[Hidden Content] Volleyball scrimmages breed confidence BEAUMONT - Sometimes teams play a best-of-three game series, while others use a running clock format. Advertisement The score isn't official and game uniforms aren't worn, but most coaches believe pre-season scrimmages for high school volleyball teams do have significance. "Scrimmages give players the opportunity to gain confidence," said Ozen coach Shy Randle. "They are very important to the season because coaches get a chance to see what their teams need to work on before the season begins." Silsbee, Ozen, Central, West Orange-Stark, Kountze and Memorial all participated in preseason scrimmages at Ozen High School on Friday. All teams with the exception of Kountze return at 10 a.m. today to continue games at Ozen. Kountze travels to Nederland for a 9 a.m. scrimmage. "Scrimmages are a great way to let you know what your team needs to work on," said Central coach Angel Marsh. "I don't really pay attention to the score, but I do take notes on how many missed serves and hits we had in a game." Central returns only four players from last year's team, so Marsh realizes the importance of practice and preseason scrimmages. "We are a young team so we still have a few rough edges that we have to iron out," Marsh said. "But with any team the more you practice and play together the better you become." Despite Central missing the playoffs last season, the Jaguars were still able to improve from their 2004 record. "We really got off to a good season before the hurricane hit," Marsh said. "We won the silver division of the Jasper tournament and placed third in the YMBL tournament. But the hurricane hurt us. I lost a lot of girls, and I had to move up players from the junior varsity team for the district tournament last year." Teams in District 20-4A were forced to play a revised schedule that crammed four weeks of games into five days of competition. Nederland and Port Neches-Groves finished the tournament as co-district champions, with Ozen gaining the league's final playoff spot. "We only won five or six games in 2004, but we won 13 games last season," said Marsh, whose team opens the season against Orangefield on Tuesday. "I think this season we will continue to improve. We have a lot of hard workers on the team, and I think we will have a pretty good season." With only one player returning from last year's Class 2A regional quarterfinal team, Kountze coach Pam Orsot's main objective at scrimmages is to find out who has the best chemistry as a group on the floor. "We had five seniors graduate so we are in the rebuilding stage," Orsot said. "I am using the scrimmages to help me see what we need to work on in practice. It also gives me a chance to figure out the line ups and who needs to go where on the floor. I have a lot of sophomores with big hearts and lots of hustle." Memorial coach Debra Arvie likes her team to play in scrimmages because it gives it more contact with the ball. Memorial returns five players from last year's team. The Titans finished last in District 22-5A last season "A lot of my players don't play club ball so scrimmages give them the opportunity to get familiar with the game after time off," Arvie said. "My players do play in summer leagues so scrimmages give them the chance to work on their skills."

[Hidden Content] Lamar concludes first week of volleyball practice BEAUMONT - The Lamar University volleyball team, picked to finish second in the Southland Conference East Division finished its first week of practice on Friday. "It's been a good first week," Lamar coach Justin Gibert said. "We are way ahead of where we were at this point last year. Last year we didn't really put the team together for the first two weeks because we were working more on fundamentals." A year ago, Lamar brought in five freshmen. This year, there are six freshmen on the roster. LU returns eight players from the 2005 squad, led by all-conference performer Buchi Okoh. Also returning are juniors Molli Abel and Courtney Mitchell and sophomores Ashley Todd, Meagan Adams, Lauren Rush, Andrea Hamilton and LaKreshia Harmon. The freshman class of Kaci Brewer, Alex Brink, Ariel Drake, Lauren Holdorff, Adrianne Meengs and Dayna Norwood has pleased Gibert so far. "Some of the freshmen have been surprises," he said. "Some of them have come in and exceeded our expectations, while several others are going to take a little more time to develop." The Cardinals are coming off an 8-21 season in 2005. They were 6-10 in SLC play. This year, the SLC features a West and East Division and an eight-team tournament to conclude the year. Teams participating in the West Division are Texas-Arlington, Texas-San Antonio, Texas State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Stephen F. Austin. The East Division consists of Central Arkansas, Lamar, McNeese State, Nicholls State, Northwestern State and Southeastern Louisiana. The two divisions will remain in this format for two years. At the conclusion of the 2007 season, Stephen F. Austin and Lamar will flip-flop. South Lake Charles, La. defeats, D'Iberville, Miss. 1-0 WACO - South Lake Charles Little League completed its undefeated run through the Southwest Regional Tournament with a 1-0 win over D'Iberville, Miss., on Friday night before a live television audience on ESPN. With the victory, South Lake Charles advances to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., Aug. 18-27. Groves National Little League was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the tournament, falling to Lubbock Western 6-4 in seven innings on Wednesday. D'Iberville handed Groves its only loss in pool play, a 6-2 defeat on Tuesday. Groves didn't face South Lake Charles, which outscored its opponents 45-8 during the regional.

[Hidden Content] Ruth 16 Stars fall in opener The Port Arthur News MONTICELLO, Ark. – It wasn’t the start Mid-County’s 16-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars wanted, but at least they’ve got three more pool games to straighten it out. Mid-County made five errors on the infield, had two players picked off second base and stranded 12 runners Friday as North Kitsap, Wash., took advantage for an 8-3 win on the opening day of the Babe Ruth 16-year-old World Series. Up next for Mid-County is a 3 p.m. meeting today with a team from Syracuse, N.Y. After each team plays four pool games, the 12-team field will be cut to six for bracket play beginning Thursday. North Kitsap scored two runs in the top of the first on a two-run homer by James Smith and never trailed against Mid-County and pitcher Justin Richard. But Mid-County’s deficit was just 3-1 going into the final inning. North Kitsap scored five time in the top of the seventh. Four of the runs were unearned, with three coming on a home run by Jamaal Smith. Mid-County actually outhit its opponent 10-5 in the game with no player getting more than one of them. The Texans got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third, cutting North Kitsap’s lead to 2-1. Shae Campbell led off with a single, went to second on Adam Broussard’s bunt and third on Zeke Pedraza’s single. V.J. Bunner’s double scored Campbell and Chris Jones, the winning pitcher, walked Josh Cabra to load the bases with one out. Then Smith retired the next two batters to work out of the jam. Mid-County used a double play on a double-steal to get out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam of its own, but that was after three straight errors had upped North Kitsap’s lead to 3-1. After going down 8-1 in the top of the seventh, Mid-County scored one run on a pinch-hit double by Dillon Ford and an RBI single by Richard. Again, they had the bases loaded with one out. Again, North Kitsap retired the next two hitters, with relief pitcher Robert Jordan whiffing two batters to end the game.
