  15. Hamshire-Fannett volleyball falls short KINGWOOD - Lacy Stone's kill booned across the net at the Columbus defense on Saturday, bringing the Hamshire-Fannett volleyball team a final ray of hope. With the Lady Horns facing elimination down 2-1 in their Class 3A area round playoff match against Columbus, Stone's score knotted both teams at 26 apiece late in Game 4. As was the case for much of the afternoon, however, Columbus had an answer. The Lady Cardinals capped two consecutive kills from Mandy Moeller and Elise Huskey to grab a 28-26 Game-4 win and end H-F's season with a 3-1 decision in the match. It was the Lady Longhorns' fourth straight appearance in the area round of the playoffs, and it proved to be a match defined by grit and determination. Columbus prevailed, 25-21, 18-25, 25-19, 28-26. "My girls showed a lot of heart coming back in several of the games," said Columbus coach Rhonda Magness, whose team trailed H-F by as many as 10 points in Game 4. "Our hats are off to Hamshire-Fannett. They (the Lady Horns) played a great match." Hamshire-Fannett ends its season at 23-10. The Lady Horns finished second in District 21-3A with an 11-3 record. Perhaps Saturday's difference maker was the ability of Huskey and Moeller to control the net for much of the match. Huskey finished with 23 kills while Moeller added 18. "For an entire season, we have been battling with our defense and reading tips by other teams, and tonight Columbus made some tips and our defense was not there," H-F coach Debbie Peltier said. "I tried to make some changes, but we just weren't there to cover the tips. Columbus has a very good ball club, and they never gave up." Columbus, which improves to 36-4 and will face Needville in the regional quarterfinals, played from behind in all three of its victories. The Lady Horns held a 20-10 lead in Game 4, but Columbus countered with seven straight points and an 18-6 run the rest of the way. Likewise, the Cardinals spurned a 16-12 deficit in Game 3 to win 25-19, and Columbus trailed 21-18 in Game 1 but finished by scoring the final seven points of the contest. "Heart has really been our central guiding for us all year," Magness said. "At the beginning of the match, it wasn't really there and then we found it." The Lady Horns were anchored by Carmon's 11 kills and 11 digs, while senior Cheyenne Craigen added another 10 kills and 27 digs. Hamshire-Fannett defeated Splendora 3-0 in the bi-district round last Tuesday. "This was our fourth trip in a row to the playoffs," Peltier said. "It's always exciting, and it's always good volleyball at this level. I'm very proud of the girls, and I'm especially proud of my seniors. They came on this year and produced."
  16. LC-M's Bean repeats as Class 4 Region III cross country winner HOUSTON - He did it again. For the second year in a row, Drew Bean of Little Cypress-Mauriceville won the Class 4A, Region III Cross Country title. Bean ran a personal best time of 15 minutes and 27 seconds Saturday to win the overall Class 4A title at North Harris College. "It feels good to win the title again," Bean said. "That was my fastest 5K time of the season, so I am very happy with my performance." It took Bean less than a mile to take the lead. And before it was all said and done, Bean established a 100-meter gap over second-place finisher Luis Pena of Elgin. Pena finished in 16:05.20. "I got out fast, so I just tried to stay relaxed and get into a rhythm," said Bean, who also won his second straight district title this season. "There were a couple of runners with me at the beginning of the race, but they began to slow down and I just kept going. I felt good today." Nederland's Phillip Rogers was among the group of runners who ran with Bean for the first mile. "We ran side by side for the first mile," Bean said. "We have been running together since the seventh grade, so I'm very happy that he got a medal and was able to qualify for state." Rogers picked up speed in the final 30 meters to hold off James Welin of Seven Lakes for third place in 16:11.04. "I thought I went out too fast at the beginning," Rogers said. "I began to slow down in the middle of the race, but I realized what goals I set for myself at the beginning of the season, and I just went after it." This will be Rogers' second appearance at the state meet. The last time Rogers made it to state was during his sophomore year. "It feels good to qualify for state," Rogers said. "I just wish my team could have qualified as well. This win gives me a lot of confidence, so my goal for state is to try and finish in the top 10." Nederland's Chelsea Yaws will join Rogers at the state meet. She is the only runner from the Nederland girls squad to qualify for state. She finished 10th overall with a time of 11:56.93. It will be Yaws' second appearance at the state meet. She qualified for state as a sophomore. "I'm very excited about going to state," said Yaws, who won the District 22-4A meet this year. "This race was extremely fast, and all of the team ran personal best times, but we didn't qualify for state as a team." Both the Nederland boys and girls teams placed fifth overall. The boys had a total of 185 points while the girls had 161 points. In Class 3A, Bridge City didn't quite have the success as in years past. The Bridge City boys and girls teams failed to qualify runners to the state meet. Ryan Kelly finished in 13th place to lead the Cardinals' team. He ran the race in 17:30.99. Morgan Broussard finished in 30th place to lead the Bridge City girls squad with a time of 12:43.36. The Bridge City boys finished in 16th place, and the girls finished12th. In Class 2A, Joe Dooley of Deweyville and Brittany Henson of San Augustine both finished in seventh place. Dooley ran across the finish line in 17:57.67, and Henson finished the two-mile course in 12:58.48. Shamika Singleton of Hemphill missed the state meet by one place. She finished in 11th place in 13:07.77. The top three teams and the top 10 finishers qualify for the state meet in Round Rock next weekend.

  20. Sosa eyes return to big leagues, 600 home runsAssociated Press SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- Sammy Sosa, 12 home runs shy of 600, said he wants to return to the big leagues in 2007 after taking a year off and contemplating retirement. "I feel good physically, and after a year of resting we are optimistic about making a decision soon about returning to baseball," the Dominican slugger told The Associated Press on Saturday. Sosa, 37, did not play in 2006 after rejecting a non-guaranteed offer of $500,000 from the Washington Nationals. But the outfielder, perhaps best known for his epic home run duel with Mark McGwire in 1998, said he is motivated to return. "I still have a lot of passion for the game and I'm in shape. I want to get to 600 home runs before saying goodbye," said Sosa. His agent, Adam Katz, has previously said Sosa probably was headed to retirement. Sosa, whose last season with the Baltimore Orioles ended with a .221 batting average and 14 home runs, said several teams have shown interest but did not specify which ones. The only player in major league history to have three seasons of at least 60 homers, Sosa testified before a congressional committee looking into steroids use by professional baseball players.
