[Hidden Content] Astros take a blow Oswalt's wrist bruised as more ground lost in wild-card race It was only four days ago the Astros were sniffing the lead in the National League wild-card race, having put together an impressive stretch that had many believing great things were ahead. The Astros not only lost more ground in their tenuous playoff chase with a disheartening 3-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Monday night at Minute Maid Park, they lost their best pitcher to a bruised wrist in the process. Roy Oswalt was forced to leave following seven innings after he was hit on the wrist by a line drive off the bat of Ronny Cedeño. Oswalt, who finished the inning and was examined by team doctors after the game, isn't expected to be out for the long term. "It will probably be stiff, but right now we're thinking he's going to be able to make his next start," Astros manager Phil Garner said. Oswalt is listed as day-to-day, much like the Astros. In losing their third consecutive home game before a crowd of 37,260, they trail the Cincinnati Reds by four games in the wild-card standings and desperately need to get going if they are to stay in the playoff hunt. "We can't keep going south of .500," Garner said. "Somehow we have to find a way to score some runs. Our pitching's been pretty good. We gave up three runs, but we've got to score some runs. I don't care who's on the mound, you have to figure out a way to do it. We have to start making a run at .500." Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano (13-5) dominated the Astros for the fourth time this year, throwing eight scoreless innings. He allowed just four hits and struck out five while overcoming seven walks to improve to 3-0 with a 0.58 ERA against the Astros this year. "He's one of the premier pitchers in all of baseball," Astros catcher Brad Ausmus said. "He's a workhorse that throws 200 innings and has an ERA in the mid-3s. "He's goes 95 (mph) with movement. I don't think there's a team out there that wouldn't want him."

  17. [Hidden Content] Exciting volleyball starts today Some teams may be ready to play, while others may not. Many high school volleyball teams have had the opportunity to play in a few scrimmages over the weekend, but starting today teams play games that count. This is the first week that University Interscholastic League teams can play regular-season volleyball matches, and the schedule is dotted with area matchups, including West Brook facing Nederland at 7 p.m. and Central entertaining Orangefield. "Everybody is excited about the season," said Memorial coach Debra Arvie. "As always, we want to compete well. We want to make it to the playoffs so every game along the way helps." Memorial returns five players from last year's team. The Titans finished last in District 22-5A last season. "Despite the new realignment in our district, it is still going to be tough," Arvie said. "Playing in Class 5A is tough in itself, so we use regular season games to help us prepare for the district season." West Brook coach Rebecca LaBauve has taken the same approach this season. The first-year coach hopes to use regular season games to prepare for the District 21-5A season that is scheduled to begin Sept. 8. "The girls came out the first day of practice and were really excited about the season," LaBauve said. "They have really been working hard in practice because their ultimate goal is to make the playoffs." The Bruins return five players from last year's squad. "This group of girls that I have on the team has not made it to the playoffs since they've been here," LaBauve said. "My goal is to build the program up and get the Bruins back to the playoffs. I think in order to make it happen we will have to take it one game at a time." Pam Orsot is another coach who will take it one game at a time. After five players graduated from last year's Class 2A regional quarterfinalist team, the Kountze coach must rebuild a program that is known for making the playoffs every year. "I think every team was kind of rough when we played scrimmages last week," Orsot said. "But the scrimmages gave us a chance to see what we needed to work on before the season began." The Lions return only one player from last year's playoff team. "With only one player back from last season this is a rebuilding year for us," Orsot said. "But I have a lot of sophomores with big hearts and a lot of hustle so I expect us to be ready by district even with the young group that I have. I think we will still be able to make the playoffs."
