  6. Pirates look to finish drives in trip to Winnie Van Wade The Orange Leader DEWEYVILLE — This week, the Deweyville Pirates look to finish what they start as they travel to Winnie Friday to face the East Chambers Buccaneers. In a 38-6 loss to Anahuac last week, the Pirates (1-4, 0-1) held their own against the Panthers (4-1, 1-0), controlling the clock for over 32 of the game’s 48 minutes. However, the Pirates couldn’t quite finish and fell 38-6, despite nearly matching the Panthers in total yardage. The Pirates had the ball nearly 10 minutes on the game’s opening drive, running 18 plays, but couldn’t punch it into the end zone. “I can tell you, I was really pleased with the kids’ efforts all night long because Anahuac has some tremendous athletes,†said Deweyville coach Russell McDaniel. “We moved the ball well like we wanted too, we just couldn’t finish. We’re still making those young mistakes but it will get better. The kids understand what they’re doing wrong and right and they’re working extremely hard.†Senior Pirate running back Keeton Addison made a nice full return to the lineup against Anahuac after an ankle injury kept him out for the most part of the two previous games. Addison bulled his way to 112 yards on 22 carries against Anahuac and now has 392 yards for the season. Trey Craft also continues to shine at tailback after he rushed for 90 yards on 17 totes and scored against the Panthers. He now has 289 yards for the year and two TDs. Junior Michael Williams continues to grow into the quarterback spot. He’s proven that he’s had nice accuracy, completing 37-of-64 passes for 341 yards. “We’re so thrilled to have Keeton back because he’s such a great competitor,†said McDaniel. “Trey, he’s been doing a superb job and looks likes he’s improving every week. Hopefully we’ll be able to grind out some more tough yards against East Chambers.†East Chambers (3-2, 1-0) is coming off a 7-0 shutout of Buna to open its 23-2A slate. The Pirates’ defense will definitely have to focus on Bucs’ quarterback Hank Jones. Jones has completed 35-of-76 passes for 350 yards and three TDs and is the squad’s leading rusher with 469 yards and nine TDs on 97 carries. Tye LeBlanc has 208 yards on 41 totes and Jacoby Carrington has amassed 193 yards and a TD off 34 carries. Justin Hallmark is EC’s leading receiver with 14 catches for 184 yards and a TD. “Our schedule is tough right now and this is a game we really need to have,†said McDaniel. “East Chambers really made big plays to stop Buna last week. Buna, like us, had several opportunities in the red zone, but couldn’t cash in. I think we can move the ball well against anybody, we just need to start coming up with some points to show for it."

  13. BC gets critical 21-3A win over Silsbee in 5 Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — Becca Mathews has barely seen a full Bridge City volleyball team for over a week. The Lady Cardinals still did not have a full roster Tuesday yet Bridge City was healthy enough to take down Silsbee in five games to go to 2-0 in District 21-3A play. Bridge City, who was without Bria Thibodeaux, defeated Silsbee 25-20, 25-16, 20-25, 26-28 and 15-5. Sara McPherson had her first full day back in over a week on Monday, Emily Kosh and Hailey Tally missed time last week and Thibodeaux was still out with a foot injury. “It has been tough and we have not made any excuses,†Mathews said. “It has been tough to even do drills at practice. I am so proud of them right now. They never once give up. They almost gave me a heart attack tonight but they stepped up when it counted.†After basically cruising to a 2-0 lead, the Lady Cardinals let the Lady Tigers right back in the match. Bridge City committed 16 errors in the third game and 19 in the fourth to allow Silsbee to tie the match. The final game was nip/tuck to start until McPherson came to serve. McPherson, who missed a week’s worth of school with the flu, came to serve with Bridge City up 8-5 and never left the spot. She struck for eight straight service points, the last point coming off an ace. “Coach also works us so hard in practice and that helps us in matches like this,†McPherson said. “I felt tired several times but had to push through. Everyone of us helps makes this a team. We rely on each other to do our jobs.†Marlee Lopez led the match with 14 kills while Kosh had a match-high 28 assists. McPherson had 12 kills, eight aces and 17 digs while Jordan Royal added 10 kills and 12 digs. Brooklyn Hogden had 11 kills while Allison Angelle added nine digs. Maggie Stump finished with seven kills while Tally put in 11 assists. Chelsea Neely had a superb match for Silsbee with 13 kills while Tori Gardner had 14 assists before leaving the match due to an injury. Silsbee led Game 2 10-9 before McPherson stepped to serve. She struck for eight straight service points, including two aces, to push Bridge City up 16-11. The Lady Cardinals were up 21-14 when Royal came to serve and she came up big for Bridge City with six straight service points. Kosh and Lopez connected for the game’s final point. Bridge City was able to stay in control of Game 1 even with 12 errors. The Lady Tigers helped Bridge City out after committing three errors to end the game. “We have been down multiple points so many times this year and this team never quits,†Mathews said. “I always tell them that we don’t have to win every game except the next one. There are too many good teams in this district to get ahead of yourselves. They should be proud of themselves right now and get ready for Orangefield on Friday.†The Lady Cardinals travel to face the Lady Bobcats on Friday.

  15. Lady Bears make quick work of Lumberton Van Wade The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — Not looking ahead to their big showdown at Beaumont Ozen Friday, the defending District 20-4A champion Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears smashed the Lumberton Lady Raiders 25-16, 25-12, 25-17 at The Bear Cave Friday night to stay perfect for the District 20-4A season. Using an extremely balanced attack, the Lady Bears (23-6, 6-0) dismantled the Lady Raiders (2-4 in district) at every turn. Senior Christine Sicktich led the way at the net with a team-high 11 kills but several teammates were nipping at her heels. Senior Ashton LaVergne posted nine kills. Sophomore Megan Kemp, who, it seems, ups her game each and every week, poured out eight kills and three blocks. Senior Shelby Apperson pumped out six kills. Senior Amy Laughlin collected five kills and senior Elissa Tate had four kills and three blocks. Tate was superb with her service game as well, notching 15 points and two aces. Shelby Sanchez served up eight points and two aces while Sicktich added seven points and two aces. Junior setter Kellie Tilley set up the offense well and both Shelbi Tucker and Michelle Rigsby played well coming off the bench. “We knew we had to play well tonight because Lumberton is scrappy,†said LC-M coach Vicki Castino. “They (Lumberton) gave PN-G all they could handle last week so the kids knew they would have to play at a high level tonight.†Castino enjoyed LC-M’s nice, balanced arsenal Tuesday. “That’s the type of match we like to play, and that’s getting everyone involved,†said Castino. “We really worked it around tonight and had some nice sets. I’m really pleased with Kemp. For a sophomore, she just keeps getting better and better and had a wonderful night.†Kindell Johnston and Molly Jones led the Lady Raiders with five kills apiece while Rachel Kemp and Brett Powell both had four. James also served up nine points with an ace. The Lady Raiders led Game One 7-3 but the Lady Bears continued to claw their way back and after they got up 12-11, the Lady Bears scored 13 of the next 18 points behind the smashes of LaVergne and Apperson. In Game Two, the Lady Bears quickly stretched a 12-9 cushion to 20-9 as Sanchez scored seven straight service points and Sicktich had four kills in the spurt. Leading just 8-7 in Game Three, the Lady Bears, behind a strong effort by Kemp, went on a 9-2 spurt and held off a late Lumberton charge. The Lady Bears now turn their focus to their game at Ozen Friday. The varsity match will begin at 5:30 p.m. Ozen (6-0 in district) went on the road and stunned the third-place Port Neches-Groves Rock-A-Noos in three straight games Tuesday. Last season the Lady Bears clinched the 2008 20-4A title on Ozen’s homecourt after the Lady Panthers beat them at The Bear Cave in the first half of district.
