Cardinal CC units shine at McNeil Invitational Van Wade The Orange Leader ROUND ROCK — The Bridge City cross country teams competed hard and fared very well at the McNeil Invitational held at the state course Saturday. Cardinal Tim Cude competed in the Class 5A-4A Division and placed a solid 16th over the three-mile course, running a 16:35.68. There were 396 runners competing. The rest of the Cardinals competed in the 3A-and-Under Division and placed eighth out of 36 schools. Kirby Shepherd led the way with a 16:56.11 to place 14th and was followed by teammates Armando Chavez (50th, 17:48.77), Luke Hebert (54th, 17:51.29); Sawyer Hogan (60th, 18:00.05); Aaron Lejeune (79th, 18:25.06); Jose Chavez (114th, 18:52.64); and Matthew Wappler (141st, 19:16.93). There were 309 competitors in the race. “There wasn’t any of our regional competitors there but the kids did really well,†said Cardinal coach Cody Knight. “Only three 3A schools were ahead of us. If we had Tim, who ran so well in the 5A-4A Division, we would’ve been the top 3A school. It’s such a challenging course and the kids really enjoyed it.†The Lady Cardinals placed 14th out of 38 teams. Mary Nguyen led the way, placing 42nd over the two-mile course with a time of 12:55.58. She was followed by Jessica Franklin (45th, 12:57.69); Megan Shockley (60th, 13:09.51); Ariel Chesson (140th, 13:54.23); Courtney Meaux (157th, 14:03.27); Lisa Huynh (171st, 14:11.82); and Arron Valencia (194th, 14:28.21). The Cardinals will venture to the challenging Nike South Invitational at The Woodlands next week.

Always remember, when a team Doesn't use the Beaumont Chapter they are getting a crew from somewhere else that DOESN'T even have a game that night. -

Scales powering Lady Bobcat net squad Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — Aimee Scales has been around Orangefield High School for what seems like forever. Now that the district volleyball season has started, Scales is slowly starting to realize the run is almost over. Scales has been on the varsity level in just about every sport for four years. She has become a mainstay in the starting lineups for what seems like a decade. “I am actually starting to get sad,†Scales said. “This is all I do. My senior year is going by a lot faster than I ever imagined. I kind of wish we were at non-district again so I would have more time.†The Lady Bobcats have made serious strides in volleyball over the last several years and Scales has been a big part of the turnaround and the team currently site alone at the top of the District 21-3A standing at 3-0 after downing rival Bridge City in four games Friday night at Bobcat Gym. Scales has played volleyball ever since she was in seventh grade and has grown to love her Lady Bobcats teammates. “I like how in this sport you really have to work together to finish the job,†Scales said. “We all have input in the matches. Before we would just run out there and go play. Now we all have certain spots to be in and it is working out.†Scales for three years sat back and had to listen as other seniors had the upper voice. This season it has been Scales who has lifted her voice to lead Orangefield. “I love being the one who has a voice,†Scales said. “I always listened to the past seniors and now it is my turn. These are the best girls in the world to have as teammates. They listen more than any other team I have ever been on.†Scales and the Lady Bobcats are off to a great start in District 21-3A play and are hoping to make the playoffs again, this team maybe go even farther than last year. “You always want to get off to a good start,†Scales said. “We want to push for our first goal of a district championship and then go farther in the playoffs than we did last year. This year our district is harder than ever. There is so much talent on every team. If we play like I know we are capable of playing, I think we will be alright.â€
