  3. Crockett rolls past Lady Mustangs Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader HUNTSVILLE — In the night cap, District 20-3A's Crockett made sure the district would sweep District 21-3A out of the regional tournament. The Lady Bulldogs dispensed of the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs to move on to face district-rival Diboll in the Class 3A Regional Final at 1 p.m. Saturday. Crockett defeated WO-S 74-42 to take the Class 3A regional semi-final. As special as Brittney Scott was on Friday, her and the rest of the Lady Mustangs could not stop the Lady Bulldogs. Crockett played almost flawless basketball in the first half with just four turnovers and completed three-three point plays and also hitting two three-pointers. Scott finished her spectacular WO-S career with 24 points including five three-pointers. Equally impressive was Crockett's Courtney Taylor who finished with 24 points and 15 rebounds. Crockett out-scored WO-S 19-11 in the second period to take full control of the contest and led 36-21 at the break. The first half was the "Brittney Scott and Courtney Taylor Show" as the two future University of Houston Lady Cougars combined for 37 of the game's 57 points. Scott scored the Lady Mustangs first 15 points including 10 in the game's first eight minutes. The Lady Bulldogs trailed 10-7 midway through the first but went on a 7-0 run to close out the first frame and take a 17-10 lead into the second. Scott and Taylor each had 10 in the first frame. While Scott had three three-pointers in the first Taylor connected on back-to-back shots and a free throw during the Crockett run. Scott opened the second with four straight points but the Lady Bulldogs scored the next five points to make it 22-14. After a Scott trey and a Rebecca McMillion free throw, Taylor scored the game's next seven points to finish off the scoring in the first half. Crockett took a 36-21 lead into the break. Also ending her WO-S career was Dominique Riggs who snared 14 boards and Janea Hendreson who added five rebounds. Giving wO-S hope for the future is sophomore Kia Hartfield. Hartfield scored 11 points including three, three-pointers. Crockett out-rebounded WO-S 46-34 in the game. The Lady Bulldogs hit six three-point plays which included a bucket and a free throw. WO-S committed 19 turnovers in the contest while Crockett took care of the basketball and only turned the ball over nine times the entire contest. Jasmin English scored 13 points for the Lady Bulldogs while Lakevia Owens added 12.
  4. Diboll holds off Orangefield in OT Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader HUNTSVILLE — The Orangefield Lady Bobcats sensational run through the playoffs ran into a familiar brickwall Friday night at the Class 3A Regional Tournament. Making their second-straight trip to the semi-finals, the Lady Bobcats felll just short of a trip to the regional final to Diboll by a score of 65-58 in overtime. It took a strong and heart-filled run to even force overtime as the Lady Bobcats trailed by 15 at one point in the second period. In overtime, the Lady Bobcats (28-8) were forced to play without four starters after fouling out and simply could not keep up with the quick Lady Jacks (30-6). Diboll was a calm 9-for-10 from the free throw line in the overtime period and forced five overtimes in the extra frame. In all, eight players from both teams fouled out of the contest as the referees played a big part in the style of play. Orangefield was led by senior Kristy Sanders who chimed in 15 points in her last game as a Lady Bobcat. Senior Jessica Shores, the only remaining starter in the overtime period, had 11 points, six rebounds and six steals to finish off her great Orangefield career. A total of seven Lady Bobcats played their last game for Orangefield. In all four years around the court for the Lady Bobcats, the group reached the playoffs each season, including the back-to-back trips to Huntsville. Diboll was led by Mone Deason who scored 18 points and hit six free throws. The Lady Bobcats took their first lead of the contest at 54-53 with :25 remaining in the fourth period. Shortly after, Sanders was called for her fifth personal which sent Crystal Spencer to the line. Spencer could only connect on the second freebie allowing Orangefield to settle for the overtime period. The Lady Bobcats survived a 11-0 run the Lady Jacks went on to start the contest. Sanders broke the drought for Orangefield making it 11-2 with 2:30 left in the first period. After a Diboll free throw, Shores drained a three pointer and Sanders followed it up with another bucket making it 12-7 in favor of Diboll. The Lady Jacks then scored the first period's final three points making it 15-7. Orangefield did not help itself in the first period with eight turnovers committed. Orangefield made its biggest run in the third period when holding Diboll to just four points in the frame. The Lady Bobcats cut a 35-26 deficit to just three heading into the fourth. Laura Riddick scored four points in the third to lead the charge. Orangefield committed 31 turnovers in the game while Diboll committed 28. Roy ended her Orangefield career with 10 points. Junior Laura Riddick added eight points, five rebounds and three steals. The Lady Bobcats were 21-for-31 from the free throw line.

  6. Lady Titans' Pulido wins shootout at Humble HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER The Port Arthur News HUMBLE -- The first Port Arthur soccer win over Humble ever took quite some time to accomplish. Both teams went eight rounds into a sudden-death shootout before Memorial's junior Maricela Pulido made a high attempt of 18 yards over a tall Humble goalkeeper. The only thing that mattered was that Pulido scored the night's only goal at Turner Stadium and Memorial claimed a 1-0 shocker over the Lady Wildcats. Pulido and Memorial raised their record 7-6 overall and 2-5 in District 21-5A. The team erupted for quite a celebration after eventually prevailing in the shootout. "I thought our girls played one heckuva game from offense to defense," Memorial coach Phil Mattingly said. "It was the best game we have played on defense since we played against Channelview. "We barely missed some shots in the last 10 minutes that could have won the game for us but I have to say that Maricela played a tremendous game. She played with two bad ankles." The teams went directly to a 35-yard shootout after playing 80 minutes of scoreless regulation time. Mattingly believed the chemistry of Cynthia Rodriguez at sweeper, Jessica Cuellar (nine saves) at goalkeeper, Susan Ward at left fullback, Heather Reynolds at stopper and Claudia Ramiro at right fullback proved instrumental in Memorial's win. Memorial will visit Channelview on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
  7. Henry steps up for Kelly The Kelly Bulldogs are in for a battle today when the TAPPS basketball playoffs take them to Belton for the Class 6A regionals. And there’s no one coach James Knowles wants battling for him more than junior Torrejon Henry. “He knows how to play the game,†the former Port Arthur coach says of one of four Port Arthur students on his Bulldog roster. “He’s pretty smart.†Smart like a fox. So you can bet the 6-foot-2, 185-pound Henry will be looking for 6-4, 260-pound fellow junior Kheeston Randall and 6-3 senior Will Taylor to help him try to contain San Antonio Antonian’s Myles Walker today. Walker, described by his hometown newspaper as “a beast,†is 6-foot-9 and averaging 18.2 points and 11.9 rebounds per game this year for the Apaches, the champions of District 2-6A. “We’ve been trying to get a scouting report,†Knowles says. “One person says he (Walker) is 6-7, another says 6-8 and a third guy says he’s 6-9. We can’t get his height right, but he’s good. That’s what everybody says.†Kelly takes a 24-10 record into today’s 6:45 p.m. game. Antonian is 24-9. Winner advances to next week’s state tournament at the University of Texas at Tyler. “We’re not worried about anybody’s height or size or anything,†says Henry, already a member of two straight state champion squads at Kelly. “People may think my height is a weakness but my jumping ability makes up for that.†Henry leads the Bulldogs in rebounding and is one of the team’s top scorers night in and night out. He was named after a U.S. Air Force base in Madrid, Spain, and, for him, the sky’s the limit. “I’m a guard, actually, but they put me down on the post and I like battling with the big men,†he says. “The key to rebounding is to box out.†“We need his quickness,†says Knowles, the head coach at Port Arthur Thomas Jefferson before moving the Kelly in 2003. Also making the move from P-A to Kelly -- besides Henry – are sophomores Sherrod Narcisse, Roman Vaughn and E.J. Cockrell. Narcisse is the son of former Lincoln High great Earl Evans, Knowles says. The Bulldogs have been to the state championship game each of Knowles’ four full seasons with the team. And they won the last three. A year ago they beat District 3-6A rival Houston St. Thomas in the championship game, despite having lost to the Eagles earlier in district.
