  8. Brenham ends LC-M's baseball season KINGWOOD - The Little Cypress-Mauriceville baseball team knew it was walking a thin line as it headed into the seventh inning on Thursday down one run against No. 1-ranked Brenham in the Class 4A regional quarterfinals at Kingwood High School. And with the Bears' backs against the wall, LC-M watched its season slip away as it scored no runs in the final inning in route to a 4-3 loss to Brenham in the single-game playoff. LC-M's Landon Womack carried the Bears' hopes on his shoulders as he stood at the plate with two outs, runners on first and third, and a 0-2 count against Brenham pitcher William Kankel. The third pitch from Kankel, though, was the game-ending strike as the Bears finished their season with a 29-6 record. "They made their school proud," LC-M coach Steve Griffith said of his team. "They made their coaches proud. They made their families proud. We just had a couple things happen that were tough to overcome. We were down early, and it's hard to run when you're down; it's hard to bunt and give up outs when you're down. They were just too good for us to overcome that lead, but we sure tried. We were 90 feet away." The Bears fell behind 4-0 early as the Cubs scored one run in the first inning and three in the second. LC-M shortstop Wes Schneider answered with a RBI single to center field that scored Clayton Ehlert in the top of the third inning to make it 4-1. In the bottom of the third, Ehlert took over on the mound for Womack, and in doing so Brenham connected on just one hit the rest of the way. The Bears closed the gap in the top of the fifth inning when second baseman Aaron Lemoine hit a home run to bring the score to 4-2. LC-M's final run of the night would come in the top of the sixth when third baseman Kyle Adams singled to left field to score Schneider. With the win Brenham advances to the regional semifinals with a 31-2 record. The Cubs last loss was on May 5 against The Woodlands of Class 5A. "The game ended with the tying run 90 feet away and the kids who came to the plate are really upset, but they've got nothing to be upset about," Griffith said. "Those (Brenham) guys are great pitchers. They're as good as anybody in the state. You have to give them credit."
