Nash sidelined with right shoulder inflammation PHOENIX -- All-Star point guard Steve Nash will sit out the Phoenix Suns' game at Portland Tuesday night because of inflammation in his right shoulder, the team said. The NBA's two-time defending MVP didn't play in the second half of the Suns' 113-108 victory in Denver on Monday night. That didn't stop him from delivering a blistering lecture to his teammates after a lethargic first half. The team responded with a strong second half for its 38th victory of the season. Nash said he first felt soreness in the shoulder when he got out of bed on Thursday and it has worsened daily since. After Tuesday's game, the Suns don't play again until Friday, when they are home against Atlanta. Nash is averaging career highs of 19.3 points and an NBA-leading 11.8 assists per game. Cruiserweight champ Bell arrested on assault charge BIG BEAR CITY, Calif. -- World cruiserweight champion O'Neil Bell was arrested over the weekend after a sparring partner claimed he heaved a hatchet at him during a training run through the woods, authorities said. Bell, 32, was booked Sunday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, according to a statement by the San Bernardino County sheriff's department. A telephone listing for Bell was disconnected. He did not immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment. Deputies responding to a possible fight off Highway 38 found Bell's sparring partner, 37-year-old Larry Slayton, afraid for his life with cuts from running through the brush, sheriff's spokeswoman Arden Wiltshire said Monday. Slayton told the deputies Bell had become angry with him during a training session in the woods and threw a hatchet the boxer was carrying for protection against bears. Slayton fled, dodging large rocks Bell threw at him, Wiltshire said. Bell posted $50,000 bail. Wiltshire did not know whether an arraignment date had been scheduled or if Bell had retained a lawyer. Bell (26-1-1) was in Big Bear training for a March 17 rematch title fight with Jean-Marc Mormeck in Paris. Bell defeated Mormeck in January 2006, making him the first undisputed champ in that weight class since Evander Holyfield in 1988. The Jamaican has since lost his IBF title through inactivity. Big Bear, a popular spot for fighters to train, is located about 90 miles east of downtown Los Angeles in the San Bernardino Mountains. Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press

Lady Pirates reach playoffs Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader EVADALE — For the first time since the 2001-02 season, the Deweyville Lady Pirates are on to the basketball playoffs. It took a punch in the face and a tenacious defense to get there Monday night in a one-game play-in against East Chambers. Deweyville slipped past East Chambers 32-29 Monday at Evadale High School behind Krista Goleman’s 10 points and three steals. Senior Tera Gibson, who was punched in the face in the first period, had a solid outing with nine points, 11 rebounds and four steals while Theresa Brown put in nine points. Amanda Vincent pulled down 11 boards of her own in the victory. “I am extremely proud of this group of girls,†Deweyville coach Kristi Henderson said. “I have never had a group of girls in any sport work as hard.†The Lady Pirates (14-13, 8-5) will find out their bi-district opponent Tuesday night when the playoff teams from District 23-2A are decided. There is currently a four-way tie in the district. Deweyville jumped out to a 9-5 lead after the first period Monday and then took a 18-10 advantage into half-time. East Chambers then climbed right back into the game by outscoring Deweyville 11-5 in the third to make it 23-21 heading into the decisive fourth period. In the fourth, the Lady Pirates scored nine and held the Lady Bucs to just eight points to secure the playoff spot. Henderson’s squad once again proved defense is key in basketball. “Defense more than anything is what he worked on all year,†Henderson said. “That is the very first thing we talked about in the very first practice. Using a tough defense was the only way we would match up each game during the season. If we played a tenacious defense, we would win ballgames.†East Chambers was led by Armentor and Richard who each had five points. The Lady Bucs’ player, who was upset with Gibson’s positioning on an in-bounds play, was ejected for the intentional punch. Gibson was not out long and returned to action. “This district was physically tough,†Henderson said. “We played a pretty brutal non-district schedule and it paid off.â€

WO-S ready for new year with new coach Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — The West Orange-Stark Mustangs are preparing this baseball season for the future with one thing in mind, teamwork. First-year head coach Derrick Rivers believes team unity will go along way in deciding if his first Mustangs team has success. “The first thing we have to have is a team concept,†Rivers said on Monday. We are teaching basic teamwork and if we have that we will achieve more.†The first year on the job for Rivers means he will be learning just as much as his team. It might not always mean success, but it doesn’t have to mean complete failure either. “With a first year coach and these guys being with me for just this year, we have to maintain our composure this season,†Rivers explained. “At all times we have to keep our team unity. This is going to be a really tough district. There is Bridge City and throw in Jasper, Silsbee and Orangefield. “Being at West Orange, you know we are going to have great athletes but we still have to work. Our No. 1 goal is to be to compete night in and night out. It is all in what you learn each game.†Names WO-S fans will be familiar with are Terry Veitch, Andre Bevil, Justin Gearhart, Will Shafer, Earl and Seth Thomas and Jacoby Franks.. “Bevil did not play last year but we are certainly looking for good things out of him,†Rivers said. “Jacoby has been around baseball his whole life so that will be a plus. If you look at what we have, we should be playing a lot of small ball this season, even in a 300-foot ballpark. A lot of the fields we will be playing at are small but we still want to use a lot of fundamentals this season. “We have tons of speed but we need to turn that speed into baseball speed. Just because you run a 4.2 in the 40-yard dash does not mean you are going to steal bags.†Franks, Earl Thomas, Veitch and Michael Theriot were all honorable mention All-District selections a year ago. The Mustangs will have to deal with the losses of Nick Ayers and Eric Sparks to graduation along with Tim McClelland who manned the outfield. WO-S is set to scrimmage Beaumont Ozen tonight at Ronnie Anderson Park and gets its first crack at real action Feb. 20 when they travel to face Little Cypress-Mauriceville. After heading to Crosby, the first tournament the Mustangs participate in will be from March 1-3 at the Louisiana-Lafayette Tournament. District action opens up Mar. 6 for the Mustangs when they play host to Kirbyville. WO-S then will head to the Bridge City Tournament Mar. 8-10 before returning to district action Mar. 13 when they hit the road to take on Silsbee. “Right now we are working to lessen the gap between our worst player and our best player,†Rivers said. “We need our worst player to be right behind that best player in performance. This will always be a football school but we are starting to build some depth on the baseball team. That will help us all the way around.â€
