  1. I can promise you they could stop it with a week of practice under Coach Thompson!
  2. Evans a quiet assassin for ’Cats Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — Derrick Evans does not like the spotlight. The Orangefield senior does not care if his name is ever printed in The Orange Leader. He only wants to win. Evans’ name was in the spotlight this past Friday when he scored two touchdowns on two rushes against East Chambers. Instead of gloating like a lot of players seem to do in sports these days, Evans kept it simple on Wednesday. “That was nice but a win would have been better,†Evans said. Orangefield coach Brian Huckabay loved that answer from one of his highlight players. “That is the perfect answer,†Huckabay said. “That is exactly what we preach as coaches. Derrick epitomizes what a team player is. He is not worried about being an individual and his stats.†Evans can do a lot for the Bobcats. He can set up as a running back, a receiver and also stands in as Orangefield’s kicker. Evans is in his third year starting for the Bobcats. He caught eight passes for 111 yards in 2008 and kicked 10 extra points and two field goals. “It feels really good to be a senior,†Evans said. “I really don’t like the spotlight to be on me. I feel really good about this team this year. The atmosphere is a lot different than years past.†Huckabay knows Evans could very well be a major key in the Bobcats coming up with a playoff run this season. “We hope he has a big season,†Huckabay said. “He is one of those guys who can make a couple of big plays a game. We are not a big-play offense but he is that guy that is going to keep defenses honest. He is a very quiet and unassuming player. He is a smart kid who has learned the game quick. Derrick can go unnoticed but when he gets his hands on the ball, he can make big plays.†Evans now hopes the Bobcats are ready to prove some experts wrong in 2009. “We have to keep working hard and I think we can do some good things,†Evans said. “I like being the underdog team so we can surprise some people. I have enjoyed my years here at Orangefield and would not have wanted to be anywhere else.â€

  6. Lady Bears take down Orangefield in three Van Wade The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — While the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears have had their eyes on Sept. 8 as their non-district schedule approaches the end, the Orangefield Lady Bobcats have been playing “up†in their non-district slate. LC-M got their second win of the season over Orangefield Tuesday night at Bobcat Gym but both teams got what they wanted out of the match. Coach Vicki Castino’s Lady Bears notched a 25-13, 25-16, 25-14 victory and will face Bridge City on the road Friday before opening up District 20-4A play next Tuesday in a “war†at home against the Port Neches-Groves Rock-A-Noos. The Lady Bobcats will not start District 21-3A play until Sept. 22 against West Orange-Stark but Coach Kristin Holbrooks’ young squad has played a monstrous non-district schedule against the likes of 4A teams like LC-M, Nederland, Beaumont Ozen, Lumberton and Vidor to have them solidly prepared for 21-3A battles. On Tuesday night, senior Lady Bear Christine Sicktich had an outstanding match overall, posting 16 points, two aces and 11 kills to pace LC-M (13-5). Shelby Apperson contributed seven kills for LC-M. Ashton LaVergne and Amy Laughlin added five kills apiece while Elissa Tate had four. Tate also served up eight points and two aces and Allison Walker had eight points and two aces. Shelby Sanchez played excellent defense for the Lady Bears and notched six points and three aces. Kalyn Harkness had seven points and an ace while Kellie Tilley had a good defensive effort and Michelle Rigsby had two kills. For the Lady Bobcats, freshman Rylie Granger and senior Aimee Scales led the way with four kills apiece while Carly Rucker and Ashlyn Lopez added three apiece. Ashlee Broussard led Orangefield’s service game with five points and an ace while Kassidy Hayes had four points. The Lady Bears jumped onto a 10-3 cushion in Game One and finished it off with 15 of the final 25 points. Orangefield grabbed an early 6-4 lead in Game Two but the Lady Bears went on a 8-1 spurt to go up 12-7 and controlled the final half of the game. The Lady Bobcats keptit close early in Game Three, trailing 11-9. LC-M was able to extend it to 18-13 and then ran away with seven of the game’s final eight points. The Lady Bears will visit Bridge City Friday with the varsity starting at 4:30 p.m. while the Lady Bobcats will entertain Nederland.
  7. Lady Cardinals shackle Kirbyville in four Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — It was not the prettiest win but it was a win. The Bridge City Lady Cardinals defeated the Kirbyville Lady Wildcats in four games by a score of 25-12, 25-21, 23-25 and 25-16. The Lady Cardinals (5-4) were led by Sara McPherson who poured in 14 kills and four aces. It was McPherson who made sure Bridge City would not have to deal with a fifth game. McPherson went to serve with the game 3-2 in favor of the Lady Cardinals and tallied nine straight service points to put Bridge City up 12-2. She had four aces in the run. Emily Kosh had a match-high 25 assists while Allison Angelle led everyone with nine digs. McPherson put in six. Brooklyn Hogden and Marlee Lopez each had nine kills for the Lady Cardinals while Jordan Royal had six and Maggie Stump had five. The Lady Cardinals were up 17-10 in the first game when Kosh went on a streak of six straight points to make it 23-10. The first game ended when Kosh set McPherson for the final point. Bridge City went up 3-0 in the second game and but was unable to ever really but away Kirbyville. The Lady Wildcats took their first lead of the entire match at 21-20 after four straight Lady Cardinals’ errors. Bria Thibodeaux came to serve for Bridge City with the game tied 21-21 and she never let Kirbyville back on serve. Thibodeaux hit for four straight points, including an ace. A final Kirbyville error gave Bridge City a 25-21 victory. It was Kirbyville who took quick 3-0 before Stump put Bridge City up 4-3 with two straight kills. The Lady Cardinals remained up and even held a 19-14 lead after a Lady Wildcats’ shot went out of bounds. Kirbyville then started to take advantage of several Bridge City errors and tied the game at 23-23 when a Lady Cardinals’ shot hit the net. Kirbyville went up 24-23 when a Bridge City hit went out of bounds and the Lady Wildcats took Game 3, 25-23, when Hope Cucancic had a kill. The fourth game was all Bridge City after McPherson’s long run even after Kirbyville clawed back to within seven on two separate occasions. Bridge City will now entertain Little Cypress-Mauriceville on Friday.

  15. Hundreds of fans turned out for the annual “Meet the Bears†community pep rally Monday night at Bear Stadium to support the students who participate in Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School fall athletics. Randy Crouch, Bears football coach and athletic director, told the crowd there is a renewed enthusiasm for all sports and he believes all athletes, students and fans will exude class in all sports this year.
  16. Local standouts walk on to Lamar football Van Wade The Orange Leader BEAUMONT — Former West Orange-Stark standout quarterback Andre Bevil will have some Orange County company in the Lamar University football program as four local players landed on the Lamar football roster as walk-ons. Lamar head coach Ray Woodard released the new roster on Monday. Bevil, competed at Navarro Junior College for two seasons before transferring to Lamar. At Navarro, Bevil completed 65-of-134 passes for 1,062 yards. As a senior at WO-S, Bevil completed 125-of-195 passes for 2,069 yards and 25 touchdowns. Making the team from our area as walk-ons includes Orangefield’s Jeremy Granger, Little Cypress-Mauriceville’s Joseph Viator, Bridge City’s Patrick Carlton and Deweyville’s Blake Peveto. Granger was The Orange Leader’s Athlete of the Year in 2008. As a senior Bobcat, Granger rushed for 713 yards and 16 touchdowns on 120 carries and was also an All-District selection in basketball and also qualified for the 3A Region III track meet in the discus. Granger (6-2, 250) is projected to play fullback for the Cardinals. Viator (5-7, 195), The Leader’s Defensive Most Valuable Player in 2007, after making over 120 tackles for the Battlin’ Bears, is listed as a cornerback on Lamar’s roster. Carlton (6-2, 245), a three-time All-District center for the Cardinals, is listed as an offensive lineman and Peveto, All-District at Deweyville, is listed as a 6-3, 195-pound linebacker.
