Bean rules 3,200 at Bulldog Relays Van Wade The Orange Leader NEDERLAND — The 2007 Southeast Texas track season got off with flying colors Friday at the 43rd annual Nederland Bulldog Relays. Eighteen boys teams and 13 girls teams participated in the large event. Barbers Hill High School conitnued its grand track tradition as both the Lady Eagles and Ealges walked away with the team crowns. The Lady Eagles won with 142 points, easily outsidtancing second-place Beaumont Ozen (898 3/4). The Eagle boys won with 110 points while the host Bulldogs were a distant second with 85. Little Cypress-Mauriceville senior Drew Bean, who won the Class 4A state championship in cross country, started his campaign with an awesome start, strolling to an easy win in the 3,200 meters with an amazing time of 9:27.38. 21-3A girls hoopsters are top-notch Van Wade The Orange Leader Everyone knew that the District 21-3A girls playoff race would be a “doozyâ€. The front-runners that include district champion Silsbee, Orangefield and West Orange-Stark made it through to the playoffs but it certainly wasn’t easy. Just how good was District 21-3A? How about all three of those teams being in the final eight in the region with the regional quarterfinals coming up. WO-S and Silsbee will hook up for the fourth time this season probably Wednesday of this week to see who will punch their ticket to the 3A Region III Tournament in Huntsville. Last season, it was the Lady Mustangs that sent Silsbee home in the same round. In 2005, it was the Lady Tigers that sent WO-S home packing. The Lady Mustangs (22-8) will surely enter the game with a chip on their shoulder as third-place WO-S fell to Silsbee in the previous three meetings this season, all of them tight. Silsbee dumped Wharton 69-51 Friday. Orangefield (27-7) made quick work of the West Columbia Lady Roughnecks in the area round West Columbia checked in with a 30-0 mark and left Mont Belvieu with a 30-1 record after being spanked by the Lady Bobcats. Orangefield, with such strong senior leadership, built an 18-8 lead in the first quarter, increased it to 38-14 at the half and cruised to a 62-37 victory. Kids like Kristy Sanders, Jessica Shores, Paige Roy and KK Little, they know what being in a big game is all about. Next up for the Lady Bobcats, a date with the Cleveland Lady Indians Wednesday. Wouldn’t it be sweet for Orangefield to qualify for the regional tournament by beating a team it fell hard to a couple years ago in the Montagne Center? Cleveland easily dispatched Smithville 68-31 in the area round. The Lady Mustangs played a different style to stun fifth-ranked Navasota (34-3) in Humble Friday. The Lady Mustangs slowed the pace down and eventually were able to pick apart a young Lady Rattler team. Senior Brittney Scott directed traffic and put up her usual 25 points but the surrounding troops of seniors in Janae Hendreson, Dominique Riggs and Rebecca McMillon played so well as far as crashing the boards and playing hard-nosed defense. The most impressive thing about the win — WO-S committed just six turnovers. Not bad for an intensity-filled playoff tilt. You have to wonder what the other 21-3A teams in Kirbyville, Hardin-Jefferson, Hamshire-Fannett and Bridge City are thinking. Kirbyville could easily be the best 3A team in the state that didn’t qualify for the playoffs. H-J coach Carol Sims was on hand to watch Orangefield’s whipping of West Columbia. The H-F coaching staff was in Humble to give WO-S support. That’s what I call rootin’ for your “homies.†Coach Jackie Scales at Bridge City has to be wondering what life would’ve been like in District 22-3A or even 22-4A. The Lady Cardinals placed seventh in a rugged 21-3A. WO-S defeated 22-3A second-place team Liberty 57-22 and Orangefield dropped the third-place unit Coldspring 80-48 in bidistrict. I honestly believe that if Scales’ crew competed in 22-3A, the Lady Cardinals could’ve easily been the second-place team or at least the third. Let’s not forget how BC fared against 22-4A foes in non-district as they racked up wins over Little Cypress-Mauriceville, Port Neches-Groves, Nederland and Vidor. BC could’ve easily slipped into that third-place spot in 22-4A. Instead, the Lady Cards finished 2-12 in 21-3A. To put it frankly, there probably wasn’t a better 3A district in the state. The thorns in Orangefield and WO-S’ sides from last year have already been eliminated from the scene. China Spring, which nipped Orangefield in the Regional Tournament last year and which went on to win the 3A state title, fell to Crockett 54-53 in the area round. Lorena, which dropped WO-S in the Regional Tournament, fell to Diboll 58-41. Madisonville, who defeated Liberty Hill 54-43, and Fairfield, which nipped Robinson 53-48, are the other two regional contenders. It’s hard to grab that crystal ball but it sure would be nice to have two teams from our district return back to the Regional Tournament. We’re guaranteed of at least one but with the way this year has been going, two could be making that trip to Sam Houston State in Huntsville. Everyone is certainly rootin’ for it.

Hancken moves on to Field of Dreams By Jason Rollinson Southeast Texas News Group Baseball is America’s national pasttime, with a history dating back to the late 19th century. Few players and coaches have been able to tell stories that span six decades, but Morris Medlock “Buddy†Hancken had no problem talking about the game for hours. Hancken, born in Birmingham, Ala., but a resident of Orange since retiring in 1991, died Thursday at The Meadows in Orange at the age of 92. However, the tales he told to many will live on for generations. Because his body was donated to science at the Parker Chiropractic School in Dallas, a memorial service will not be held until a later date. “He told me that maybe someone can learn something,†Kay Kline, his oldest daughter, said. “Maybe there was something they could discover that would help others live longer.†The family-man, father of two, grandfather of two and great-grandfather of two began his baseball career in the minor leagues in the late 1930s with the Toledo Mud Hens and Seattle Rainiers. He later grabbed the chance of a lifetime when the “man in the suit,†Hall-of-Fame manager Connie Mack, purchased his contract and knew he could catch knuckleballs and wanted him as the fourth catcher for the Philadelphia Athletics. Several days passed and Hancken was privileged enough to meet the baseball greats, most notably Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth. “Most of the players didn’t like Cobb, but Buddy was a young guy and decided to go over and introduce himself when they played the Tigers,†said Dr. Bill McCurdy, Houston baseball historian and acting president of the Board of Directors for the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame. “It was a cordial conversation and Buddy was always glad he did that. “He also had the same experience and shook hands with Babe Ruth days later,†McCurdy said. Then on May 14, 1940, Hancken finally got his chance. “One day I got word down in the bullpen that Mr. Mack wanted to see me right away,†Hancken told McCurdy in an earlier conversation. “We were beating up on Cleveland at Shibe Park and I guess Mr. Mack wanted to give the regular guy a little rest. He told me to put my equipment on and go catch the top of the 9th.†Hancken got his one big-league putout on a strike out, but failed to get an at-bat. “Getting a chance to play gave me the confidence to speak up to Mr. Mack about playing more. I said, ‘Mr. Mack, please either play me more or get rid of me,’†Hancken said. “Mr. Mack didn’t say much, but I got my answer. The next day he sent me down to their farm club at Williamsport and I spent the rest of the season there.†Hancken, who also served as a Master Mason for 65 years, went on to fight in World War II for the Marine Corps stationed as a BARI (Browning automatic rifle instructor) but would not leave baseball behind forever. He managed 10 different minor league teams and also spent time as a professional scout for several clubs. In 1950, Hancken rented his Beaumont home to Hall-of-Famer Rogers Hornsby, who was the manager of the Texas League Beaumont Exporters for the season. Hancken went on to accept the manager’s job for the Waco Pirates of the Class B Big State League, where he would manage current Cincinnati Reds manager Jack McKeon and Joe Brown, son of the late comedian, Joe E. Brown.

Wildcatters hang 7 on Ice Pilots BEAUMONT - No algebraic equation is needed for Texas Wildcatters coach Malcolm Cameron. He came up with a much more simple way to figure out what his team needs to make the ECHL playoffs. "We figure we need at least 90 points to make the playoffs," Cameron said Saturday after his team's 7-3 victory over the Pensacola Ice Pilots at Ford Arena. "That's our goal. Once we get 90 points, I feel very comfortable we'll have a playoff spot." Texas has 20 games left on its 72-game schedule and is 23 points shy of the 90-point mark. The Wildcatters can get two more points in the last of three straight games against Pensacola at 2 p.m. today. The Wildcatters lead the eight-team South Division. The top five teams make the playoffs. Texas leads sixth-place Charlotte team 12 points. Teams earn two points for a win and one point for an overtime or shootout loss. "Anything less than 90 points, and we'll be sitting there waiting to see what else happens," said forward Kevin Baker. "We'll keep doing what we're doing, and 90 points should guarantee us a playoff spot, and maybe we'll get first place." Baker and Mike Bayrack both had two goals and two assists Saturday. Marco Rosa assisted on four goals. Alex Leavitt had two third-period goals. James Sanford scored one in the first period. Jonathan Paiement had a plus-5 rating. Texas converted on one of five power plays, although one goal was scored two seconds after a power play expired. Goalie Matt Yeats stopped 24 of 27 shots. Pensacola scored its first goal when Yeats reached up and the puck deflected off his glove and bounced into the net. Pensacola's other two goals came during a pair of its seven power plays. The Texas victory avenged a 5-4 overtime loss suffered one night earlier against Pensacola, which has the fewest wins (15) and points (32) in the 25-team league. "We've struggled against the lower teams in the standings because maybe we figure we don't have to work as hard, but I think you have to work harder." Cameron said. "Those teams that are behind you in the standings want to beat you so bad that it's a feather in their cap, so they raise their game to a level they might not bring all the time." The Wildcatters have won 29 of 52 games and have 67 points. Gwinnett and Florida are tied for second with 64 points. The combined 12-point effort from Baker, Bayrack and Rosa was their best this season. "When I recruited my team this summer, we built it around Marco because he signed first and I knew him best," Cameron said. "Then with Bayrack's speed and Baker's finish, it's worked out real well for them and the team." The trio played on the same line at the beginning of the season. Call-ups to the American Hockey League and a midseason slump caused Cameron to juggle his top line. "It helps to break them up for a while, and actually it worked out well," Cameron said. "Brandin Cote was playing with Bayrack and Baker, and they were doing well. Rosa was playing with Leavitt and (Olivier) Proulx, and they were doing well." Cote is now with the AHL's Norfolk Admirals but is expected to return soon. Rosa said he felt comfortable with Baker and Bayrack. "Sometimes you take a step back to see what you're missing," Rosa said. "We did that and came back and we've been doing good since we came together." Cameron also lauded the play of forward Jason Beeman. "He did all the things tonight that win you playoff games," Cameron said. "He blocked shots. He hit. He forechecked. He had great speed. He did all the dirty things that win you games. We need more of that." Signing day All Wildcatters players will be available for autographs today at the first of two upcoming full-team autograph sessions. The second one will be Feb. 25.
