Free agents compete for Mavs' final roster spot By CHUCK CARLTON / The Dallas Morning News Former first-round pick Ndudi Ebi will be among four free agents competing for a Mavericks roster spot in training camp. The players and the team have reached agreements on training camp contracts. Ebi, 22, will be joined by 6-5 swingman Pat Carroll, 23, and two point guards, 6-2 Darius Washington, 20, and 6-0 Juan Jose Barea, 22. The four are vying for the 15th and final spot on the roster, assuming the team does not sign a veteran. "What you have are four young guys with upside who are worth investing in," president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson said. Ebi, a 6-9 forward who played at Houston Westbury Christian, jumped to the NBA from high school. He was taken 26th by Minnesota in 2003, three spots ahead of Josh Howard. But he played just 19 games in two seasons before being released in November. Ebi spent last season with Fort Worth in the National Developmental League and attended Hakeem Olajuwon's big man camp in Houston this week. "I think Ndudi was too young, too unprepared for the NBA the first time," Olajuwon told the Houston Chronicle. "Now I see stronger, more confident moves. ... I think he's ready." The Mavericks also are intrigued by the point guards. Washington was undrafted after his sophomore year at Memphis, where he was a two-year starter in a strong program. A scorer first, Washington is still learning his position. Barea is a more traditional point guard. He excelled at mid-major Northeastern (2,290 career points) and was impressive in three appearances for Puerto Rico at the Global Games. He must prove he can play against NBA competition. Carroll, who played at St. Joseph's, is the younger brother of Charlotte's Matt Carroll and has a similar game – including a nice perimeter shot. He rebounded from a serious shoulder injury to average 16.4 points for Houston in the Vegas Summer League.

Historical Note In Baseball's Past.............. Not that this is an unknown fact but it still remains interesting. On October 1st in 1961, Roger Maris hit his record breaking 61st home run. The pitcher that yielded that homer was Boston's Tracy Stallard.. On June 21st in 1964, Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Jim Bunning pitches a perfect game versus the New York Mets winning 6-0 on Father's Day. The losing pitcher for the Mets that day was Tracy Stallard. Yes little Johnny, lightening can strike twice in the same locker in history !!

Gatlin doping case takes new turn LONDON (AP) - Justin Gatlin could escape a lifetime ban if he testifies against his coach. By testifying against Trevor Graham, Gatlin would exercise the "substantial assistance" provision in the World Anti-Doping Agency's code, which reduces the ban by proving "he or she bears no significant fault or negligence" in the violation. The 24-year-old American sprinter faces the ban after a second positive doping test, but that could be reduced to eight years if Gatlin provides information against his coach. "Since we don't have any criminal investigative powers - like wiretaps, warrants for searching premises, etc. — it takes information coming to us from people aiming for a reduction in their own doping sentences," said general counsel Travis Tygart, who refused to comment on Gatlin or any other specific cases before USADA. "It's one way we can continue to actively pursue those involved in doping practices." Gatlin, the Olympic and world champion and co-world record holder in the 100 meters, tested positive for testosterone or other steroids April 22 after a relay race in Kansas. He denies knowingly using banned substances. Graham has claimed Gatlin was the victim of a vengeful massage therapist who rubbed testosterone cream on the sprinter's legs without his knowledge after the race. "If an athlete can provide information on individuals involved in doping conspiracies and can help us catch distributors or users of these drugs we would always welcome that evidence," Tygart said. After a 2003 positive test for modafinil, American sprinter Kelli White cooperated with USADA, providing information on key Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative players — including founder Victor Conte and her former coach Remi Korchemny. For her help, she received a two-year suspension. The International Association of Athletics Federations said Thursday it would investigate the activities of Graham in conjunction with USADA. Graham, banned by the U.S. Olympic Committee from its training facilities, has been involved with at least a half-dozen athletes who have received drug suspensions. He always has denied direct knowledge or involvement with drug use. But Graham helped launch the federal investigation of BALCO three years ago by anonymously mailing a syringe containing "the clear," a previously undetectable steroid, to USADA.

Firing Buck or Jon isn't fix By Randy Galloway / Fort Worth Star-Telegram August 11, 2006 FORT WORTH - For those angry enough to still care, your disgust with the Rangers is coming in loud and loaded. Stop the media coddling of Buck Showalter, you demand. This man must be fired. Now. And if not now, October for sure. Four years of nothing is enough. Let there be no more. OK, I hear you. And as someone normally in favor of a good firing, the local baseball manager has historically been the logical head to roll. I will not protest on Buck's behalf. Admittedly, however, I also haven't been able to work up a good mad over Showalter's work, therefore igniting a column campaign for his removal. If that's coddling, then forgive me, Father, for I have coddled. Just a guess, but the first guy to hit ink with a ''Fire Buck'' headline would probably receive more than a few approving yet discreet butt-pats from players in the clubhouse. By now, they are probably sick of Buck. But a long-standing personal Rule No. 1 in throwing around ''Fire So-and-So'' opinions is to always use an educated ear with listening to players. Consider the source. Players have their agendas just like the rest of us. And in some cases are even more vindictive and self-serving than us media rodents. Obviously, it's not going to be a happy clubhouse in Arlington starting tonight when the Rangers open a brief homestand against Seattle. The just completed tough road trip started in almost inspiring fashion, then quickly collapsed, although it ended with a 14-0 desperation win in Oakland on Wednesday afternoon. Still, at 5 1/2 games out of first, and behind two teams in the division, about all that's left of this season is finishing it without a disgraceful tank job. In a year when the AL West was as weak as we've seen it in forever, the Rangers won't even make September interesting. Buck has to be held accountable for that. So does Jon Daniels, who has to be judged on his general manager moves, and there were a bunch of those. Jon Boy is active, to say the least. But he hasn't been successful. And the blame game almost always ultimately falls on the players, although don't count me among those who breathlessly anointed Daniels' many moves, then said it was all on the players to respond. Talent-wise, this team had the look of .500 in early April, and has played at that level ever since. Jon Boy's trades, the good and the real bad, were never enough to change that. So when players don't play well, managers are fired. There is nothing new about that. But I tend to cut Buck some slack. Same with Daniels. The reasoning is that both are dealing from a short financial deck. It's still about the payroll. Payrolls matter in being competitive, and I'm not talking about the Yankees' dollars. We live in what is now the fourth-largest media market in the country. The Rangers' payroll is right around $68 million, which makes it 22nd among the 30 major league teams. That is not acceptable for our market. This payroll should be in the low 80s. Teams do win with payrolls in the Rangers' current range, but you've got to be real lucky for one season. The big spenders eventually wear you down. Hicks once overspent. Now he under-spends. And with attendance down at the ballpark this season, don't expect the payroll to expand for '07. The way I've got it figured, the Rangers are at least $12 million short in what a competitive payroll should be. I don't blame the manager for that, or the general manager. Fire Buck? If that's your opinion, I understand. But if I'm going to fire anybody, at the moment it'd be the owner.
