  1. Late rally pulls Cardinals past Cal State-Northridge EDINBURG - Lamar University scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for a come-from-behind 6-4 win over Cal. State-Northridge Sunday afternoon in Edinburg Stadium on the final day of the Citrus Tournament. Advertisement Lamar, after dropping games to No. 22-ranked Oklahoma State (5-2) and Illinois-Chicago (9-8), improved to 1-2 on the season. Cal. State-Northridge dropped to 6-3 overall and went 2-1 in the Citrus Tournament, posting wins over McNeese State (4-3) and host Texas-Pan American (5-3). The 1-2 Cardinals return home to host Holy Cross in a three-game series beginning with Saturday's 1 p.m. doubleheader in Vincent-Beck Stadium. The Cardinals and Crusaders will close the series Sunday at 10 a.m. The early start time is to accommodate Holy Cross' travel plans back home to Massachusetts. The Holy Cross series also starts a stretch in which Lamar will play 19 of 20 games at home. Trailing 4-2, the Cardinals started their rally with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Erik Kanaby, who was 3-for-5, singled with two outs. Ryan Baker followed with an RBI double to right field to pull the Cardinals within one, 4-3. Michael Ambort, who was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a single to left field. After Dan Hernandez flied out, Jeff Vickers walked. Following David Moore's flyout, Brian Lloyd doubled to right field to drive in both Ambort and Vickers. Travis Dunson reached on an error by shortstop Jason Dabbs, which allowed Lloyd to score and give Lamar the lead at 6-4. Brad Depoy (1-0) pitched the final two innings to pick up his first career win at Lamar. He didn't allow a run or hit and struck out two, both coming in the top of the ninth inning. Brian Sisk started for the Cardinals, allowing one unearned run on four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in six innings. Lamar started the scoring with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Ambort singled to lead off the fourth and stole second. Vickers, who was 2-for-2, doubled to right field to drive in Ambort with the game's first run. Dunson led off the fifth inning with a single to right field and stole second base. He moved to third on Kanaby's groundout to first base. Baker drove in Dunson with a sacrifice fly to left field to put Lamar up 2-0. The Matadors cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the sixth inning. Todd Shelton led off the inning with a bunt single and advanced to second on Alex Bardeguez' single to left. Sisk got Amiel Traynum to ground into a double play. But, Kris Kasarjian reached on a fielding error by Baker at second base, which allowed Shelton to score. Cal. State-Northridge scored three times in the top of the seventh inning to take a 4-2 lead. Richard Cates led off the inning with a pinch-hit single off reliefer Scott Meyer. C.J. Belanger, who was 3-for-4, followed with a single to right field, and Dabbs loaded the bases with a bunt single. Cates scored on a wild pitch by Meyer to tie the score at 2-2. Bardeguez was hit by a pitch from Justin Walker, Lamar's third pitcher of the game, to reload the bases. Traynum reached on a fielding error by Lloyd at shortstop, which allowed Belanger to score. Dabbs scored on a double steal attempt, crossing the plate before Bardeguez was thrown out at third base. Edwin Quirarte started for the Matadors, allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk in five innings. Mark Haderlein (0-1) took the loss in relief, allowing one run on no hits with one walk in one-third of an inning. Lamar pounded out 11 hits, compared to seven by CSUN, including netting three doubles. The Cardinals' pitching staff recorded 10 strikeouts, and both teams committed three errors. Kanaby, Vickers, Lloyd and Moore have all hit safely in the first three games for the Cardinals, and Kanaby has an eight-game hitting streak dating back to last season.

  3. Memorial girls basketball back in playoffs Joseph Fonteneaux always believed his team had what it took to make the playoffs. His prediction turned out to be true. Advertisement After a three-year drought, the Memorial girls basketball team finally did what it had been threatening to do for quite some time. Memorial plays North Shore at 7 p.m. today in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs at Barbers Hill High School. "It feels good to be back in the playoffs," said Fonteneaux. "I always felt we had a good enough team when we didn't make it, so it feels great to finally be here. The girls have practiced and played hard for this opportunity, and they don't want to blow it." Memorial (20-14) and Kingwood (18-14) finished the District 21-5A season tied for second place at 11-3. Humble (21-10) was the district champions with a 13-1 record. "I think going 10-3 in this district is an accomplishment," Fonteneaux said. "This is the first time in school history we have even won 10 district games in Class 5A. We have definitely accomplished a lot this season." Memorial is coming off of a 47-43 overtime loss to Kingwood Friday night. It was a district playoff game to determine the No. 2 and 3 playoffs seeds. The Titans outscored Kingwood 17-11 in the fourth quarter to force overtime, but the Mustangs went on a 6-2 run in the extra period to win the game. Treasure Eddie was the leading scorer for the Titans with 17 points. Amber Kinlaw, who hit four 3-pointers in the second half, ended the night with 12 points. "It was a tough game," Fonteneaux said. "We played Kingwood three times before, so we know each other like the back of our hands." It was the fourth time the schools played this season. The Titans entered Friday's contest having beaten Kingwood two out of three games this season. The Titans, who beat Kingwood in a tournament game earlier this season, won 62-60 in the first district meeting, while the Mustangs won 36-27 in the second district meeting. "We wanted to get the No. 2 playoff spot, but we will have to settle for the third seed," Fonteneaux said. "We still finished in second place in district, and we made it to the playoffs so that's all that matters." Fonteneaux will look to Eddie, Amber Kinlaw and Brittany Kinlaw to help lead the Titans to the second round of the playoffs. Eddie, a senior guard, is the team's offensive perimeter shooter. Senior forward Brittany Kinlaw controls the inside, while junior guard Amber Kinlaw has stepped up offensively and become a major threat. "Britany's presence inside means the other players get shots they wouldn't get when she's not in the game," Fonteneaux said. "We look to Treasure to score because she is our best shooter. "Amber Kinlaw has also really stepped up for us offensively. Everybody else feeds off of these players. I think as a whole we have the team to go far in the playoffs."

  8. Jr. starting 2007 slow ....... DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A rookie who had trouble finding the tunnel into Daytona International Speedway last month and a 50-year-old who came out of retirement took the front row for an organization that was left for dead a year ago. Ricky Rudd, left, and David Gilliland teamed up to put Robert Yates Racing on the front row for the 49th Daytona 500. A Colombian driver who made his fame in Formula One was fourth fastest and a 72-year-old trying to make history was 58th out of 61. NASCAR's most popular driver was a candidate for NASCAR's unhappiest driver and Toyota's new slogan "Lead the Way" was anything but appropriate, with no Camry faster than 14th. Two drivers had their qualifying laps disallowed and their crew chiefs could be suspended. Welcome to qualifying for the Daytona 500. All we know for sure is David Gilliland and Ricky Rudd of Robert Yates Racing will start 1-2 next Sunday and that four other drivers outside of the top 35 in points from 2006 are guaranteed a spot in the 43-car field based on speed or through a past champion's provisional. The rest of the field will be determined in Thursday's two 150-mile qualifying races. That means even a long shot such as James Hylton, vying to become the oldest driver to make a Nextel Cup event, still has a shot. "Didn't hit nothing," Hylton said after climbing out of his car. "It felt great." Juan Pablo Montoya also felt good, posting the fourth-best lap in his second Cup race since leaving F1. Boris Said, Sterling Marlin and Johnny Sauter felt good because they are guaranteed a spot in the 500 based on speed if they don't gain a spot based on their finish in the 150s. Dale Earnhardt Jr. didn't feel good, leaving in somewhat of a huff after posting the 22nd-fastest lap. Two-time champion Michael Waltrip, who had the intake manifold of his No. 55 Toyota confiscated before qualifying and his car impounded afterward, also left in a hurry after posting the 24th-best lap. Crew chiefs Kenny Francis (Kasey Kahne) and Robbie Reiser (Matt Kenseth) weren't happy after their qualifying speeds were disallowed because of unapproved devices that could get them ejected from the 500 as Chad Knaus (Jimmie Johnson) was a year ago. Dale Jarrett wasn't happy with his lap that was 50th, but at least he's guaranteed a spot in the 500 as a past champion if he doesn't earn a spot on Thursday. Come on Jr. Nail one of those 150-mile qualifiers Thursday. Get close enough to the front to "run for the roses" ... so to speak.
