m. Thursday with action starting up at 10 a.m. when Warren takes on the Vidor JV
