  9. Sabine Refuge closed until further notice The Sabine National Wildlife Refuge is closed until further notice. Typically, the refuge opens March 15, but last weekend I got a tip the refuge was actually closed despite no presence of signs or information to the contrary. As it turns out, refuge officials put out ìrefuge closedî signs last week and I came across them in Willow Bayou. There are also signs at other points along the Louisiana shoreline of Lake Sabine. Louisiana officials said damage caused from Hurricane Rita is the reason for the closure and there is no date yet set to open the refuge. North Sabine - Trout action has bee fair in the channel around the islands on live bait, Catch Jrs. and Corkies. Redfish are scattered. Flounder are fair on the Louisiana shoreline on live mud minnows fished on incoming tides. South Sabine - Trout are fair on live bait and plug and firetiger-colored / eel imitations fished over the reef. Flounder are fair on live mud minnows around the causeway bridge area on live mud minnows fished around the yacht basin. Very few reports of redfish. Sabine Pass - Angler John Jeffries reports the jetties are producing lots of sheepshead on shrimp fished around the big rocks on the Louisiana side and south of the Texas Cut on the west jetty. Redfish are good on mullet. A few trout are starting to show up and take plastics and topwaters fished early on calm days. Capt. Ryan Warhola reports excellent catches of wahoo and amberjack at the Flower Gardens. Bolivar - North End Bait reports the surf has been fair for redfish, sheepshead and black drum on cut bait. A few flounder are coming through the pass and taking live mud minnows. Toledo Bend - Texas Parks & Wildlife Department officials report very little action due to low water levels. Tournaments have been moved to Rayburn Lake. Rayburn Lake - Guide Lynn Atkinson reports largemouths are coming in the back of the coves on senkos, whacky worms and spinner baits. Colors have been watermelon red pumpkinseed, green pumpkin, and Watermelon red Green Flake. Crappie are showing up around the bridges on live shiners. A few are starting to move up shallow in preparation to spawn. Sabine River - Angler Gerald Burleigh reports catfish are hit and miss in the bayous on cut bait on the first hour or so of moving tides. Small flounder are good around the Outfall Canal on shad and finger mullet. A few stripers are still showing up around Burtonís Ditch and taking plastics. 10. Old high school baseball rivals Brad Sullivan and Kyle Stutes could face off again this summer in the California League. Sullivan, a Nederland native and No.. 1 draft pick by the Oakland A's in 2003, and Stutes, a Port Neches-Groves product and high draft pick by San Diego in 2004, were assigned by those major league organization to their respective teams in the "high A" league. Stutes will be with the Lake Elsinore Storm, part of a steady progress through the minors after going 1-2 with a 2.42 ERA in 45 relief appearances in a "low A" league last year. Sullivan, a starter with the Stockton Ports, is trying to jumpstart a career stalled the last two summers by injuries. Also in "high A" (at Greenville, S.C.) will be Lumberton-ex Clay Buchholz, last year's 42nd overall pick by the Red Sox. After going 12-6 as a starter and earning a spot in the Class A all-star game last year, Nederland native J esse Floyd is starting this season at the San Francisco Giants' AA franchise in Norwich, Conn. Brian Sanches, another pitcher from Nederland, is at AAA Scranton-Wilkes Barre, Pa., after just missing the cut with the Philadelphia Phillies. He finished off a scoreless preseason with an inning and a third of shutout pitching for the Phillies in an exhibition win over Boston Sunday. Other area players starting the season in the minors include former major leaguers Ben Weber (at AAA Syracuse), Jason Tyner (at AAA Rochester) and Chip Ambres (at AAA Omaha). Weber and Tyner's new teams are both in the International League. Omaha is in the Pacific Coast League.
  11. www.panews.com Central's Fisher makes most of hurricane's wrath Keith Fisher had big plans for his senior season of high school basketball, but being considered for the James Gamble Awards was never one of them. Things changed for a lot of folks last August 29, the day Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast and flooded New Orleans. Since then, Fisher and his family have been making the best of a bad situation. They've fared pretty well, in fact. "Some people were unfortunate, but we came out of this thing truly blessed," said Rhonda Joseph, Fisher's mom. Fisher made a quick and successful transition from St. Augustine High in New Orleans to Central High in Beaumont, where his family has settled. "Beaumont's been good to us," Joseph said one afternoon this week as she watched her son, an all-district point guard for Beaumont Central, practice with the other Gamble Award finalists for Friday night's all-star game between the Gamble finalists and a Houston Select team. "We've made a lot of friends. We love it here." Calvin Rice, Central's coach, loved coaching Fisher. "He was one of my key players," Rice said. "The addition of him probably helped me win 10 more games than we would have without him. He's the kind of kid you like to coach. "If I could have had 15 Keith Fishers on my team, that's what I would have wanted." Fisher said he wished he could have helped Central go beyond a one-point loss to Forest Brook in the first round of the playoffs. But, overall, things have been all positive. "Even though it's been a crazy year, a lot of good stuff has happened," he said. "I adjusted well to school and things, better than I thought I would. I think I had sort of a successful year with basketball." Joseph said her extended family of 15 fled New Orleans and spent four weeks in Beaumont's Motel 6 before Hurricane Rita chased t hem to Fort Worth for a couple of weeks. Back in Beaumont, they stayed in a church shelter before finding the apartment that Fisher, his mom, dad and 7-year-old sister Mikayla live in now. The rest of the family has returned to Louisiana. "We stayed because of school," Joseph said, "and it being Keith's senior year. His school was under water, so they didn't reopen." Fisher's family lived in Luling, a New Orleans suburb on the west bank of the Mississippi River that escaped the worst of the hurricane's damage. Joseph said the family is now renting out their home to a less-fortunate neighbor. "We have plans to move back this summer, but it depends on what he does about school," she said, indicating her son. Fisher hasn't landed a college scholarship yet and his size -- he's 5 feet, 9 inches tall -- may be working against him. But everything else is working in his favor. For instance, his old high school basketball program back in New Orleans turned out several pros, including an undersized point guard named Avery Johnson. Now Johnson is the head coach of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks. St. Augustine High coach Bernard Griffith, with no team to coach this year, was hired by Johnson to be an assistant with the Mavericks. Griffith has been working in his spare time on Fisher's behalf and plans to introduce Fisher to the coaches at SMU and North Texas. Also, Fisher's dad, Neal Joseph, a contractor who spends his work week on rebuilding projects in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi, has put together an AAU team that includes other unsigned high school seniors and has them competing i n showcase tournaments. "I probably would have been doing the same things if I was in New Orleans, but it's easier in Texas, because Texas is so big there's a lot more going on," Fisher said. "I can get more exposure (to college coaches) than I had in Louisiana." Along with all his new friends and teammates, Fisher has kept in touch with his hometown friends by phone. And he's opted to take advantage of a special ruling that would allow him to get his high school diploma from St. Augustine High. He's going back home in June for a graduation ceremony and reunion celebration. He's not sure if he'll stay. "I wouldn't mind going to college here in Texas," he says. "Whatever works out for me."
  12. North Sabine---The Intracoastal around Stewts and Sydney Islands has produced some nice trout on Catch Jrs. and mullet. Redfish are fair to good in East Pass on cut bait. Flounder are slow overall. South Sabine---Drifting the reef is producing trout up to three pounds on firetiger colored plastics and live mud minnows. Flounder are fair on mud minnows and chartereuse/white plastics fished around the Yacht Basin. Sabine Pass---Flounder fishing has been fair to good on live mud minnows fished around the Pilot Station. The jetties are very good for black drum and redfish on shrimp.
