  10. Region meet next race for cross country Without fail or hesitation, each member of the Ozen boys cross country team completed the three-mile course at the District 22-4A meet held at Doornbos Park last Thursday. Runners who finished early cheered on their teammates, but it wasn't until all of the Panthers were done did the team realize they had a chance to place in the top three overall. "Everyone on the team always gives it their all in a race," said Ozen junior Bradley Romar. "It was the district meet so we had to perform the best that we could." Romar was the first Panther across the finish line in 17 minutes and 15 seconds at the district meet. The junior finished in third place behind the two-time district champion Little Cypress-Mauriceville's Drew Bean and Nederland's Philip Rogers. It was an improvement for Romar, who finished in fourth place in the former District 20-4A last year. Ozen also improved overall from last year's third-place district finish. The Panthers racked up 58 points to finish second overall behind Nederland. Lumberton finished in third place with 86 points. "I am very happy that I placed at the meet," he said. "That was one of my goals for the season. My next goal is to try and make it to state." Romar will be joined by teammates Freddrick Granger, Joseph Bonner, Frederick Montes, Patrick Griffin, Kerry Bellard and Shein Leidy when they compete at 10:20 a.m. Saturday at the Class 4A, Region III meet at North Harris County College in Houston. "Last year was my first year working with them and they have improved with each year," said Ozen coach Roxanne Wilkins. "We compete in a really tough district and I was really excited when they placed last year. I expected to place again this year because everyone returned. I think they will perform well at regionals." The Panthers finished in 20th place overall at the regional meet last year. "We only have one senior this year so we have a young team," Wilkins said. "But we have competed against some tough Houston teams all season long and it has prepared us for the regional meet." The top three teams and the top 10 individuals will advance to the UIL State Championship Nov. 11 in Round Rock.
