Nederland swimmers make their mark The Port Arthur News The Nederland High School swim team, coached by Judy Sandoval, has wrapped up a record-setting season that saw Nick Hoezler named District 21-4A male swimmer of the year for the second time and Sam Wickizer voted female swimmer of the year for the first time. After a strong showing at the regional meet last week in Sugarland, one Bulldog is still swimming. Wickizer advanced to the Texas State Swim Meet Friday and Saturday at the University of Texas. She placed third in the 100-yard butterfly and fourth in the 500-yard freestyle at regional. Others who placed in regional included: Nick Hoezler, who took fifth in the 50-yard freestyle and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle, a race in which he set a school record. Nederland boys 2, Hardin-Jefferson 1 NEDERLAND -- Winless Hardin-Jefferson cooked up an upset brew at Nederland but Rico Keeling stirred the drink for the winners after all. The Bulldogs senior midfielder produced one goal in each half as a flat Nederland club looked ahead toward Friday's visit to The Reservation. Yet in the one department that truly mattered, Nederland still salvaged a 2-1 win over the Hawks at Bulldog Stadium. Nederland (6-6 and 6-2) dismayed its head coach Rob Bledsoe by coming out flat but the Dogs owned a decisive edge in shots on goal, 23-7, and the thoughts of many Nederland players had turned to Friday's game at Port Neches-Groves. "We had a few players out so we had to move a few people around," Bledsoe explained. "We came out flat and I think a lot of the kids were looking forward to Friday's game."

They combined for 7,344 rushing yards and 99 touchdowns. That's an average of 1,838 yards and 24.8 TDs for each of the four. As if that's not impressive enough, they also passed for over 2,700 yards and another 20 TDs, and only two of them were quarterbacks. This foursome - Tramain Thomas of East Chambers, Justin Williams of Deweyville, Brandon Williams of Central and Micah Mosley of Nederland - are finalists for the Willie Ray Smith Award for the best offensive player in Southeast Texas for the 2006 high school season. One - as voted by a panel of area sports journalists - will receive the honor at the 15th Annual Willie Ray Smith Sr. Awards Banquet set for 7 p.m. today in the ballroom of the Elegante Hotel. Defensive finalists are Memorial defensive back Barry Valcin, West Orange-Stark cornerback Earl Thomas and linebackers Andre August of Central, Paul Trammell of East Chambers and Jacody Coleman of West Brook. The Smith Awards are named in memory of Willie Ray Smith Sr., the legendary coach who compiled a 251-99-10 record and won two state championships in 33 seasons at Charlton-Pollard, Orange Wallace and Lufkin Dunbar high schools. This year's nine finalists are already well-decorated for their 2006 accomplishments. Mosley was a first-team Class 4A All-State selection by The Associated Press after rushing for a school-record 2,403 yards and 29 TDs and scoring three other TDs on receptions. Tramain Thomas, the only underclassman among the finalists, was voted the District 24-2A most valuable player after rushing for 1,249 yards and 22 TDs and passing for an additional 1,381 yards and nine TDs. Justin Williams, who ran from 2,298 yards and 32 TDs, was the District 24-2A offensive MVP, and Brandon Williams, who accumulated 2,699 yards of total offense (1,394 rushing and 1,305 passing) and accounted for 27 TDs, was the Offensive Player of the Year on The Enterprise's 2006 Super Gold Team as well as the District 22-4A MVP. Despite missing some time with a knee injury, Coleman logged 117 tackles and 7.5 sacks for West Brook and was The Enterprise's Super Gold Defensive Player of the Year. Trammell had 119 tackles, two sacks, five hurries, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries and earned Defensive MVP honors in District 24-2A. August's defensive line read 65 solo tackles (14 behind the line of scrimmage), 35 assists, nine sacks, two interceptions, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one deflected pass. He was a first-team All-District 22-4A performer and a member of The Enterprise's Super Gold Team. Earl Thomas, a do-it-all type on both sides of the line for WO-S, had 67 tackles, three interceptions, two kickoff returns for TDs and averages of 33.0 yards on kickoff returns and 15.3 yards on punt returns. He was the District 21-3A MVP and a Super Golf Team member. Valcin had 73 solo tackles, 52 assists, four interceptions, two fumble recoveries and 12 deflected passes, and was a unanimous pick to the All-District 21-5A Team and also a Super Gold selection. The performances of tonight's finalists did not go unnoticed by the college scouts. Just last week, Brandon Williams followed through on his commitment to Texas A&M as did Earl Thomas on his commitment to the University of Texas. Mosley chose the University of North Texas, while Valcin is headed to Baylor, Coleman to Iowa and August to Blinn College. Also, Tramain Thomas is already considered a blue-chip prospect in the recruiting class for 2008. David Castles, the director of athletics at Kilgore Junior College, will be the featured speaker for tonight's banquet. Last year's Smith Awards winners were WO-S' Kenneth Beasley for offense and Jasper's Sean Weatherspoon for defense. BREAKOUT: 2007 SMITH AWARDS FINALISTS Offense Tramain Thomas, Jr., QB, East Chambers Justin Williams, Sr., RB, Deweyville Brandon Williams, Sr., QB, Central Micah Mosley, Sr., RB, Nederland Defense Jacody Coleman, Sr., LB, West Brook Paul Trammell, Sr., LB, East Chambers Barry Valcin, Sr. DB, Memorial Andre August, Sr., LB, Central Earl Thomas, Sr., DB, West Orange-Stark

Ozen girls lose DAYTON - For three quarters, Ozen had an answer for Crosby. But the fourth quarter proved to be too much. The Lady Cougars made their first seven shots from the field in the final frame and put a stubborn Lady Panther team away with a 64-48 win Tuesday in the first round of the Class 4A girls basketball playoffs. "I think we kind of settled down," Crosby coach Edwin Egans said. "Our emotions were sky high. I think this was a big win for us. A lot of the kids haven't been through this and it will help us. We did what we were supposed to do to get the win." Creshun White led all scorers with 29 points in the game, shooting 8-of-10 from the field and 13-of-16 from the free throw line. Each time Ozen pulled to within one or two points it was White who put the game in her hands and made a play. Ozen fell behind 42-36 late in the third after White scored four consecutive points. The Lady Panthers pulled within four and forced a turnover with three seconds remaining in the quarter. A'lexus Brannon took the inbounds pass on the far side of the court and nailed a 3 from just inside the half court line to put Ozen within 42-41 leading into the final quarter. White scored to open the quarter and Daronica Williams added a 3 to give the Lady Cougars a 47-41 lead. Much like they had the entire game, Ozen answered on a basket by Brannon. But this time, Crosby did not allow them to get back in the game. Bianca Johnson hit a 3-pointer from the corner to give the Lady Cougars a seven-point lead, and from there, Crosby took control of the game. The Lady Panthers only made 3-of-11 from the field in the final quarter. "I kind of took a deep breath when they made that 3," Egans said. "I was thinking here we go again, but it worked out. Tonight Creshun got creative with her moves. She made a move to get them off-balance. They were packing it in and trying to keep us from penetration and gave us some open looks. We have some girls that can shoot from the outside when they get their feet set." Ozen came out strong in the first quarter taking a 7-3 lead. Kayla Celestine hit a 3 to get the Lady Panther started. The freshman had five points in the quarter and 14 in the game to lead Ozen. Crosby rebounded and took a 16-15 lead into the second quarter. It was then that White began to assert herself scoring 10 of her points. Ozen closed within 23-22 but a three-point play by White lifted the Lady Cougars as they went on to take a 30-25 lead into the half. Other leading scorers for Crosby were Williams with 12 and Johnson with 11. Ozen's Brannon and Sojourner Brown each had nine.

BOSTON (AP) -- Al Jefferson was happily watching the final seconds of garbage time from the Boston bench when Delonte West gave him a piece of advice. "We've got nothing to celebrate," Jefferson recalled after Boston ended its franchise-record losing streak at 18 games by beating the Milwaukee Bucks 117-97. "We should feel good about it. But don't run off the court like we won the championship." Paul Pierce scored 32 points and Gerald Green had 21 in 20 minutes on Wednesday night to lead the Celtics to their first victory since Jan. 5 and send them into the All-Star break with a sigh of relief. After the break, Boston embarks on a five-game road trip - four of them against teams in playoff position. "I thought that if we could win this game, it gives us a fighting chance out there. That's all we want," coach Doc Rivers said. "The guys are in there taking monkeys off each others' backs and all that stuff. It's just a relief to get it done." The half-filled house, winnowed by the first major snowstorm of the winter, gave the Celtics a standing ovation for the final minute as they picked up their first victory since Jan. 5. The Celtics won just two of 24 games when Pierce was out with foot and elbow injuries, breaking the franchise record of 13 straight losses and heading for the league record of 24 (23 in one season). But they took advantage of the Bucks' own woes, rallying from a 15-point deficit to go ahead in the second quarter and opening a double-digit lead in the third. "We could have easily ended up in that zone with NBA-record losing streaks," Pierce said. "We definitely eyed this game. Milwaukee had a lot of pieces missing, so we wanted to take advantage of that." Mo Williams scored 31, Charlie Bell had 24 and Brian Skinner scored 13 with 11 rebounds for the Bucks, who lost their fourth straight. Milwaukee is 3-17 since Michael Redd went out with a strained patellar tendon in his left knee. "Everybody knows" about the Celtics' streak, Williams said. "You don't want to be the team that they beat. That's why it hurts a little more." Jefferson scored 17 with 10 rebounds. Wally Szczerbiak returned after missing two games with a sprained right ankle and scored 14; it was the first time Pierce and Szczerbiak both played since a win on Dec. 16 gave the Celtics a five-game winning streak. "This is not the team that lost 18 in a row," Bell said. "With Paul, he gives them a whole other element. They're a much better team. If they didn't beat us, they were going to beat somebody else. I don't think they were going to get the record." Boston found the perfect opponent in Milwaukee, which is on a bit of a slide itself. Charlie Villanueva was out with an ankle sprain he picked up in Tuesday's game against Dallas, a game in which Milwaukee got just two free throws in the last 7:05 and blew a 16-point, second-half lead. Playing back-to-back nights amid mounting injuries - Mo Williams' shoulder, and Earl Boykins picked up a cut on his right leg that needed stitches in the first half - the Bucks seemed to wear down again. After leading by 13 at the end of the first quarter and as many as 15 in the second, Milwaukee gave up an 18-4 Boston run that turned the Celtics' 48-37 deficit into a 55-52 lead. Pierce, Green and Pierce again hit consecutive 3-pointers during a 1:22 span to cut the deficit from 11 to two points, and Pierce hit another 3 in the last 30 seconds to give the Celtics a 58-54 lead. In the second quarter alone, Green scored 16 and Pierce 13, going 4-for-4 and 3-for-4 from 3-point range, respectively; Rajon Rondo had eight assists. The Celtics piled it on in the third, using a 12-2 run to stretch a two-point lead to 74-62. Pierce had six during the stretch and assisted on Brian Scalabrine's 3-pointer that put Boston up by 12 with 6:07 left. Notes:@ The public address announcer thanked fans for braving the storm, which sprinkled two inches on Boston and more than a foot on Western Massachusetts. ... Villanueva was in uniform and on the bench because he did not have the proper attire to be scratched from the lineup. ... Rondo had 11 assists in all.

kogt Tuesday: The Washington Nationals won their arbitration case over their presumptive ace, right-hander John Patterson. A three-member panel in Phoenix ruled that Patterson -- who went 1-2 with a 4.43 ERA last season -- should earn $850,000, not the $1.85 million for which he had asked. He made $450,000 last season.
