  2. Former heavyweight champ faces jail on drug charges PHOENIX -- Former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson was charged Wednesday with drug possession and driving under the influence of drugs, and the Maricopa County prosecutor says he wants to send him to prison. "He has run out of second chances, at least in my book," attorney Andrew Thomas said in a news conference. Tyson, 40, was charged with two felonies for drug possession and two misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence of drugs. If convicted of all four charges, he could be sentenced to between 2 and 7 years. The charges stem from his arrest Friday in Scottsdale, where Tyson was pulled over after leaving a nightclub. An officer found bags of cocaine in his back pocket and another in a package of cigarettes in his car, according to court records. Tyson's criminal attorney, Thomas Marlow, didn't return phone calls Wednesday from The Associated Press. Tyson's arrest was the latest in a string of run-ins with the law, dating back more than a decade. In 1992, Tyson was convicted of rape in Indiana. Six years later, the former boxing champ pleaded no contest to misdemeanor assault charges in Maryland. Thomas said Tyson's record makes him eligible for prison time instead of Arizona's drug treatment programs for nonviolent offenders. "I don't take any pleasure out of doing this," Thomas said. "A week ago, my kids and I were watching Rocky Balboa in the movie theater, and we saw Mike Tyson make a cameo appearance in the movie, and now here we are and he's looking at going back to prison." Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion in history in 1986, when at 20 he knocked out Trevor Berbick. Four years later he was knocked out by James "Buster" Douglas. By 1997, Tyson's career hit its low point when he bit Evander Holyfield's ear during a fight. Tyson recently got back in the ring for a series of four-round exhibitions. When announcing the world tour, Tyson told reporters he was deep in debt and wondered if people would still pay to watch him fight. On Friday, Tyson was released without bond after a brief court appearance. He didn't make any comment to reporters, except to offer a greeting. Thomas said Tyson should be back in court for a preliminary hearing within the next two weeks. The car Tyson was driving was spotted weaving and nearly struck a police SUV after he ran a stop sign early Friday, according to a police probable cause statement filed in court. During the stop, police said they saw him trying to wipe a white powder off the console of his car. No alcohol was detected in his system. But Thomas said Tyson failed a sobriety test and officers searching his vehicle found three bags that later tested positive for cocaine. The officer who made the arrest wrote in his report that Tyson "admitted to using today and stated he is an addict and has a problem." Tyson is required to submit to drug and alcohol testing and is prohibited from drinking or taking any nonprescription drugs while the case is pending. Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press
  3. Study claims imaging tests show larger rubber core CLEVELAND -- A company that uses computer imaging claims baseballs had a larger rubberized core and a synthetic rubber ring in 1998, including the ball Mark McGwire hit for his 70th homer. Universal Medical Systems Inc. said Wednesday that with the assistance of Dr. Avrami S. Grader and Dr. Philip M. Halleck from The Center for Quantitative Imaging at Penn State, it took images of 1998 baseballs. "Examining the CT images of Mark McGwire's 70th home run ball one can clearly see the synthetic ring around the core -- or 'pill' -- of the baseball," UMS president David Zavagno said. "While Mark McGwire may or may not have used illegal steroids, the evidence shows his ball -- under the governing body of the league -- was juiced." But Bob DuPuy, baseball's chief operating officer, said the core of the ball has been unchanged for decades. Rawlings has been the exclusive supplier of baseballs to the major leagues since 1977. "All of our balls are subject to rigorous quality control standards and testing conducted by Rawlings," DuPuy said. "No changes have been made to the core of the ball through the entire time they have manufactured it." UMS specifically examined the ball McGwire hit for No. 70 -- a record surpassed when Barry Bonds hit 73 homers in 2001. Zavagno said the company tested about 35 baseballs in all. McGwire is on the Hall of Fame ballot for the first time this year, and results will be announced Tuesday by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. "The synthetic rubber ring of the modern-day baseball, in this case that of Mark McGwire's prized 70th home run ball, acts as both a spring and a 'stop,'" Zavagno said. "Much like a sling shot pulled back 10 or 20 degrees farther than normal, the subsequent restitution or rebound allows an object to fly faster and farther." Baseball spokesman Rich Levin said what UMS calls a rubber ring is more like a cardboard washer. "We are satisfied that the ball comports with all major league specifications," DuPuy said. "Beginning in 2000, we have had annual independent testing done by UMass at Lowell, baseball research center, under the direction of Dr. James Sherwood, and those tests have showed full compliance with standards." 5. Riley to have surgery on right knee, hip Miami Heat coach Pat Riley will take a leave of absence to have surgery on his right knee and hip. The Chicago Tribune first reported that Riley would take a leave from the team, which plays the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday before embarking on a six-game Western road trip. A team spokesperson confirmed the leave of absence to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Will the Miami Heat make the playoffs? Yes No According to ESPN's Hank Goldberg, Riley will have surgery on his right knee and hip and plans to return to the bench. The team was expected to hold a news conference Wednesday afternoon. The Tribune reported that Riley informed the team of the decision on Wednesday morning. Assistant Ron Rothstein will coach the team in his absence. Riley spoke earlier in the week about the knee pain. "I've got floating chips," he told the Sun-Sentinel. "I've got three or four things that have been floating in there for years. If I get it done, it'll be a day. There's just going to scope it and flush it out. "I had an MRI the other day. It showed all these loose parts in there," Riley told the newspaper. "Lately it's been locking up and staying there." The Heat, who have been without center Shaquille O'Neal, are off

  8. 'Catters' Cameron to coach in ECHL '07 All-Star Game Malcolm Cameron's Texas Wildcatters hockey team has the best record in the ECHL, a mark that will make him one of four coaches selected for the league's upcoming all-star game. The ECHL is expected to announce Cameron as a coach for the American Conference all-star team today. The game is Jan. 17 in Boise, Idaho. This will be Cameron's first appearance as a player or coach in an all-star game. He played five seasons and is in his fifth season as a head coach. Cameron said he had been picked as an all-star coach in the United Hockey League when he was in Columbus three years ago but didn't get to participate because the team folded about a week before the game. "I've been to an all-star game before," said Cameron, who attended the 2003 ECHL game in Florida. "It was a wonderful experience just to be on the outside watching it. I've known coaches who went to it and said it was a fun experience." The coach of the team with the best winning percentage in the American and National conferences through Jan. 1 is selected to the all-star game, according to the ECHL. An additional coach for each conference is picked based on a team's winning percentage and votes from coaches within the conference. The Wildcatters have ECHL-best totals in winning percentage (.741), standings points (43) and wins (20), all through 29 games. Three Wildcatters players will join Cameron in Boise. Forward Kevin Baker and defensemen Paul Albers and Mike Madill were selected to the 21-player American Conference roster. Las Vegas coach Glen Gulutzan should be announced as a coach for the National Conference. Other coaches will be announced today. Still waiting Goalie Miroslav Kopriva returned from a two-game stint with the Houston Aeros, but Baker, Marco Rosa and J.F. David have not returned from their American Hockey League teams. Baker is with Toronto, Rosa with Providence and David with Binghamton.

  10. Stabbing at Cheli's Bar involved employees DETROIT -- Two people were found stabbed to death Tuesday morning at a sports bar owned by Detroit Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios, authorities said. Police arrested a former employee, according to news reports. The victims were a man and woman who both worked for Cheli's Chili Bar, officials said. They were found shortly after 9 a.m. on the restaurant's second floor, said police spokeswoman Yvette Walker. A former employee was arrested, the Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News reported. Earlier, Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings told the Free Press that "a former disgruntled employee" may have been responsible. The newspapers identified the victims as Megan Soroka, 49, of suburban Dearborn, and Mark Barnard, 52, of Detroit. Soroka was a manager and Barnard was a cook, the papers said. A message seeking additional information was left Tuesday night with police. Police also questioned other employees in the restaurant at the time of the killings, believed to be shortly before 9 a.m. The three-story building sits next to Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers. "We are deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred at our establishment this morning," Chelios said in a statement. "Our hearts go out to the families of the victims -- they were wonderful employees and were part of our family." Chelios opened the sports bar and restaurant in 2005. The restaurant, which has a banner honoring former Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman hanging from an exterior wall, had been expected to have a busy night Tuesday because of a ceremony at Joe Louis Arena honoring Yzerman. The restaurant remained closed Tuesday night, said spokeswoman Jennifer Cooper. Chelios, who did not play in Detroit's 2-1 win against Anaheim on Tuesday night, will not travel with the team on Wednesday so he can deal with matters at his bar, coach Mike Babcock said. The Red Wings play in San Jose on Thursday. Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press
