McDonald a 'go-getter' for Mustangs Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — A go-getter. That’s how West Orange-Stark basketball coach Doug McCarter describes 6-4 junior forward Jim McDonald. McDonald has been a pleasant surprise in his first year at the varsity level. He gained valuable experience at the beginning of the season and as the campaign heads down the backstretch, he’s been inserted in the starting lineup as the Mustangs (18-11, 8-4) need two wins — at home against Hamshire-Fannett tonight and on the road at Kirbyville Tuesday — to snag a postseason spot. “Jim has just been wonderful to coach all season long,†said McCarter. “He comes out here and works hard every single day, whether he’s on the court or in the classroom. He’s not a ‘me’ type of kid, he’s a ‘we’ kid and that’s the type of kid anyone would love to coach.†McDonald received some great early minutes when the season started, which made a big difference in his play. “With some guys still playing football, I knew I was going to be able to get some playing time early on,†McDonald said. “The experience helped so much. The competition is a lot tougher at the varsity level, I found that out pretty quick.†McDonald’s play as the sixth man for most of the season has usually given the Mustangs a big boost. His long, lanky arms makes him invaluable on the defensive end and his work on the boards has been top-notch. “When Jim is in, he crashes the boards relentlessly,†said McCarter. “He handles his own inside against other big guys too. He blocks out really well and he’s getting stronger and stronger as far as the fundamentals of the game is concerned.†McDonald has a pretty nice touch inside as far as his shot goes but with scorers like seniors Richard Netherly, Buddy Broussard, and Earl Thomas and junior Ronnie Dennis doing the bulk of the scoring, Jim likes his role. “I like to get in a game and do whatever it takes to help our team win,†said McDonald. “Coach McCarter likes the way I go to the boards then that’s what I’m going to do. Coach McCarter is such a great coach and knows the game so well. He doesn’t just prepare us for basketball, he really likes to prepare us for life.†As far as being in the starting role again? “Starting is not that big of a deal for me,†explained McDonald. “It does make me feel good that Coach McCarter and my teammates can depend on me to play and do a good job. I think I have a knack of getting rebounds and I feel my defense is pretty good. Going into next season, I really want to improve my offensive game.†“Jim realizes there’s a lot more skills that he can develop as far as the game goes,†said McCarter. “He’s kinda learned under fire this season and has performed well. The best thing about him is that you know he’s going to give it his all to get better and we expect even bigger things from him next year.†Two more wins or a Jasper (11-13, 7-5) loss would give the Mustangs yet another playoff berth under McCarter, who guided the Mustangs to the Class 3A State Semifinals last season. “We’ve had a strange season, to say the least, this year,†said McCarter. “Two more wins and we assure ourselves a playoff spot. Where we go from there, it’s up to the kids. What I want to see in these last two games is all-out hustle. You want to be playing good going into the playoffs and we have to play better than the way we’ve played the last four or five games if we want to be successful.â€

Ex-Pirate Cole back on courth for 'Hawks Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader PORT ARTHUR — Vidor fans remember his shooting touch and his ability to work without the basketball. Lamar State College-Port Arthur coach Don Bryson remembers the day Noah Cole gave him news he was headed back to the Seahawks. Cole, a former Vidor Pirate, first committed to the Lamar State College-Port Arthur Seahawks before getting an offer to go play basketball for Arkansas Tech. Those plans fell through when Cole broke his ankle and tore ligaments in early October during a practice. So instead of moving, Cole worked himself back into shape and gave Bryson a call. “When he first decided to leave he had the opportunity to better his career and we were happy for him,†Bryson said. “We are more than pleased to have him back. He has done a great job for us.†Cole scored 21 points Saturday in an 84-82 overtime loss to the Northwestern Louisiana State University junior varsity. On Wednesday, Cole scored 27 in an 89-86 loss to Mountain View College, a team the Seahawks defeated 78-76 in overtime on Jan. 13 in Port Arthur. Cole is averaging 9.1 points per game this season to go with 1.6 rebounds. He is shooting 48 percent from the field, 36 percent from three-point land and 82 percent from the free throw line. “There was so much damage done when I broke my ankle,†Cole said. “It is great getting back into shape and being back out on the court. They said it would take six to eight months to heal but I worked hard to cut that time down. It was around Christmas time when they cleared me to get back on the court.†Bryson said he has leaned on Cole a lot this season and has asked him to do more than most shooting guards expect. “He has to do more than most shooters like to do,†Bryson said. “He has to bring the ball up a lot for us and is just now starting to get himself good shots. He knows shooting percentage goes with taking good shots. He has become real smart with what shots he takes.†Bryson said he and Cole did not talk much right after the shooter decided to move on to Arkansas State. “He came to us after the injury,†Bryson said. “I didn’t see him after the injury other than to wish him luck. He had to work hard on his own and he did whatever it took to play again.†This is not the first time an injury has struck the former Pirate. In high school Cole tore his anterior cruciate ligament when playing for Vidor. “I knew if I could come back from tearing my ACL then I could come back from this injury,†Cole said. “It takes hard work. The coaches here really care about us on the court and also want us to succeed as people. That is why they push us. “When I told them I was headed to Arkansas they were proud for me. Then they took me right back. Coach Bryson is a great guy.†While Cole is starting to heat up in the scoring department, he is still trying to adjust to a few aspects of the college game. “The speed at this level is very different,†Cole explained. “There are a lot of big guys in each game and everyone is as quick as they come. It is good to know I still had a place to play.†The Seahawks are 4-18 overall and 2-5 in Metro Atlantic Conference play. LSC-PA returns home at 2 p.m. Saturday to play Richland College in the Carl Park Center.

Mosley value may surprise grid experts The Port Arthur News NEDERLAND -- Before football experts dismiss the likelihood that Nederland can produce a worthwhile Division 1 running back, fans should read on. Micah Mosley should have more than a decent chance to make a good splash at the University of North Texas, especially because the chemistry would appear most favorable between Mosley and new UNT head coach Todd Dodge. Fresh from his remarkable run at Southlake Carroll, the brand-new college head coach Dodge has completed a truly special stretch of recruiting over the past six weeks. Mosley is far from the only interesting character in Dodge's cast at Denton. Another most appealing standout is Lufkin linebacker A.J. Penson (6-1, 215), who picked North Texas over a number of Division 1 schools. But the area interest obviously centers around Mosley's shot to blend into Dodge's fast-break spread tactics. Dodge would not bet against Micah. "He's a great fit for what we do because of his versatility," Dodge said. "We want our running back to be a really good player... one who jumps out at you on video. When you see a guy outrun La Marque's secondary like he did, that jumps out at you." "Micah is a tough kid with a lot of character. The highest compliment I can give him is he reminds me so much of one of our former running backs, Aaron Luna. Aaron started on three state championship teams for us. He wound up going to Rice and playing baseball. Micah is larger than Aaron but their styles are similar." Mosley very openly has acknowledged Dodge's arrival completely changed his approach toward attending North Texas. "Without him there, I don't know what my interest in North Texas would be," said Mosley, Nederland's new single-season and career rushing-record holder. Nederland coach Larry Neumann definitely believed "this thing has worked out for the best for Micah." "I think Micah has gotten more and more comfortable and excited about going there," Neumann said. "In every profession, there are people with those special qualities. Todd hasn't had much time to do a lot of recruiting but he's had the name and the notoriety. With Todd and the expectations he brings because of the notoriety he has, it explains why he would attract talented recruits."

Lamar basketball team takes the stage in Arlington ARLINGTON - At 1:10 p.m. on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon outside the Montagne Center, the largest athlete at Lamar University climbed back aboard. James Davis, decked out in LU gear from head to toe, strode toward the men's basketball team bus, a cell phone stuck to his right ear and large grin covering his face. Reunited with the Cardinals for the first time since Jan. 31, Davis offered up a hug and a handshake to Bill Nunn, the team's longtime driver. Then he stepped into the bus and headed for Arlington, ready to ride again. The Stage awaited. With Davis in tow, the Cardinals left town with hopes of reversing their fortunes in the Southland Conference. Lamar (9-13, 3-5) was scheduled to practice Wednesday night in Texas Hall - otherwise known as "The Stage" - in preparation for their game against Texas-Arlington (8-14, 3-6) at 7 p.m. today. In leaving Beaumont early, the Cardinals wanted to get acclimated to one of the most unique courts in the nation, with theatre-style seating on one side of the floor, a giant curtain behind one goal and a wall behind the other. The LU players, for that matter, had to get re-acquainted with their old and new teammate - Davis, who averaged 16.7 points and 8.0 rebounds per game before he was "suspended indefinitely" by first-year head coach Steve Roccaforte on Jan. 31. His return couldn't hurt matters, could it? "Well, you have to laugh at it a little bit - of all the games when James Davis is going to come back, why does he have to pick this one to come back?" UTA coach Scott Cross said with a laugh. "But if I was his coach, I would want him back. He's a great player, and I'm happy for coach Roc. I just hope I can still beat him." Without Davis, Lamar was, at its best, a hot-shooting team with attitude and hustle. At their worst, the Cardinals were the same team they've been since Southland Conference play began: in other words, hauntingly inconsistent. Lamar went 1-1 in its last two games, shooting lights-out to defeat Nicholls State 89-82 last Thursday, then shooting woefully in a 73-64 loss at Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday. Effort was rarely a problem in either game. Power forward Lamar Sanders, a team captain, scored 13 points and pulled down 16 rebounds in 33 minutes against the Lions. Instead, two old problems - missed shots and turnovers - cropped up again Saturday at SLU. The Cards had just nine assists to 16 turnovers, and they shot 33 percent from the floor. For the season, Lamar ranks last in the SLC in turnover margin (minus 2.7 per game) and seventh in field goal percentage (.415) - numbers that help explain why the Cardinals, who seemed destined for a strong season just before Christmas, have lost five of their last seven games since the SLC opener Jan. 6 at Texas-San Antonio. Meanwhile, UTA, which had a gruesome start to SLC play (the Mavericks went 1-5 in their first six conference games), appears to have warmed warm up recently. While Lamar lost at Southeastern Louisiana, UTA outgunned Texas State 110-103 in a shootout in San Marcos, winning for the third time in four games. Sophomore guard Brandon Long had a career-high 26 points to lead six players in double figures. "I don't know if we'll win a lot of games like that - or even play in a lot of games like that," Cross said. "But when you have six guys in double figures, it certainly builds their confidence. ... And that's good, because in this conference, with the teams as close as they are, you need to have confidence and you need to play hard every night." The Mavericks' win came just 10 days after they ambushed Sam Houston State 78-65 in Texas Hall. Yes, that's the same Sam Houston State team which hammered Lamar on Jan. 15, 88-52. One more thing: The Cardinals are 1-9 on the road this season. "It's kind of tough right now for us, because we've lost some games," reserve forward Lawrence Nwevo said Tuesday. "But it's not yet over. We can still make it to the tournaments. (We have to) keep working harder and harder every day. We have the talent and the good coaches. So let's do it." Davis could help - although, given his time off and recent return, it's uncertain how much he'll play today. In a players-only meeting Tuesday afternoon, Davis was reportedly asked to take things a bit more seriously this time around; although teammates and coaches have never publicly criticized the 7-foot-1, 335-pound center, fans grew impatient with a young man who was once thought to be a potential NBA draft pick. "I'm real comfortable with those 10 (players), and I trust them," Roccaforte said. "If they wouldn't have been OK with (Davis' return), there would have been no way to do it." With that in mind, it seems almost everyone in red and white seems to understand one thing: Davis needs Lamar, and Lamar needs Davis. The Cardinals owned a .200 winning percentage in five games without Davis, who missed two games in early December and sat out their loss at McNeese State last month. Lamar has posted an 8-9 record with Davis in the lineup. "Don't forget it: It's all about winning and losing," Roccaforte said. "I know that."

LC-M's Brooks returns after brain surgery Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — Since the end of January, two things have been missing from the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears’ soccer program. Wins and losses started to not matter as much as the absence of a player and a whole lot of hair. On Jan. 31, LC-M soccer player Jordan Brooks went under the knife at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston for 12 hours to remove tumors on his skull. Wednesday was Brooks’ first day out to the practice field to see his fellow teammates who recently showed their support the best way they knew how. LC-M Coach Matt Wedel explained Brooks was worried about returning to school with no hair and a scar from the surgery. To try and lessen the worry, Wedel showed up in Houston to visit Brooks with a freshly-shaven head and many of the Bears followed right behind their coach. “That was really nice of them to do that,†Brooks said. “I was down because of the surgery and to have them shave their heads lifted my spirits. It helped me heal faster knowing they had done that for me.†Wedel said the Bears were already a close-knit group and now have an even bigger reason to come together. “This team is very close to each other and Jordan’s surgery just solidified it even more,†Wedel said. “Even though he is on junior varsity, most of the varsity players shaved their heads as well. We are all one big family here. The kids started the idea and it just went from there.†Brooks’ mother Robin Wiegand explained her son had a nasel tumor taken out in Oct. 2006. The tumor re-emerged on Jan. 23 and moved into Brooks’ brain. It will take three months for Brooks to heal. Wedel said his phone did not stop ringing the day of and after Brooks’ surgery. “It kept ringing with players and other coaches wanting to know how Jordan was,†Wedel said. “It was very hectic. My wife and I went and saw him the day after the surgery and when he saw my head was shaved he got a little emotional.†Wiegant has been nothing but pleased with Brooks’ progress since the surgery. “He has done amazingly well,†Wiegand said. “He has never complained and has never fussed.†Wiegand explained Brooks is set to return to school on Monday with certain conditions set in place. “He will have to be extremely careful,†Wiegand said. “He will leave class early to make sure he doesn’t get bumped in the hall.†None of that matters to Brooks who was excited just to be out on the practice with the rest of the Bears. “It feels real good to be back out here with my friends and the players,†Brooks said. “Even though I can’t play soccer, the team will be a big part of my life. I will always continue to be a Bear soccer player. Now though, you can tell how ugly all our heads are.â€
