West Brook could benefit from ineligible player ruling By Dave Rogers The Port Arthur News Athletic officials at Channelview are appealing an ineligible player ruling that could knock its boys’ basketball team out of the running for the playoffs. If the Falcons lose their Tuesday morning appeal to the UIL, Beaumont West Brook and Humble could lock up a playoff spot before their District 21-5A showdown Tuesday night in Beaumont. Kingwood, the No. 2-ranked team in Texas, has clinched the 21-5A championship and Port Arthur Memorial cannot be dislodged from second place. Pending Tuesday morning’s UIL decision, West Brook is in third, a game ahead of Humble and Channelview. Beginning this season, the top four finishers in each Class 5A district advance to the playoffs in all team sports, so the possibility existed of a three-way tie for the final two spots. It was unclear Monday exactly what the punishment would be if the original ruling was upheld that Channelview had used an ineligible player. That conclusion was arrived at Friday by the District 21-5A executive committee. Normally, teams are forced to forfeit games in which ineligible players were used. Channelview has district wins this season over West Brook (Dec. 5), Memorial (Jan. 2) and Humble (Jan. 30). Memorial, 27-5 for the season, hosts seventh-place Baytown Sterling, 10-22, tonight at 7 p.m. at Titan Gym in the regular season finale for both teams. The game might see the Titan debut of Chris Mayfield, a 6-foot-4 Nederland transfer who has missed the first three months of the season after knee surgery. The Port Neches-Groves boys wind up their season at Little Cypress-Mauriceville and Nederland plays host tonight to District 22-4A playoff qualifer Beaumont Central.

Memorial Falls To Northshore 56-50

North Shore ends Memorial's postseason MONT BELVIEU - As easy as it was to gain the lead, it seemed even easier to lose it. North Shore, which trailed by seven points at halftime, outscored Memorial 34-21 in the second half to clinch a 56-50 victory in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs at Barbers Hill High School. "This was a tough loss for us," said Memorial coach Joseph Fonteneaux. "We wanted to go farther in the playoffs, but it didn't turn out that way." Memorial (20-14) was coming off a 47-43 overtime loss to Kingwood last Friday. It was a district playoff game to determine the No. 2 and 3 playoffs seeds. It had been three years since Memorial made its last playoff appearance. The Titans lost to Pasadena Dobie in the first round that season. North Shore (27-7) is the District 22-5A runner-up. "We had the lead going into the third quarter," Fonteneaux said. "We just couldn't buy a bucket in third quarter. We took good shots but they didn't go in." North Shore outscored Memorial 16-7 in the third quarter to gain a two-point lead at the end of the period. North Shore's Lauren Flores scored eight of the Mustangs points during that run. The Titans missed eight shot attempts in the third period. "I thought we played with a little bit more intensity in the second half," said North Shore coach Allison Campbell. "We have a very young and inexperienced team, so I am proud of the way they never gave up in the game." Memorial's Treasure Eddie and Amber Kinlaw each hit two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter that allowed the Titans to remain within four points. But costly turnovers and missed shots led to their downfall. The Titans had three turnovers and missed nine shot attempts in the final period. Led by Krystal Hill's 12 points, North Shore outscored Memorial 18-14 to clinch a second-round game. Hill led the Mustangs with 25 points, while teammate Flores had 20. Memorial's Brittany Kinlaw led the Titans with 19 points. Treasure Eddie had 13 points. "The seniors laid the ground work for us this year," Fonteneaux said. "We made it back to the playoffs after a three year absence so they have something to be proud of. Hopefully, we can continue to improve with our success each year." -
**CHRIS STUMP BECOMES NEW AD/HC AT BRIDGE CITY**

BC adds 'another' Stump to list Tom Halliburton The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — Ronnie Thompson's coaching tree and Ron Stump's immediate family tree has produced another area head football coach. Cris Stump and Bridge City found Monday night to be the right place and the right time for the 43-year-old Stump to accept his first-ever head coaching position. Cardinal Country will have more than Redbirds filling its airways next fall. Stump and the spread offense are bound to wing it here just as they have at West Brook and several previous outposts. A proven offensive football coach with a pass-happy approach, Stump has accepted a two-year contract in the $62,000 annual salary range. Bridge City officials hope Stump can start "as soon as possible" so that he can catch up on the Cardinals' off-season program. "I'm very excited about it," Stump said, wearing a Cardinal red tie for the occasion. "The sooner, the better.... I think it's something that I've wanted to do for a long time." Bridge City schools superintendent Darrell Myers submitted the recommendation to his seven trustees on Monday night. Myers could only hope that Stump's tenure would be far less stormy than the blustery weather conditions outside the BCISD board room. Since his wife Rebecca formerly worked in the school district and two of their four children currently attended school in Bridge City, the adaptation period should not exist whatsoever for the third of Ron Stump's four sons. "That was one of the deals I tried to get across to them (the school board last week in the interview)," Stump said. For those keeping score, the oldest one and youngest one -- Ron and Craig -- still coach at Beaumont West Brook. Former McNeese State standout Don resides in Lake Charles and remains the lone sibling to avoid the coaching profession. Myers and BC's board also were quite fond of Deweyville head coach Dwight Bickham and BC offensive coordinator Troy Bolton but board president Brian Beard cited the belief that the addition of Stump could "generate some new energy" for the Cardinals program. "I feel very positive that Cris is going to do great in this district," Beard said. "I have nothing but good to say about him. I feel there's new zeal that's going to come forward here... Dr. Myers and the screening committee brought the three names forward last week. "I think (Dwight) Bickham and (Troy) Bolton made it a tough choice for us. But we had a meeting and discussed the candidates. I feel he (Myers) made a great recommendation." Stump is quite familiar with shouldering the chore of play selection. He assumed those duties at Barbers Hill and shared them at Katy Cinco Ranch after that. The Katy school reached the 5A playoffs for the first time in school history in 2004. When younger brother Craig moved from Kelly to West Brook, Cris stepped in as offensive coordinator for two seasons. Stump said he had interviewed for head coaching positions at four places prior to BC. "We're going to spread it out and throw it around and see what happens," he said. "When Craig got hired (at West Brook), he told the paper it was going to 'Basketball on Grass' and when Ronnie got back to Port Arthur (Memorial), he called it 'Star Wars'. I don't know yet what we're going to call it. I don't have a name for it. "We're going to come in here and build a program.... work ethic... accountability.... We're going to go to work and that shouldn't change." Dr. Myers indicated that he guaranteed Stump the right to hire one varsity assistant coach. Any adjustments beyond that within BC's staff would have to occur by attrition. Stump replaced the 56-year-old Claude Tarver who compiled a 36-19 record with three playoff teams over a five-year tenure. One of the most successful Southeast Texas coaches ever, Tarver resigned Dec. 19 after his wife Karon accepted an administrative position with the Fort Worth Independent School District. -

Lady Bobcats drill Coldspring Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader DAYTON — Orangefield Lady Bobcats Coach did not get the memo that boxing gloves were going to be needed Tuesday night against Coldspring. In the Lady Bobcats Region III bi-district playoff game, Orangefield shot six technical fouls in the fourth period and pulled away in the second half to win 80-48. Coldspring (11-9) committed 32 fouls in the contest held at Dayton High School. Orange field (26-7) now moves on to face West Columbia (29-0) at Barbers Hill High School Friday. Ancelot said the time of the game was not set in stone because the Lady Bobcats could be the second game in a double-header on Friday. As for as Tuesday's win, Ancelot was just glad to get out with no serious injuries to her team. "It was so physical that it got sloppy," Ancelot said. "I am proud of our kids for keeping their composure down the stretch. We were able to use our emotions to our advantage. In the end, we were the team able to finish the ball game." Lost in all the madness were two dynamic games played by Orangefield's Kaylin Little and Kristy Sanders. Little fought her way to 39 points, 10 steals and seven rebounds. Sanders was able to snare another triple-double with 19 points, 10 steals and 11 assists. The first half was not as good for the Lady Bobcats as the Lady Trojans hung around and looked to make a game of things. Orangefield started out hot taking a 12-2 lead midway through the first period as Sanders scored 10 of her 19 in the first frame. Coldspring closed the gap before the second period as Orangefield took a 18-10 lead after the first. The Lady Trojans then shot 16 free throws in the second period making nine and got to within eight with the score 32-25. Orangefield's Nichole Judice, who had seven points and six rebounds off the bench, sank a free throw making the lead nine at 33-25. Then Lady Trojans' Breyona Harrison made two freebies making it 33-27. Sanders made the halftime score 34-27 by closing out the half's scoring with a free throw. Orangefield then turned up the intensity after the break and never looked back with a 12-0 run to start the third. Little poured in eight during the run, two from three-point land, and Jessica Shores and Laura Riddick each buried shots. Shores finished with five points, six assists and three steals in the game while Riddick pulled down five rebounds and had four steals to go with her three points. The Lady Bobcats were a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line in the third as they out-scored the Lady Trojans 22-5 in the frame. Orangefield's defense was one key to the success as it forced nine turnovers. With a 56-32 lead heading into the fourth, Orangefield looked to coast but things turned ugly with flagrant and technical fouls from Coldspring players. During all the chaos, not one Lady Bobcat fought back and received a technical foul for reacting to any play. "Those physical teams seem to foul a little harder at the end of games if they are not winning," Ancelot said. "So we anticipate that and remind the kids the game will get enough rougher down the stretch. We have kids tonight who showed their maturity." The Lady Bobcats remained calm enough to sink 12-of-16 free throws in the fourth to not give up the lead it worked to get in the third. Orangefield out-scored Coldspring 24-16 in the fourth. The Lady Trojans were led by Chelsea King's 14 points and eight rebounds while Brittany Washington added 11 points and eight rebounds. Harrison finished with 10 points of her own for the Lady Trojans. Coldspring turned the ball over 40 times in the game while Orangefield did the same 35 times. Kayla Stone added four steals for the Lady Bobcats. Orangefield now turns its attention to undefeated West Columbia. "They are undefeated at 29-0 for a reason," Ancelot said. "Our schedule has prepared us for that kind of team. We had a tough non-district and district schedule. We are going to go in knowing we deserve to be there just like they do." -

Lady Mustangs torture Liberty Van Wade The Orange Leader EVADALE — If it would've been a prizefight between the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs and Liberty Lady Panthers Friday night in the Class 3A bid strict round of the playoffs, the bout would've been called off in the second round. No, make that the second quarter. After leading just 10-5 at the end of the first period, the Lady Mustangs opened the second period with the first eight points and they never looked back as they spanked the Lady Panthers 57-22 at Rebel Gym. Senior WO-S point guard Brittney Scott fired in a whopping 31 points and the Lady Mustangs' stifling defense limited the Lady Panthers to just eight field goals. “Our offense started out a little sluggish so we rode our defense to create some easier scoring opportunities,†said Lady Mustang head coach Callie Orebo. “We played great defense all night. It just didn’t come from our starters either, the entire team played well. The kids off the bench really gave us a spark.†Kia Hartfield pumped in 13 points and the gifted outside shooter buried three three-pointers in the second-quarter outburst to enable the Lady Mustangs (21-8), the third-place team out of District 21-3A, to cruise past the 22-3A runnerup Lady Panthers (14-13). “Kia, once she gets rolling, it’s hard to keep her down,†said Orebo. “She had a few good looks in the first quarter that didn’t fall but came so close. She got into a rhythm there in the second quarter and that led to a big run. Those three three-pointers kinda broke Liberty’s back.†The Lady Mustangs will have a much taller task come Friday night when they take on the Navasota Lady Rattlers at 7:30 p.m. at Humble Atascocita High school in the area round. Liberty was simply no match for WO-S from the very beginning. The Lady Rattlers, District 23-3A champions, are ranked No. 5 in the latest Class 3A state poll. “We’re going to have to be on the top of our game in all areas when we face Navasota,†said Orebo. “Like us, they play in a tough district and they’ve won a lot of big games. You can’t afford many mistakes against that group.†Despite struggling from the field, WO-S built up a 10-5 cushion heading to the second period. Things unraveled quickly for Liberty in the second period and a three-point bomb unleashed by Hartfield quickly upped the score to 18-6. The Lady Mustangs, used a suffocating full-court press in the second half to subdue the Lady Panthers. WO-S forced Liberty into 31 turnovers on the night and held a commanding 46-34 rebounding advantage. The Lady Mustangs went into intermission with a 26-12 lead and poured it own with a 22-5 spurt in the third period. Scott scored 16 points in the third, burying two three-pointers in the process. “Brittney was upset with her play in the first half and she wanted to come out and prove a point in that third quarter,†said Orebo. “And, she certainly did that.†Post Janae Hendreson added nine points and nine boards for the Lady Mustangs. Dominique Riggs and Rebecca McMillon, two starters that played excellent on the defensive end, each collected nine rebounds. The Lady Mustangs received solid bench production from the likes of Kristin LeBouef (six rebounds), Carmyn Adams, Cayla Adams and Georqual Tolliver. Forward Sherry Nelson led the Lady Panthers with eight points. Michelle Braxton had five points and five rebounds. Alicia Mallett led Liberty with nine boards while Sharday Freeman collected six. The Lady Mustangs finished with just 12 turnovers, with just three coming in the first half. WO-S finished 9-of-17 from the free-throw line while Liberty went a dismal 5-of-16. -
