Coach sentenced to probation for punching referee 02:20 PM CST on Friday, January 19, 2007 Associated Press GRAPEVINE - A volunteer high school football coach was sentenced to 15 months' probation for punching a referee when his son's team was losing. As part of a plea deal with prosecutors Thursday, Charles Kirkland, 47, pleaded no contest to misdemeanor assault and was sentenced to probation with deferred adjudication, which means it will be cleared from his record if he successfully completes the terms. Kirkland also was fined $680 for assaulting referee Culley Phillips of Arlington during a seven-on-seven football game in June at Grapevine High School. Phillips, who suffered a split lip, said it was the first time he had been assaulted in 30 years as a referee. "I'm glad it's ended," Phillips said. "It was about what I expected." Wylie was losing against Lewisville Hebron when Kirkland punched Phillips in the game's second half. The two men wrestled to the ground before others separated them and the game was stopped, police said. Because of the assault, Kirkland's team, on which his son plays, had to forfeit two games. Kirkland's attorney, Todd Shapiro of Plano, told The Associated Press on Friday that accepting the plea deal was a difficult decision for his client but that he is active in the community and "didn't want to drag people into a trial."

Student cuffed, ejected for...standing at a basketball game Quote: from SI.com, by Andy Gray Nineteen-year-old Avinash Murthy figured last Thursday's game between Arizona and Oregon State would be just like every other game he's attended at the McKale Center in Tucson, Ariz. Murthy, who attends Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., has been attending Zona games his whole life and his parents have had season tickets since 1987. But this was no ordinary game. After an Arizona basket, Murthy stood and cheered ... and stood ... and stood ... and stood. Soon, people in his section were asking him to sit, and like any stubborn college student, Murthy refused. Before long, security came over and offered him a seat in a different section. Murthy again refused, claiming that the seat was worse than the one he had and that he has a right to stand. Unfortunately, the UA athletic department disagreed and Murthy was soon escorted out of the arena in handcuffs. University police Commander Kevin Haywood told the Arizona Daily Star: "He refused to stop standing even though the play of the game did not dictate that." Murthy felt he was well within his right to stand. "I could not believe I was being ejected for standing up at a basketball game," he said. "As long as I'm not throwing stuff, being vulgar, anything like that, I think it's well within my rights to stand up for any duration I want." While Murthy may have a point, it's worth noting that Tuscon is a popular retirement spot and the crowds at Wildcats games are often split evenly between students and senior citizens. So should a student – even if he's being a passionate fan – be removed from a game for being too passionate and angering an entire section? SIOC says NOOOO! College fans are among the most passionate in the world and shouldn't be punished for that. Murthy is a hero in our eyes for taking a stand. What do you think? Opinions

Warren At Kountze Predictions?
KFDM COOP replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Duane Joubert doesn't have time to worry about records. To prove it, the Kountze basketball coach doesn't even know his team's overall record. "To be honest, I don't know our record off hand," Joubert said. "The reason why I don't know it is because I'm not really worried about records. I'm more worried about making it to the state championship game." It took Joubert five minutes to figure out his team's overall record. He finally came up with 19-5 overall and 4-1 in District 24-2A play. "Our goal is to win every game we play, but we don't dwell on preseason games," Joubert said. "We use those games as practice for the district season. I don't keep up with preseason games that much so that's why it takes me some time to figure up our overall record. But I do know our district record because that gets us into the playoffs." Kountze continues district play at 7:30 p.m. today against Warren at the Lions' gym. "Warren is a good team," Joubert said. "They have won 20 games so far so they are a strong team. I think if we want to get the win we have to come out and play hard." So far, Kountze has racked up district wins against Buna, Anahuac, Hardin and Deweyville. The Lions are coming off of a 94-44 victory over Buna on Tuesday night. Kountze's only district loss of the season was a 65-60 loss to East Chambers. "The loss to East Chambers is always in the back of my head," Joubert said. "But we are trying to take care of every game that we play. We know that we have to be ready to play because on any given night you can take a loss in this district." Silsbee coach Travis Williams feels the same way about his district. Williams knows that another loss and his team could possibly be out of contention for the District 21-3A title. Silsbee, West Orange-Stark, and Hardin-Jefferson are all tied for first place in the district at 5-1. "The kids are doing a good job in district play," Williams said. "We only have one returning starter from last season so to be tied for first place with a 5-1 record feels good." Williams didn't think it was a good idea either to dwell on records. He thought it would hinder the type of teams that they play during the preseason. "As a coach you keep up with your record but you can't worry about it too much," Williams said. "If I worried about records than I wouldn't have played the teams that I played during the preseason. I knew we were in a tough district so we played tough schools to prepare for district play." Some of the notable schools that Silsbee played during the preseason included Ozen, Longview, East Chambers and Kountze. The Tigers are now 16-6 overall and 5-1 in District 21-3A play. Silsbee hosts Bridge City at 7:30 p.m. today in another district showdown at the Tigers gym. "We are in a brutal district so you have to be ready to play," Williams said. "You can be beat on any given night so you have to have your game plan in place." -
****Ozen's New Head Coach Is Ishan Rison ****

"He's going to make that game awfully tough to win," said Stowers, whose Central team reached the playoffs in both of his two years at the school. With Rison as offensive coordinator, Central averaged 346.3 yards and nearly 30 points per game last season. Central finished in second place in District 22-4A with a 6-1 record. The team lost in the second round of the playoffs with an 8-4 overall record. Rison worked as an assistant coach at four schools before going to Central. He coached in his hometown of Hallsville for two years, Irving MacArthur for four, Dallas Kimball for one and Arlington Lamar for three. He said he was a runner-up for a head coaching job in Arlington three years ago. "He does all the little things some coaches might not want to do to provide for the kids and make sure our program is running on all cylinders," Stowers said. "He did a good job for us. I hate to lose him, but I'm glad he got what he wanted. It's what he's been wanting since he got in the business." Rison was a walk-on offensive lineman at Lamar before the school dropped the program. Stowers also played at Lamar, and both players transferred to New Mexico State. Former New Mexico State coach Jim Hess said he occasionally talks with Rison and Stowers on the phone and at coaching conventions. "It didn't surprise me at all (that they became coaches) because they both had an innate knowledge of the game," said Hess, 70, who lives in San Angelo and recently retired as a scout for the Dallas Cowboys. "They seemed to comprehend it a bit better than a lot of other people. They get the big picture, and not just their part of it." Rison's first game as Central's offensive coordinator in 2005 was against West Brook and in a familiar setting. "It was at Lamar," he said, recalling that he walked off the field in 1989 with his Lamar teammates - Stowers included - after the football program's final home game. "We were acquaintances then," Rison said. "But then when we went to New Mexico State, we were roommates and best friends pretty much ever since." -
