JUCO player shot, in critical, after confronting groperAssociated Press FORT SMITH, Ark. -- A player for a championship junior college basketball team was shot in the head and chest after police say he confronted a man who was touching females inappropriately at a Halloween party Saturday night. Terrist Parramore, 18, of Fort Worth, Texas, was listed in critical condition Sunday night at Sparks Medical Center. Two people were arrested, officers said Sunday. Police say they found Parramore lying on the floor of a Ramada Inn banquet room after they answered a call concerning fights and underage drinking at a Halloween party near midnight Saturday. Police Sgt. Jarrard Copeland said Parramore's mother and other family members drove up early Sunday from Fort Worth to be with him in the hospital. Parramore plays for the junior-college sports program at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, which won the NJCAA Division I title last season. The two arrested Sunday morning were taken into custody on attempted capital murder charges and held without bond. One was identified as William Harold Steward III, 25. The other is a 16-year-old male, Copeland said. The teenager's name was not released. According to investigators, Steward was touching females at the party inappropriately and was confronted by Parramore. Investigators say the two exchanged words and Steward walked away but returned minutes later with the teenager and pointed to Parramore. "That's him," Steward reportedly said. Police say the 16-year-old then pulled out a handgun and fired several shots at Parramore. Copyright 2006 by The Associated Press

Celtics to wear black clover leaf in honor of AuerbachESPN.com news services The Boston Celtics will wear a black clover leaf on their uniforms for the upcoming season as a tribute to former coach and general manager Red Auerbach, who died Saturday of a heart attack at age 89. The clover will appear on the right side of the jersey and will be inscribed with the word "Red" in green lettering. The Celtics begin the season at home Wednesday against the New Orleans Hornets and are still formulating plans to honor Auerbach at the opener. Auerbach's family announced Monday that his funeral will be Tuesday in Falls Church, Va. Auerbach's 938 victories made him the winningest coach in NBA history until Lenny Wilkens overtook him during the 1994-95 season. Auerbach's nine titles as a coach came in the 1950s and 1960s -- including eight straight from 1959 through 1966 -- and then through shrewd deals and foresight he became the architect of Celtics teams that won seven more championships in the 1970s and 1980s. Auerbach was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1969. The jersey No. 2 was retired by the Celtics in his honor during the 1984-85 season. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Heckler banned for season after alleged racial slurESPN.com news services The NBA and the Orlando Magic on Monday banned for the season the fan whose alleged racial slur incited Houston Rockets center Dikembe Mutombo at a preseason game last week. Season-ticket holder Hooman Hamzehloui allegedly called Mutombo a "monkey" Thursday in the third quarter of the Rockets-Magic game. Mutombo yelled back at Hamzehloui and gestured from the court. Hamzehloui was ejected from the game. The league said Hamzehloui is also barred from attending games at any NBA arena this season. Orlando said it will refund his season-ticket payment. According to a report in the Orlando Sentinel, Hamzehloui, sent the Rockets center a letter of apology. Hamzehloui was contacted late Sunday by the newspaper and said he didn't know "using the word 'monkey' was bad." Mutombo "I would like to take a moment of your time to offer a complete and unconditional apology for my poor behavior, and in particular, my poor choice of words last Thursday night while attending the Houston-Orlando basketball game," the letter reads. "I am by no means a racist, and if you only knew me better you would never begin to have those thoughts. What I am guilty of is poor judgment in the use of words while doing what I do to many of the visiting team's players, 'heckle them.'" Mutombo said after the game he would go into the stands next time even if he got fined for it. NBA spokesman Tim Frank said no action was taken against Mutombo and the matter was closed. Hamzehloui also wrote that he would not attend another Magic game until Mutombo gives the team his approval and that he would donate $5,000 to a charity of Mutombo's choice. Hamzehloui also wrote that he wished to apologize in person.
