  5. Triangle being considered for Continental Baseball League team DALLAS — The Golden Triangle is one of 42 areas under consideration as a candidate for the start of a new professional independent baseball league called the Continental Baseball League. League Chief Executive Officer and President Ron Baron of Dallas made the annoucement to The News on Monday afternoon. The league indicated in a release that it intended to field a minimum of six to 10 teams with a 13-week, 80-game schedule beginning next summer, starting on Memorial Day. Forty-two cities are under consideration from eight southwest and midwest states, including 17 areas in Texas. All cities under consideration will have populations in the range of 80,000 to 190,000 residents and are areas located more than 25 miles from a current major- or minor-league city. The CBL also is said to be targeting cities in Colorado, Louisiana, Missouri, New Mexico, Kansas, Arkansas and Oklahoma. Between now and the end of the year, Baron and three business associates plan to meet with groups from targeted communities to determine which cities will be included in the initial CBL campaign. Baron brings more than 20 years of experience in sports law and counseling to this endeavor. He founded the Center for Sports Law and Risk Management, Inc., in Dallas in 1988. His business partners include former major league outfielder Jay Johnstone, former major league executive Bob Ibach and league marketing director Laura Kath. Baron indicated the price to own a CBL franchise would be $100,000 per team with player payrolls not exceeding $120,000 per season. No player would make more than $10,000 and would earn less than $4,000. Baron’s marketing research has aimed its interest in areas with strong youth, high school and junior college baseball programs, as well as areas with strong university programs. “I want to have a league where dads and moms can take their children out for an evening and make it affordable so that they can come back again and again during the summer,†the 48-year-old Baron was quoted as saying in a release. “You look around at the big league parks and you’re lucky if you can attend one game each summer. Families just can’t watch baseball anymore like we could when I was a kid.†Suggested ticket prices will range from $5 to $12 and fans reportedly will find most concession items considerably lower than those at most major- and minor-league ballparks today. Other Texas areas under consideration are Tyler-Longview, Bryan-College Station, Waco, Abilene, Galveston-Clear Lake, Texarkana, Killeen-Temple, Odessa, The Woodlands-Kingwood, Sugar Land-Fort Bend County, Denison-Sherman, Kerrville, New Braunfels, Greenville and Garland.
  6. Memorial Titans football set for spring finale Ronnie Thompson doesn’t know who will win his first Memorial High spring football game. He doesn’t even know how he’ll keep score. “It’ll be Red versus White,†he says, “but the team won’t be completely divided. Our offense will never lose the ball. They might get turned around, but we’ll keep the unit intact.†Memorial’s spring game will be played at 4 p.m. at the school’s auxiliary field as Port Arthur still doesn’t have working lights at any of their football fields. The scrimmage will last about 90 minutes, Thompson says, and will be run by regular TASO officials under game-like conditions, with the exception of the kicking game. But the Titans did not conduct a draft, splitting their best players. This scrimmage will be offense vs. defense. “We’re going to keep continuity,†Thompson said. “We’ll have the No. 1 offense vs. the No. 1 defense, JV vs. JV, No. 2 offense vs. No. 2 defense.†About 100 players have taken part in the month-long drills, getting acquainted with the new coach who used to be the old coach, for Thomas Jefferson. “They’re starting to make a lot of progress in many areas,†he said. “They’re practicing extremely well. That has to be carried over to scrimmages, and then from scrimmages to gametime. “We’re getting that first part (from practices to scrimmages) done pretty well.†Besides his quarterbacks — Davon Lewis, Harry Brown, Alonzo Revuelta and ninth-grader Jerrell Alexander — Thompson has found a lot to like about his new team. He mentions running backs Patterson Clay, Brent Newcost and Michael Haines; receivers Bryon Martin, Glenn Windom, Freddie King, Rashaud Brown and Ronald Ward; and offensive linemen Jonathan Vernon, Ronald DeJohn and Larry Oliver. Defensively, linemen Charles Jacobs and Darius Leveige have stood out, as well as linebacker Jordan Charles and defensive backs Anthony Cockrell, David Whitmore and Zack Gallow. Thompson’s goals for today’s spring game are modest. “No injuries and everybody playing,†he says.

  10. The Beaumont Enterprise home : news : sports news : outdoors Toledo Bend lake level is rising; big snapper bite offshore Things are looking much better on Toledo Bend after a long dry spell and some very low water levels. In fact, if you're looking to catch a mess of bream this is the place to be right now. Lisa McDaniel, at Holly Park Marina on T-Bend, said they have been getting lots of rain within the past several days. She said the lake is on the rise. They got about 4 inches last Saturday. That was followed up by another downpour on Wednesday. McDaniel says the lake is about 31/2 feet low. "Things are looking a lot better now that the lake level is coming up," said McDaniel. "We're getting good reports on bream, crappie, bass and big stripers." Anglers on the lake report catching largemouth bass to 61/2 pounds on watermelon colored lizards in 3 to 4 feet of water. McDaniel says white spinnerbaits are good in the coves in 4 to 6 feet of water. The crappie are best over baited holes on live minnows. But a number of anglers report that strolling tube jigs in black/white or chartreuse/white is the best way to fill a cooler with these tasty fish. The big news on T-Bend is that bream are moving to the beds. A fisherman at Holly Park said he was out Wednesday and used crickets and red worms to catch a good stringer of bluegills. But he said the big ones have not moved up in numbers. Striper fishing is good along the Sabine River channel, about mid lake, on live perch and white Bomber Striper Jigs. McDaniel said one of their guides brought in a 16-pounder this week. The forecast for the weekend is calling for more rain beginning today. Apparently, we'll have a weak cool front move in and maybe stall. If that's the case, we might have a repeat of last Saturday with lots of rain, thunderstorms and wind. We still need several inches of rain to bring the big East Texas lakes back up to normal level. The surface water temperature on both T-Bend and Sam Rayburn has been anywhere from 70 to 73 degrees the past few days. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department reports that Sam Rayburn is clear and just over a foot low. Largemouth bass are fair on chartreuse/white spinnerbaits, crankbaits, Rat-L-Traps and on pumpkinseed jerkbaits over grass. Crappie are good on minnows and blue tube jigs, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department report. Trout fishing along the coast is still great one day and slow the next. Reds are good along the jetties on jigs and live finger mullet. I've had a lot of reports from Sabine Lake anglers. The best action for trout has been on the upper end of the lake. That's where trout are under the birds one hour and gone the next. The most reliable bite has been under two or three terns. Trout under the birds are being caught on anything from a Corky to jig tails. Best colors are white/chartreuse, red/shad or limetreuse. I also had one good trout fishing report from the upper end of the south shoreline on Wednesday. Both trout and reds are good at the Sabine jetties. Over the past several days I've caught both on tails, Traps and a Swim'n Image. The best bite has been in pockets of green water for trout. Reds are best along the wash out gaps of the rocks. On East Bay, the trout bite has been very unpredictable. Hanna's Reef has been great one day, dead the next. You just have to move around a lot. Numbers of reds are improving in the south shore marsh, as are flounder. The offshore bite is fantastic for red snapper, big ling and kings. Capt. Tony Langston, with William's Party Boats in Galveston, put 83 fishermen on 200 red snapper to 20 pounds on a trip out this week. Patrick Lemire reports that the four heaviest snaps weighed 16 to 20 pounds. They also iced 181 vermilion snapper, 39 spadefish, 18 triggers, 51 blue runners and four amberjacks. That's your basic haul. Langston said they were fishing about 50 miles out in 115 to 130 feet of water over rock formations. Most of the catch was made on cut squid or whole Spanish sardines. The National Data Buoy Center is calling for southerly winds through the weekend to 15 knots, with 2 to 3 feet seas. If you'll be heading offshore definitely keep an eye on the weather. It could get nasty in a hurry as the front gets closer to the coast on Saturday.
