  3. For Mosley, next level is at North Texas By CHRIS DABE, The Enterprise NEDERLAND - First came an invite, then an offer. North Texas football coach Todd Dodge invited Nederland running back Micah Mosley to the Denton-based campus shortly after watching a 19-minute highlight tape of the record-setting senior. Dodge followed the next day by offering Mosley a scholarship to play football at North Texas without ever setting eyes on the only running back to be in Dodge's first high school recruiting class. Just like that, Mosley went from thinking he might never play football again to being among the first players to join a team coached by one of the most innovative figures in Texas high school football history. "It happened pretty fast," said Mosley's father, James, who will join his wife Phyllis as they watch their son sign a letter of intent today to play football at North Texas. Today is national signing day for college football, meaning thousands of high school seniors nationwide will fax signed letters to their college coaches, officially making them members of a recruiting class. Advertisement Although slowed for part of the season with an ankle injury, Micah Mosley rushed for more than 2,400 yards and 29 touchdowns in 12 games last season. Even so, no school offered the 6-foot-1, 200-pound senior a chance to join a college team as a running back. "I would have thought that many more than (North Texas) would have offered him a scholarship," Nederland coach Larry Neumann said. James Mosley said most schools that expressed interest in his son only wanted him as a defensive back. Among them were Southern Methodist, Tulsa and Navy. Micah Mosley was only interested in playing in NCAA Division I-A football if he could be an offensive player, meaning he had no interest in attending those other schools. Houston said Mosley would have a chance to play running back but never made a scholarship offer, James said. Instead, Mosley made none of the five official visits allotted to each recruit by the NCAA and began thinking about a baseball career. A first-team all-district outfielder last season and left-handed pitcher, Mosley trained with former Nederland star pitcher Brian Sanches, who pitched in 18 games with the Philadelphia Phillies last season. But then along came Dodge, who left Southlake Carroll after winning four Class 5A state championships in five seasons and going 79-1 along the way. Dodge was raised in Port Arthur and played for Memorial coach Ronnie Thompson when both were at Thomas Jefferson. Dodge is the first quarterback in Texas history to throw for 3,000 yards, achieved in the season he led TJ to a 1980 state final appearance against Odessa Permian. He played at the University of Texas. Dodge brings with him to North Texas a spread option offense that has been arguably the most effective in state history. His quarterbacks in each of the last five years have been selected as the Class 5A player of the year by The Associated Press, the latest being his son, Riley, who will be a senior next season. North Texas went 2-5 in the Sun Belt Conference and 3-9 overall last season. The team returns leading rusher Jamario Thomas, who rushed for 668 yards and two touchdowns. James Mosley said Dodge told him he liked Micah Mosley's highlight film enough to make him the only running back in a recruiting class that Rivals.com says has 14 players. Another running back, Cam Montgomery, is a junior college transfer from Booneville, Miss. The highlight film was mailed to Dodge Jan. 5. He viewed it Jan. 10 after he returned home from a national coaching convention and invited Mosley to visit the school. By Jan. 11, about a week before the scheduled visit, Dodge offered Mosley a scholarship. NCAA rules prohibit Dodge from talking about Mosley until he is officially signed. "I'm happy with what I have, and if I wasn't, I wouldn't further my career in football," Mosley said before Nederland's first baseball scrimmage Tuesday. Mosley said he watched film on Southlake Carroll and liked what he saw. "I'm going to get a chance to run the ball and catch the ball and to pass block," Mosley said. "It's a very spread out offense. Everybody is going to receive the ball." New positions
  4. Lady Bobcats take down H-J Van Wade The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — They let Hardin-Jefferson stay in the game in the first half but the Orangefield Lady Bobcats sure didn’t let the Lady Hawks off the hook after intermission. Breaking away from a 25-25 tie at the half, the 12th-ranked Lady Bobcats showed little mercy in the second half, holding H-J to just one field goal as Orangefield closed out its regular season with a 49-32 District 21-3A victory at Bobcat Gym Tuesday night. Orangefield (25-7, 12-2), runnerups out of 21-3A, scored the first 10 points of the third period, spearheaded by senior Jessica Shores. Shores, who finished with 10 points, buried a three-point bomb to open the third period and then scored on a smooth move in the paint to push the Lady Bobcats ahead 30-25. Kaylin Little ensued with a three-point missile of her own and Nichole Judice bulled her way inside for two more points as Orangefield took control at 35-25 with 2:17 left in the half. “We found our groove to start the second half,†said Lady Bobcat head coach Sondra Ancelot. “Jess (Shores) came out and drilled a couple big ones for us and that helped set the tone after that.†Whitney Sutherland gave H-J (20-15, 7-7) its only field goal of the half when she scored inside with 1:50 remaining in the third period. The Lady Bobcats outpointed H-J 10-3 in the third quarter and finished with a 14-4 spurt in the fourth on Senior Night. Orangefield forced the Lady Hawks into 24 turnovers and its defense proved to be the difference in the second half. “The first half was kinda crazy and rough,†said Ancelot. “I thought the kids handled themselves very well in the second half. Our offense was kinda sputtering most of the game but our defense was pretty much solid throughout and we stayed aggressive.†The Lady Bobcats will take on either Tarkington or Coldspring in the bidistrict round of the Class 3A Region III playoffs next week. Orangefield advanced to the Region III semifinals last season where they fell to eventual 3A state champion China Springs. Seven seniors closed out what has been a tremendous home run in a Lady Bobcat uniform in Shores, Kayla Stone, Kristy Sanders, Paige Roy, Alyssa DeRamus, Meaghan Granger and Nichole Judice. “This is such a special group of kids and it’s been such a pleasure coaching them,†said Ancelot. “I think they know that they can be even more special when the playoffs start up. They feel like there is still plenty of unfinished business.†Sanders led a balanced Orangefield attack with 12 points. Laura Riddick powered her way to eight points and seven rebounds in the first half. Little canned two three-pointers while Judice contributed six rebounds. Katelyn Bernsen paced the Lady Hawks with 10 points and added five rebounds. Jennifer Breeden poured in nine points and snagged five boards. Latricia Moore added seven points and five boards while Sutherland grabbed six rebounds. The first quarter was the most “offensive†with Orangefield managing a 15-14 lead at the end of the period. Riddick led the way with six quick points for the Lady Bobcats while Breeden poured in six for H-J. H-J forced Orangefield into six of its 15 turnovers in the second period and Bernsen went 4-of-5 from the charity stripe and Breeden buried a three-pointer to enable the Lady Hawks to pull even at the half. Orangefield finished with a 26-25 rebounding edge. H-J went 11-of-21 from the free-throw line while the Lady Bobcats went just 9-of-17.

  6. Port Neches-Groves boys 2, Little Cypress-Mauriceville 0 PORT NECHES -- Once this 20-4A district race started, Indians' chief Don Sandell switched Eric Parks to sweeper. That's made a huge difference for the Port Neches-Groves boys soccer team. A senior who dabbled at forward and midfield, Eric has found his natural position. Naturally, PN-G has benefitted. The Tribe limited Little Cypress-Mauriceville to eight shots and downed the Bears 2-0 on Tuesday at The Reservation. PN-G (6-2-2 and 5-1) stayed in title contention by getting six saves from keeper Steven Baque and the Indians have blanked four straight league opponents with Parks as their sweeper. "He's really turned our defense around," Sandell said. "The defense has started to put together a nice run." Matt Morrell knocked home a header from the six-yard box after taking a cross from Sean LeBlanc about 25 minutes into the game. The goal stood for a 1-0 halftime edge. Matt Parks notched the insurance goal midway into the second half, capitalizing on a well-placed thru ball by Evan Johnson. PN-G led in shots, 12-8, as LC-M dropped to 3-7 and 2-4.
  7. Last-second shot earns Titans' tie HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER The Port Arthur News For Brian Morgan's first home game as Memorial's soccer coach, the Titans cooked up the closest shave in Golden Triangle soccer history. Memorial junior Ruben Diaz centered a corner kick just perfectly with two seconds to play and sophomore Saul Carrillo fired home a spine-tingling buzzer-beater goal which enabled the Titans to tie Atascocita, 3-3, in Tuesday night's memorable 21-5A affair at the PAISD auxiliary field. "It was quite a rush," said the 24-year-old Morgan, a first-year head coach. "Everybody was scrambling off." Memorial (0-2-1 and 0-1-1) scored the game's first goals and owned a 2-0 halftime lead. Atascocita (2-5-1 and 0-1-1) managed three second-half goals and commanded the lead for the first time with about two minutes to play. Morgan received solid work from goalkeeper Rey Marin and center fullback Omar Zepeda. "We've been scoring some goals and being competitive but this was quite a finish," the Titans coach said. Marcos Avilas took a crossing pass from Salvador Cardenas to score in the opening minutes. Oscar Pulido's crossing pass set up Carrillo who made it 2-0. Memorial will visit 5A powerhouse Kingwood on Friday night at 7 p.m.
