Bears happy to be home to face Lions Van Wade The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — While the entire school is celebrating Homecoming this week, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin'’ Bear football team certainly is as well. The Bears (2-4, 0-3) will welcome the Livingston Lions (3-3, 1-2) in District 20-4A action. That’s right, host. The young Bears have been prowling on the road since Sept. 18. They will get to play on their home turf for the first time in 35 days. “I hope the kids respond well,†said Bear coach Randy Crouch. “It’s been a long road trip and I know they’re thrilled about playing at home.†The Bears will certainly have to be focused on trying to slow down Livingston’s high-powered Wing-T arsenal, especially running back Quinton Jackson, who leads 20-4A individuals on the ground with 1,013 yards and 11 touchdowns on just 149 carries. The Bears have allowed more rushing yards than any other 20-4A unit. “The Jackson kid can flat out go,†said Crouch. “You definitely want to keep him in front of you. We’ve got to tackle well and get people to the point of attack.†Livingston has the second-ranked offense in 20-4A, putting up 362 yards per game. Keke Johnson (50-374-6) and Greg Johnson (30-212-4) also run well in the attack while quarterback Blake Burman has completed 14-of-41 passes for 262 yards and four TDs. Both teams are coming off tough losses last week. The Bears fell to Nederland 36-14 while the Lions fell to first-place Port Neches-Groves 30-7. The Lion defense, which gives up 281.5 yards a game, will try to slow down the Bears and their balanced attack. Junior quarterback Hunter Gonzales has completed 87-of-158 passes for 847 yards and three TDs. His two favorite targets have been 20-4A’s leading receiver in Zack Sonnier (40-439-3) along with Johnny Epps (22-196-1). Tailback Tevvin Jones leads the ground game with 417 yards and three TDs on 67 totes. The Bears are searching for their first District 20-4A win since 2007 as they look to finish off Homecoming with a big “W.†“It’s been a tough last couple weeks but the kids continue to practice and battle hard,†said Crouch. “We’ve got a lot of competitors in this group. When things get tough, you have to learn to press on. If we can do that, we’ll be just fine. We just need to roll up our sleeves and get busy.â€

Mustangs regrouped and ready for H-F Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — Putting the 29-game district win streak behind them, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs look to start another one tonight when the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns come to town. The Mustangs (4-2, 0-1) are looking to put last week’s 13-7 District 21-3A loss to Silsbee behind them and the woeful Longhorns (0-6, 0-1) just might be the perfect cure. “The kids have bounced back pretty well and we’ve had some good workouts so far this week,†said Mustang head coach Dan Hooks. “Streaks are streaks and all of them come to an end eventually. Silsbee almost got us at our place last year and they finally got us this year. It was a tough deal last Friday night but our kids are scrappy and they’ll be ready to go against Hamshire.†The Mustangs look to spice up their offense after getting just 65 total yards in the loss to the Tigers. WO-S is averaging 247 yards a game for the season. “We’ve been struggling on offense, that’s no doubt,†said Hooks. “We’ve got to be able to execute better and make plays when they are there. We’ve been tinkering with a few new looks and sets in practice this week that we think is going to help a bunch.†Junior quarterback Reggie Garrett remains the second leading passer in 21-3A, completing 47-of-103 passes for 672 yards and seven touchdowns. Junior Mark Roberts has 15 catches for 262 yards and two TDs while senior Trey Franks has 13 catches for 163 yards and a TD. Sophomore tailback Britton Lindsey, who has battled a back injury the last couple weeks, leads the ground game with 382 yards and four TDs on 79 carries. H-F has 21-3A’s worst defense, one that is giving up 360.5 per game. The Mustangs, as usual, have the district’s top defense, one that allows just 199.5 yards per outing. They will try to push back a Longhorn offense that has really struggled. H-F comes in just managing 183.5 yards a game. H-F Running back Austin Simmons has been productive go, rushing for 491 yards and three TDs on 73 carries. He had 116 tough yards on 18 carries in a 54-9 loss at Orangefield last week. “Hamshire has been struggling throughout the year and they’ve been hit with a ton of injuries, some before the season even started,†said Hooks. “The kids they have are playing hard despite not having a whole lot of depth. We can’t overlook them. We’ve got to go out and play 48 strong minutes Friday. There are a lot of things we need to work on with four games left on the schedule.†The Mustangs have made the postseason with ease since 2004 and look to carry on that tradition. “One loss, that isn’t going to kill you,†said Hooks. “We’re stressing to the kids that they have to win the next four. Going 4-1 will definitely get you in the playoffs, 3-2 might be a different story when you start talking all those tiebreakers and such. The Silsbee loss needs to be put behind us and I think the kids realize that.â€

PORT NECHES -- Port Neches-Groves has welcomed its first 6-0 start since 2003, but no Indian would boast as much as to proclaim 6-0 would come easily. If they studied those Indians game videos, they might attribute some of their prosperity to Aaron Easley. A defensive lineman with the heart of an Indian, this junior personally had a lot to do with shutting down Livingston in the second half last Friday night. Long-time Southeast Texas scribe Steven Cohan covered PN-G's 30-7 win last week as a correspondent for The News. The 5-11, 245-pound son of Groves residents Richard and Debra Easley played so actively in the trenches that he enabled his No. 61 to stand out on Lion Stadium's muddy field anyway. When this reporter asked his old friend 'How PN-G looked?', the Houston-based writer started out by saying, "That No. 61 was in on just about every play in the second half." Cohan saw the same thing that Easley felt -- that Livingston had been Aaron's best game so far with the Indians. The good news for PN-G is Aaron's only a junior and his broken hand is healing more and more by the day. Easley suffered a fracture to his right hand during a Monday practice after the Indians jumped out to a 2-0 start. He got tripped during a pass rush drill and landed on his hand. Broken hand or not, Easley never missed a game, wearing a hard cast against Texas City, Little Cypress-Mauriceville and Nederland. A soft cast replaced the hard cast last Thursday before PN-G traveled to Livingston. Good defensive linemen learn to use their hands. By changing to the more flexible soft cast, Easley noticed a great difference. "I can grab now," he said. "Before with the hard cast, I couldn't wrap up as good." If anyone sees Aaron Easley's heart alive and beating on a football field, that someone would be Indians' defensive line coach Mike Arnaud. Plenty of outstanding new coaches have arrived at The Reservation this year. Easley is delighted that Indians' chief Brandon Faircloth opted to retain Arnaud from Matt Burnett's 2008 staff. "I'm really glad he (Arnaud) stayed," Easley said. "It's much easier having him because we didn't have to learn a whole new way of doing things." Defensive coordinator Duane Kroeker has found an effective way of successfully involving two rotations of defensive linemen. Christian Shetley, Taylor Thompson and Dallas Davis are listed as starters. D.J. Schexnider, Spencer Allen and Easley enable the Indians depth to operate at a high level without breaking stride. "Aaron caught my eye in the off-season because he's an extremely hard worker," head coach Faircloth said. "He cares a lot about being an Indian." Easley played in the defensive line last year but opened the August drills as a more likely offensive line starter. Injuries depleted the defensive line and that caused the coaches to return Easley to familiar territory. Call it another battle with adversity which only raised the level of Aaron's game. "I was looking like I was going to be a starter in the offensive line and people (in defensive line positions) started getting injured," he said. "They moved me back to help out. I have more respect for offensive linemen now that I've played on both sides of the ball." The 17-year-old Easley plays with great leverage and technique, rather than merely overpowering players. Why did he enjoy such a dominant stretch at Livingston? 1. The Lions predominantly run the ball (this week's foe Vidor does, too). 2. His soft cast enabled more mobility (that may improve more, too, as his hand heals). 3. Aaron was in the right place at the right time (sometimes it's that way, sometimes it's not). "It was just a mixture of things," he said. "We made some good halftime adjustments. It stopped raining at half. And I guess I was just there." We can guess Livingston just would wish that Aaron wasn't just there. Easley just plain made every play in Steve Cohan's recollection. Indian Inklings Homecoming on The Reservation starts tonight with the annual parade from Port Neches Middle School to the High School on Merriman St. Members of the classes of 1964 and 1979 will be recognized during homecoming ceremonies. A pep rally will be held in the gym Friday at 2:30 p.m. The Indians Sweetheart will be crowned in pre-game ceremonies at 7 p.m. prior to the 7:30 kickoff. The homecoming dance will follow the game in the PN-G cafeteria.... Two 6-0 junior varsity teams clash tonight at 7 p.m. when Vidor and PN-G meet at the Vidor Junior High stadium. The purple JV is under the direction of coach Ryan Cox.... The Port Arthur News Friday Night Experience will carry the Vidor/PN-G game. The game will be available around midnight on panews.com and will air Saturday at noon on Time Warner Cable 15. Mark McClain and Bob West will be at mikeside for that telecast.... Aaron Easley headed Ryan Cox's trusty tackle chart with five solos and two assists in Livingston followed closely by Dre' Dunbar and Taylor Thompson with 4 solos and 3 assists. Kane Benoit (23 & 27), Christian Kerr (21 & 24) and Dre' Dunbar (20 & 12) rank 1-2-3 in total tackle numbers through six games...

That's your opinion. As little yards as WOS had, 1 dropped pass away in the 4th Quarter from winning. Remember that! -
