Dayton needs a Rival since their in this District now. 8) -
Defenseless Dogs' Have Rough Night in Dayton Dayton proved once again that it deserves the crown in District 22-4A after defeating Nederland 35-7 Friday night. Nederland entered week 9 after a huge win over LC-M that all but solidified a playoff spot for the Bulldogs. On a very chilly night in Dayton, the Broncos rolled through Nederland's defense all night with little attention to Michael Dugat. Dayton's coaching staff exposed a noticeable weakness in the Nederland defense that would be evident in every game film since the Vidor game, the secondary. Nederland's inability to defend against the pass enabled Dugat to rack up some yards. No we arent talking about Michael Dugat, we are talking about A.J. Dugat, the wide receiver and brother of the more notably talked about running back for the Broncos. If you looked at just the rushing stats for Dayton going into the half, you would suspect that Nederland was fairing quite well, 20 yards is all Dayton racked up on the ground. It was the passing game, however, that accumulated 149 yards through the air in just the first two quarters amounting to a 21-7 lead at the half. The second half was more pain for the Bulldogs defense, as Dayton continued to march right down the field against the will of the Bulldog faithful who packed the small visitors side at Bronco stadium. Nederland's inability to defend the pass reflects mostly upon how young the secondary is. Another noticeable downfall seems to be the techniques being used while defending against a passing game. Most of the time, the defensive backs are not looking at the ball or the quarterback, they are focused on the receiver as they watch the receiver fly by them. For Nederland to have success against Lumberton next week and potentially in the playoffs, they will have to look to the mastermind of defenses, Coach Delbert Spell, to formulate a new scheme entering next week against a struggling, but pass-happy Lumberton team. PN-G Struggles Containing Williams, Jaguars PN-G's playoffs hopes diminished friday night as the Brandon Williams show rolled again for another big night against a down and out Indians team. PN-G falls to 3-3 in District 22-4A falling out of the race for the third playoff spot behind Nederland and LC-M. PN-G lost to both of these teams who are contending to make it past the regular season (Nederland is trying to do it for the 11th straight year). PN-G's ability to control their own destiny is no longer in their hands, and they would have to amass a lot of luck to make it to the playoffs. PN-G faces off against powerhouse Dayton next week at the Reservation for their final regular season game. Central improves to 5-1 in the district.

Rangers hire ex-A's assistant Washington as managerAssociated Press ARLINGTON, Texas -- Ron Washington was hired as manager of the Texas Rangers after 11 seasons as an Oakland Athletics coach, inheriting a team that last made the playoffs in 1999. "It's a done deal," Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said in an e-mail Monday. The Rangers planned to introduce Washington during an afternoon news conference. Washington's two-year contract includes two additional option years. Washington was chosen over four other candidates to replace Buck Showalter. The Rangers fired Showalter after an 80-82 season, their sixth losing season in seven years. The 54-year-old Washington becomes the Rangers' 17th full-time manager and first black manager. Washington had also been a candidate in Oakland to replace fired A's manager Ken Macha. He first interviewed last month and met with owner Tom Hicks, Daniels and other Rangers officials during another interview Sunday. "I was very impressed with his baseball knowledge and his insight into people," Hicks told the Dallas Morning News. Washington played parts of 10 seasons in the majors as an infielder for five teams. But his only managerial experience was two years at the Class A level in the New York Mets organization before his 11 seasons as Oakland's infield instructor and third-base coach. He was popular with Oakland players and was instrumental in the development of six-time Gold Glove third baseman Eric Chavez. The A's had the AL's top fielding team the past two seasons. Washington stresses fundamentals and communication and lets players be themselves. He takes over a team led by three-time All-Star shortstop Michael Young, two-time Gold Glove winner and slugging first baseman Mark Teixeira and Kevin Millwood. When Showalter was fired with three years left on his contract, Daniels said the Rangers needed a "different perspective." Showalter was known for his hands-on approach that led to some discontent in the clubhouse between the players and the manager. He was 319-329 in four seasons, and the Rangers never finished higher than third in the AL West. The New York Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks both won the World Series the year after Showalter left them. The other finalists for the Texas managerial job were Rangers bench coach Don Wakamatsu and Japan Series-winning manager Trey Hillman, an Arlington native and the Rangers' former director of player development. Both interviewed with Daniels and Hicks last week. Mets third-base coach Manny Acta and Phillies minor-league manager John Russell, a former Rangers catcher who caught one of Nolan Ryan's seven no-hitters, also interviewed but neither met with the owner. Wakamatsu has been the Rangers' bench coach the past four years and still has a year left on his contract in Texas. He is a candidate for the Oakland job, and the Rangers had given Oakland permission to speak with Wakamatsu if he wasn't their choice as manager. Copyright 2006 by The Associated Press
