  8. One of the more successful seasons in recent years for breakthrough teams, the 2005-06 high school basketball season was one for the scrapbooks. Be sure to cherish it. Because the UIL's biennial realignment that goes into effect next season seems guaranteed to blow in plenty of changes for the next two roundball campaigns. Let's celebrate the good times. * In Class 4A, Lumberton's girls, coached by former Thomas Jefferson assistant Charlie Wilson, not only made it to the third round of the playoffs for the first time, but made it all the way to the state tournament. The Ozen Panthers again dominated the boys' side of the district, winning their sixth straight league title (four in 20-4A) and going farther in the post-season than any other 4A club. Also in 4A, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville boys returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2001 and the Port Neches-Groves girls got closer than they've ever come to the playoffs, a third-place tie. * In Class 3A, West Orange-Stark's boys broke through to the state tournament, the WO-S and Orangefield girls continued their battle for district (and Orange County) supremacy and the Bridge City boys made the playoffs for only the second time in school history. * Among the smaller schools, the Kelly boys won their third straight TAPPS title and Beaumont Cathedral's boys made their first state tournament. The Kountze girls made it three trips to state in four years and Kountze and East Chambers boys both made it to the 2A regional tournament, where eventual state champion Arp beat them both. The expected good news from realignment is what Port Arthur Memorial and Beaumont West Brook ought to find in the new District 21-5A. No longer should there be a scenario like the last two years, when both Kingwood and Westfield from 22-5A squared off in the Region III final. Trading the Spring schools (Westfield and Spring High) in for up-and-comers Channelview and Atascocita should be a big break, not to mention the fact that four teams will go to the playoffs in 5A beginning next year. The two-year playoff drought for Port Arthur teams, along with a five-year postseason absence by the West Brook boys, could be things of the past. Given the recent history of school politics in both Beaumont and Port Arthur, it wouldn't be the world's biggest surprise, though, if neither David Green at Memorial and Sam Simon at West Brook are around to see the new district alignment. And Memorial graduated a lot of talent in Dominique Keller, etc., as well as most of its varsity experience. The Port Arthur girls, meanwhile, are poised to take advantage of the new district with a roster full of experienced underclassmen. Coach Joseph Fonteneaux says he thinks a district title is possible for his squad that's finished in the second division the past two years. The local 4A scene will be tougher for teams like the LC-M boys and the PN-G girls with the addition of Dayton. Perhaps even Ozen might face a challenge. And in 3A, a new district that adds Silsbee, Jasper and Kirbyville to playoff teams West Orange-Stark, Hardin-Jefferson and Bridge City means the Cardinal basketball faithful may be in for another long playoff wait. And the girls' playoff fight figures to be crowded as well. Kountze and East Chambers will have to work harder with Buna and Anahuac falling to 2A and Warren moving over. Ditto for Class A schools like Evadale and Sabine Pass now that West Hardin has dropped. On the flip side, some teams seem primed for repeats. The Lumberton girls, for instance. The Kelly boys have a talented young team around J'Covan Brown and should be ready for another private-school run. West Orange-Stark has its big man, Richard Netherly, back and he promises to be better. But a bigger district means an earlier start to league play and coach Doug McCarter may find himself scrambling early on with talents like Earl Thomas likely away from the team because of the football playoffs. How will it all pan out? They say that's why they play the games. can't wait until it's time to throw the ball up and start again.
