  3. Montoya, Pruett give Ganassi back-to-back wins DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Juan Pablo Montoya gave his team the lead and Scott Pruett kept it until the finish Sunday for a victory in the Rolex 24 sports car endurance race. Joined by Mexican driver Salvador Duran, Montoya added his first sports car title in the Daytona 24-hour race to a CART championship, the 2000 Indianapolis 500 win and seven victories in Formula One. Pruett, a veteran road racer, earned his second Daytona win. Montoya will be back in this city in three weeks to begin his first full NASCAR season in the Daytona 500. This is the second straight year that Chip Ganassi's team has won this event. Former IRL champions Dan Wheldon and Scott Dixon combined with NASCAR driver Casey Mears to win the 2006 race in one of the team's sleek Lexus Riley Daytona Prototypes. "This was just a total team win," said Ganassi, the first team owner to win this race back-to-back since Al Holbert in 1986 and 1987. "Al was somebody I wanted to be like when I was growing up and I'm going to think about that for a long time." The winning car covered 668 laps and 2,378 miles. The race was slowed by 13 full-course caution flags and a 78-minute red flag stoppage at the halfway point after a GT class car knocked down 80 feet of guardrail. Pruett and Duran avoided the big pitfalls that hurt other teams in the twice-around-the-clock event. The race was hotly contested, with two cars finishing on the lead lap. With only three hours to go, three cars were nose to tail for the lead, with Montoya third and battling Scotland's Ryan Dalziel and Italy's Max Angelelli. "It's amazing," Montoya said in the tumultuous Victory Circle. "It's incredible after 20 hours there are three cars on the same lap. It was like qualifying every lap. Very exciting." Dalziel, who will be a rookie in the Champ Car World Series this season, held off the two veterans until he pitted during the 24th hour. That gave the lead to Angelelli, but the former Daytona winner was quickly passed by Montoya and the eventual winners led the rest of the way. During the 25th hour, Pruett, who added the overall win here in 2004 to five other class victories, took over the cockpit from his Colombian teammate, while Dalziel gave up his seat in the Pontiac Riley prototype to longtime open-wheel racer Patrick Carpentier and road racing ace Jan Magnussen took over the third-place Pontiac Riley for Angelelli. Magnussen managed to put the car also shared by two-time Daytona winner Wayne Taylor and four-time NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon into second place. But he wound up third, two laps down, after brake problems sent him on an off-course excursion and forced a long pit stop during the final half hour. It was still a great showing considering their problems. The team had no clutch for most of the race and had to be push-started by the crew after every pit stop. Carpentier, also co-driving with Darren Manning and Milka Duno, one of only two women in the 70-car race, finished second -- 1 minute, 14.749 seconds behind the winners. 7. Lamar women beat McNeese St. by 11 BEAUMONT - Somebody's losing skid had to snap when the Lamar University women's basketball team hosted McNeese State Saturday night in the Montagne Center. With the Lady Cardinals entering the contest having lost two consecutive games and the Cowgirls on the heels of a 12-game losing streak, the tide would turn for one team. Feeling warm at home in a place Lamar has won 8-of-10 games this season, the Lady Cardinals scraped together a 71-60 victory over McNeese in Southland Conference action. Lamar, which improves to 9-9 overall and 4-2 in SLC play, came into Saturday's game after losing road games to Central Arkansas and Northwestern State over the past week. After notching a five-game win streak and winning their first three SLC games earlier this month, the Lady Cardinals were certainly relieved to regain some success. "It was ugly, but at least we're on the correct column of the scoreboard," Lamar coach Leonard Drake said. "We didn't play nearly as well or as smoothly as I think we can play offensively. At times, they (the Cowgirls) had five guards on the floor, and we were scrambling to match up and then rotate." A slim four-point advantage is all Lamar held at halftime, but the Lady Cardinals jumped out with a 14-2 run over the first six minutes of the second half to extend the lead to 48-32. The Cowgirls, however, never gave up. McNeese (2-17 overall and 0-6 in SLC) continually attacked the basket and got to the free throw line where it shot 12-of-14 over the final 12 minutes. Powered by their ability to get into the paint, the Cowgirls slithered to within eight points when forward Reeshimah Davis delivered a layup off the glass with 9:25 left. Instead of sitting back and losing its third consecutive contest, Lamar didn't allow the Cowgirls to strike any closer the rest of the way. Five players netted double figures in scoring for the Lady Cardinals with freshman forward Brittney Williams and senior Dionne Pounds leading the way with 15 points apiece. Guard Alexis Timpone also chipped in with 13 points, while senior LaToya Carson and junior center Shaquita Coffey each scored 10. Courtnee' Hollins paced the Cowgirls with 22 points, including 5-of-7 shooting from behind the 3-point line. Lamar will now plat at Nicholls State on Thursday before hosting Southeastern Louisiana this coming Saturday. The Lady Cardinals are1-8 on the road this season and will look to improve that mark. "I don't even know who played well tonight," Drake said. "I'm just glad we got the win, and let's keep it going. The bottom line is we did enough to get the W. "Now we'll spend the next few days to get prepared to go to Thibodaux (La.) to play Nicholls."

  11. Seniors Brown, Gibson power Lady Pirates Van Wade The Orange Leader DEWEYVILLE — Right in the thick of the District 24-2A hoop race, the Deweyville Lady Pirates and head coach Kristi Henderson are leaning on two seniors to lead the way. One thing for sure, point guard Teresa Brown and forward Tera Gibson have fit the bill as far as being strong leaders on and off the court. Gibson is a gifted shooter inside and outside and has been a starter for four seasons while Brown has matured as the floor general and is a two-year starter. “Those two kids, they’re treasures to coach,†said Henderson. “They’ve developed into great leaders and all the kids look up to them. There quite a tandem. They always seem to know what each other is thinking at all times.†Gibson has always been a solid outside shooter, but it’s her inside game that has improved the most. “My freshman year, I mainly stayed outside, but I later got moved inside and I had to develop my game even more,†said Gibson. “I always feel like I can get better inside but by improving in that area, it’s helped my outside game too.†“The thing I’ve noticed the most about Tera is her intensity this season,†said Henderson. “She’s always been a tremendous competitor but this year she’s turned it up to an even higher level. With her and Teresa being the only seniors, they both knew they had to step it up more this season.†Brown has fit in comfortably at the point this year after having a little “learning curve†as a junior. “Teresa is a true point guard, that’s for sure,†said Henderson. “She’s pretty vocal at times and sometimes she can communicate well without even saying a word. She’s made the biggest improvement, though, on the defensive side.†“I’m making smarter decisions this year with the ball,†Brown said. “My shot has improved a lot and I’ve been able to help the team more this year by scoring a little more.†The two’s uncanny ability of knowing where each other is at came to the forefront on Jan. 9 when the Lady Pirates stunned the Kountze Lionettes 62-61 on the road in 24-2A play. Trailing 61-59 with four seconds remaining, Gibson inbounded the ball to Brown, who was able to break free after a nice screen by teammate Krista Goleman, and Brown drained a three-point bomb as time expired. “Maybe we were more lucky than good that night, but we’ll certainly take it,†said Brown. “Tera just found me and I did what I had to do and there wasn’t much thought in it, I had to put it up and it fell, I couldn’t feel my legs after that even though I think I completely jumped over Coach Henderson after it went in.†Gibson loves the role her and Brown play with this year’s team. “There is something unique about this team, it has a feeling it can win when things get tough and that’s been a difference this year,†Gibson said. “We’ve been able to win some close games. Our younger teammates, we love them to death. Whatever we say, they just eat it up.†The Lady Pirates (12-12, 6-4) are in the heart of the 24-2A race. The Hardin Lady Hornets have ran away with the district, sporting a 10-0 loop record. East Chambers and Kountze both stand 6-3 while the Lady Pirates are breathing down their necks. The Lady Pirates will head to Buna Tuesday and if they can pull that road win at they’re looking at a crucial home date with Kountze Friday that will help tell the tale. “We want to finish the season up strong, that’s for sure,†said Gibson. “We’re looking forward to playing Kountze on Friday but that won’t mean anything if we don’t win against Buna.†“Hardin is certainly a team all by itself, they’re so strong both inside and outside,†said Henderson. “Everyone else is so eqaul in talent, it’s just a matter who steps up on any given night and that’s the team that’s going to win. I like the way the kids have responded lately, especially in tight situations.â€

Texas went up 48-41 on Brittainey Raven's 3 with 2:07 left before Robertson hit the first of two from beyond the arc to cut the margin to 48-44. A basket from Erin Myrick cut the lead to two with 1:10 left and the Lady Longhorns failed to score on their next two possessions. Robertson's winning shot - her second field goal of the game - came after Raquel Christian missed a short jumper from the right side and a jump ball was called between Robertson and Bailey, with Tech retaining possession. Robertson got the ball at the top of the key and nailed the 3. Texas still had a chance, though. After calling time out, Tiffany Jackson brought the ball all the way up the court and drove to the basket but missed. Earnesia Williams got the rebound and missed the putback. Raven and Carla Cortijo scored 10 points to lead Texas (14-7, 3-4 Big 12). Myrick had 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Patrice Edwards added 11 points to lead Tech (13-8, 4-3). The Lady Longhorns got up by nine points early in the second half and Tech failed to score a field goal until 13:23. But Tech used a 11-5 run ending with a bucket by Patrice Edwards to whittle the deficit to 34-31. However, Texas used a 9-4 run to go up 43-35 at the 5:52 mark. Foul trouble plagued Jackson and she played only 15 minutes. She got only two points - a season low - and two rebounds. She came into the game as the Big 12's second-leading scorer with 19.1 points per game. The win came despite the worst shooting this season for Tech. The Lady Raiders hit only 15 of 57 shots, or 26.3 percent, from the field. Their previous low came at Hawaii when they shot 27.7 percent. Myrick started strong inside for Tech, scoring the Lady Raiders' first eight points. Her defender, Jackson, picked two quick fouls and left for the half with just 5 minutes gone - no points or rebounds - and the Lady Longhorns down 8-6. Texas got quicker as a result and Tech just went cold. In the final 11:53 of the half, the Lady Raiders hit just two field goals - 3-pointers from Brooke Baughman and a buzzer beater from Jordan Murphree. For the half, Tech shot 19.4 percent on 6-of-31 from the field. Texas led 24-20 at the break. © 2007 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
