  5. Landmark 21-5A win for Lady Titans By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News These Lady Titans have decided they intend to write a bit of history for themselves in the humble annals of Port Arthur Memorial girls soccer. Coach Phil Mattingly's team captured its second district victory in school history and its first in four years on Friday night when Memorial defeated Channelview, 5-1, in its 21-5A league opener on the PAISD auxiliary field. Memorial improved to 6-1 and 1-0 but they had lingered through 44 consecutive 5A district games without a victory until Friday. In fact, the win over Channelview amounted to the greatest district girls soccer win in history as well as the largest margin of victory. Playing 5A soccer for the fifth winter, Memorial's one previous 5A soccer win occurred Feb. 14, 2003 at home when the Lady Titans turned back Baytown Lee, 3-1. Memorial will get a chance to make a little more history on Tuesday night when it will play at Atascocita. That's because Memorial's girls never have captured a girls district soccer road victory in school history, either. But this group of Lady Titans has seemed to enjoy rewriting history... and pleasing their veteran soccer coach. Thomas Jefferson amassed a 7-6 district soccer record in the school's final year of existence (2002). Then Memorial went 1-9 in 2003 (22-5A), 0-8-2 in 2004 (22-5A), 0-14 in 2005 (22-5A), and 0-14 in 2006 (22-5A). "A lot of these girls have been together for four years and that helps," Mattingly said. "Evelyn (Torres) has added some speed and Norma (Pulido) has benefitted from running cross country." Memorial led 3-0 at half after two goals from Torres and one from Pulido. Plus, senior goalkeeper Jessica Cuellar's efforts proved crucial with 10 saves. Memorial led in shots on goal, 22-18, but Cuellar and sweeper Cynthia Rodriguez delivered strong performances. The Lady Titans also received excellent midfield work from Vanessa Flores and Maricela Pulido. Torres and Norma Pulido scored two goals each and Veronica Gutierrez added one. Flores led the assists column with two followed by Torres and Norma Pulido with one each. Nederland girls 10, Beaumont Central 0 NEDERLAND -- Nederland never had a great deal of trouble in racking up a 10-0 win over Beaumont Central in Bulldog Stadium on Friday night. Catching up with Port Neches-Groves and moving into a two-way tie for the girls 20-4A district lead, the Lady Bulldogs of Julie Johnson improved to 7-1 overall. Ashley Bombek and Megan Melancon scored two goals apiece while six others added one each -- Taren Dupuis, Brittany Richmond, Lauren Washburn, Mary French, Taylor Havard, and Erin Binagia. The win was the fourth straight district shutout and season's fifth for goalkeeper Heather Hussey.
  6. source..Bmt Enterprise SARATOGA - This moment had been long-awaited by the West Hardin boys basketball team. Led by a feisty effort down the stretch at home, No. 13-ranked West Hardin handed No. 11 Big Sandy its first District 24-A loss of the season with a 75-68 decision in the Oilers' gymnasium on Friday. The win for the Oilers also avenges a 61-45 loss against Big Sandy earlier this season. West Hardin (24-1 overall and 9-1 in district) is now tied for first in district with the Wildcats. Although the Oilers were outscored 10-6 over the final two minutes of the contest, West Hardin held a 69-58 lead with 2:18 remaining, and the scoring differential was too much for the Wildcats to overcome. Big Sandy is now 21-7 overall and 9-1 in district. "We played hard," said West Hardin coach Kent Fuller, whose team has now won seven consecutive games. "I told the boys all week that to beat this team you've got to do all of the little things right: boxing out, making your free throws and taking care of the ball. We did all three of those and I'm really proud of them." The Oilers led by six at the end of the third quarter and jumped out to 62-51 advantage midway through the fourth period. Guard Brandon Letsinger led West Hardin with 29 points on the night, while forwards Jared Tomlinson and Tyler Copeland added 19 and 17 points each. "This win is real big because we didn't want to give up a district championship on our home floor," Fuller said. "Hopefully, we'll get to play a tie-breaker for the district championship." Big Sandy was led on the night by Anthony Williams' 16 points, while post player Geoffery McKinney scored 15, Cory Tolar scored 13 and guard Troy Langley added 12. The Wildcats received nine points from Langley during the fourth quarter, while Williams scored eight of his points during the final period to help Big Sandy hang close. West Hardin will now play host to Sabine Pass on Tuesday before finishing district play at Evadale next Friday. If the Oilers and Wildcats remain tied for first place at the end of the regular season, a tie-breaker will likely be played to determine the teams' playoff spots. "We've got two more games, and hopefully we'll finish on a strong note," Fuller said. "Right now, we're peaking at the right time. I'm glad we're going into the playoffs looking good."

  8. Coach fired for halftime pep talk Coach told players to 'check their manhood' LEEDS, Maine (AP) - A high school basketball coach was fired after telling his players at halftime to reach into their pants to "check their manhood," administrators said. Leavitt Area High School Principal Patrick Hartnett said coach Mike Remillard told the varsity boys Jan. 23 that "tonight's game was about who had the biggest (male genitalia) in town." "He then required his players to all stand up and put their hands down their pants and check their manhood," Hartnett said in the statement, which was read to school board members Thursday by Superintendent Thomas J. Hanson a day after the coach was dismissed. All but one player followed the coach's instructions, Hartnett said. The team won the game. Remillard, who was in his fourth season as varsity coach, called the pep talk "normal locker room banter from Fort Kent, Maine, to San Diego, California," but said he still should not have done it. "Was that tactic appropriate? No. And I'm paying the price for it," Remillard said
  9. Lady Mustangs swat Orangefield Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — The West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs got exactly what they needed Friday night. A win over Orangefield and a Kirbyville loss to Silsbee. First things first, the Lady Mustangs defeated rival Lady Bobcats 61-43 and then learned Silsbee won 76-71. This breaks the tie for third place with Kirbyville with one game left to go. With the WO-S win, Silsbee is also now in sole possession of first place in the District 21-3A standings. WO-S can lock up the third place spot Tuesday with a win at Bridge City. Kirbyville hosts Hamshire-Fannett, Silsbee travels to Jasper and Orangefield will celebrate senior night by welcoming Hardin-Jefferson. The Lady Mustangs (19-8, 8-5) got another sensational performance from senior guard Brittney Scott who poured in a game-high 35 points on Senior Night at Mustang Gym. While the Mustangs were hot, the Lady Bobcats (24-7, 11-2) shot 29-percent from the floor going 12-for-42. “We needed this one,†WO-S Coach Callie Orebo said. “We knew Orangefield would come out and work hard so we needed to come out and work even harder.†Down 13-8 after the first period, the Lady Mustangs opened the second on a 12-0 run to take a 20-13 advantage. Scott had two three-pointers in the run that saw Orangefield go ice cold from the field. WO-S scored 20 points in the second frame while Orangefield could only muster up four free throws. “Bottom line is that West Orange played a good ball game,†Orangefield Coach Sondra Ancelot said. “I will not take anything away from them but our kids did not seem to be very focused. If you look at playing in halves, right now we have played one good half of basketball in the last four. Heading into the playoffs, that is unacceptable.†Ancelot was referring to Tuesday night’s 71-45 win over Hamshire-Fannett. The Lady Bobcats were only up 30-29 after the first half. After the break, the Lady Bobcats clawed their way back to within seven at 28-21 behind shots from Laura Riddick and Kaylin Little, who had a team high 12 points to go with three steals and two assists. After a Scott jumper, Kia Hartfield drained a three-bomb making it 33-21 in favor of the Lady Mustangs. Little answered with a three of her own but then WO-S was able to go on a 6-0 run pushing the lead up to 39-24. Orangefield then hit six straight free throws, four from Riddick and two from Jessica Shores, to climb back to within 39-30. A Scott freebie gave WO-S a 10-point cushion heading into the decisive fourth period. The Lady Mustangs went 10-for-12 at the free throw line in the fourth while Orangefield was just 4-for-10 and could not make up any ground. Scott had 14 points in the closing period and Orangefield had 10 of their 26 turnovers in the game’s final eight minutes. “This was a game we had to have,†Scott said. “We knew we needed to win to get into the playoffs and we knew they would not give it to us since they wanted first in the district. We haven’t won a big game in district this season so it feels nice to finally get a key win at the right time.†Orangefield Kristy Sanders was not her usual-self with eight points, five rebounds and just two assists and one steal. Riddick added nine points and five rebounds for the Lady Bobcats. “I think fatigue has finally caught up to us,†Ancelot said. “The good news is we only have one game next week. There will be a lot of time for rest but also a lot of time for some hard practicing.â€
