BC boys, OF's Williams win at Cardinal CC Classic Van Wade The Orange Leader VIDOR — As usual, Bridge City had an amazing day at the Cardinal Classic Cross Country Meet Saturday at Claiborne Park. However, Malia Cali, from St. Thomas Aquinas out of Hammond, La., stole the show. Cali, who was the Louisiana state champion in both the 3,200 and 800 meters last May, covered the two-mile terrain in a stunning 11 minutes, 24.99 seconds, easily smashing the meet record as she captured the Girls Class 5A-4A division. Orangefield’s Kayla Williams had a good morning as well, winning the girls’ 3A-and-Under Division with a time of 13:26.46. The Bridge City boys tied Huffman for the 3A-and-Under Division title but the Cardinals took home the first-place trophy with their sixth fastest runner finishing higher than Huffman’s. Huffman’s Happy Singh nabbed first place with a time of 16:34.28 over the three-mile course. Tim Cude led the Cardinals, finishing third with a 17:06.90. He was followed by teammates Kirby Shepherd (sixth, 17:37.86); Aaron Lejeune (10th, 18:28.52); Sawyer Hogan (11th, 18:35.77); Jose Chavez (12th, 18:55.07); Luke Hebert (13th, 18:56.12) and Armando Chavez (17th, 19:24.73). Cali helped lead St. Thomas Aquinas to the 5A-4A girls title as Aquinas finished with 35 points, nipping second-place Bridge City (44), which opted to run in the higher classification. Mary Nguyen paced the Lady Cardinals, placing seventh with a 13:11.14. She was followed by teammates Megan Shockley (eighth, 13:14.08); Jessica Franklin (ninth, 13:37.18); Ariel Chesson (14th, 14:23.54); Courtney Hebert (15th, 14:26.90); Lisa Huynh (17th, 14:37.38); Arron Valencia (19th, 14:43.44) and Alex Holland (21st, 14:47.26). Hard to say, still may be a year away but they have improved and will not come in last this season!

I'm not surprised. This has always been a big Rivalry, LC-M used to play WO-S closer than anyone even in the State Championship games in the past. WO-S could have ran away with it when they had the 28-7 lead but each time they were driving the great REFS that the area has this year threw holding calls.
