Charlotte picked as site of NASCAR Hall of Fam CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Hall of Fame for NASCAR's greatest will be built in downtown Charlotte, within miles of the race shops and sprawling mansions that make the region an epicenter of the sport, NASCAR and city officials said today. The selection of Charlotte as site for the $107.5 million hall ended a yearlong race against four other cities that saw the city's leaders and tourism officials campaign hard for an attraction expected to lure hundreds of thousands of NASCAR fans. "In the end, you look at what's going to best in the long run," NASCAR chairman Brian France told a crowd of about 1,000 people at the city's convention center. "I'm happy to tell you today the NASCAR Hall of Fame is going to be right here in Charlotte, N.C." Charlotte's proximity to the heart of the sport was cited repeatedly as a reason to put the hall in the city. Lowe's Motor Speedway, in suburban Concord, is home to the longest race on the Nextel Cup circuit, the Memorial Day weekend Coca-Cola 600, and has long hosted NASCAR's annual all-star race. Nearly all of the top race teams are headquartered in the cities and towns north of the city, and many top drivers own luxury condominiums in downtown Charlotte or palatial homes on nearby Lake Norman. In billboards and bumper stickers distributed as part of the city's campaign for the hall, officials boasted, "Racing was built here. Racing belongs here" and "We Eat, Sleep & Breathe Racing." The news came as a disappointment to finalists Daytona Beach, Fla., and Atlanta, where city and state leaders hoped the sought-after attraction would become an anchor of the city's downtown tourism initiative. "As a guy, I'm disappointed. They decided to marry the girl next door," said Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue. "We had a lot to offer. It could have been a great marriage."

What will NASCAR do about 'Buschwackers?' CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- When Denny Hamlin crossed the finish line in Mexico City, he won a Busch Series race for the first time. His victory also left full-time Nextel Cup drivers at 3-for-3 this season in the lower-level developmental series. Since NASCAR has no rule against its topflight drivers moonlighting in the junior varsity races, the "Buschwackers" are dominating the Saturday shows. It's an alarming trend for the full-time Busch Series teams, who are struggling to compete and beginning to wonder what NASCAR plans to do about it. "This could go on all year," said Joe Custer, general manager Haas CNC Racing. "I don't think anyone would disagree that it's not in the best interest of the Busch Series for the Cup guys to win 35 races this year." Yet that's a very real possibility. A year ago, Cup drivers combined to win 23 Busch races. That left 12 wins for the Busch drivers, and Martin Truex Jr. accounted for half of them while driving a car fielded by Dale Earnhardt Inc. So of the remaining six races won by Busch regulars, only two of them actually came from teams not associated with a top-level Cup program. Chances are, its going to get only worse. What will NASCAR do about 'Buschwackers?' Hamlin wins NASCAR's Busch Series race The number of Cup drivers who plan to participate in Busch events has increased. And seven of them - including Kevin Harvick, Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch and Hamlin - plan to run the full schedule this season. The reasons for running both series vary. For Cup rookies Hamlin, Reed Sorenson, J.J. Yeley and Clint Bowyer, it's extra seat time to get them up to speed. But for Greg Biffle, Matt Kenseth and the other regulars who pick and choose Busch races, it provides more time to test tires, shocks, springs and other setups before the main event. "It's almost like a pitcher for the New York Yankees who has Friday night off, so he decides he'll just go down to (Triple A) Richmond and see if he can get some work in down there," Busch Series car owner James Finch said. "It's not fair and there's a lot of easy ways to stop it. But NASCAR doesn't really care because they are too busy counting their money and selling their Busch tickets." Finch points to the Cup parade two weeks ago in California, when Buschwackers claimed the top 11 spots. The 12th-place driver was Todd Kleuver, in a car owned by Cup-powerhouse Roush Racing. That left Haas' Johnny Sauter in 13th place as the highest-finishing Busch regular not affiliated with a top Cup team. Finch's driver, Jason Keller, was 15th in California. The Cup drivers help the Busch Series boost attendance and television ratings, and that's one reason NASCAR is hesitant to limit their participation. But NASCAR spokesman Jim Hunter says excluding the Cup drivers would lead to a short field in the Busch race. Finch doesn't dispute that, but he blames NASCAR for the shortage of teams. "They can't get a full field because they just about ran everyone out of the sport," Finch said. "You can't convince me that some guy who drives a truck all week wouldn't consider loading up a car and coming out to California if he thought he had a chance to make the race. "But why bother? The Cup guys are going to take all the spots in the field, so it's just a waste of time for the little guys trying to break into the sport." NASCAR has plenty of options if it chooses to rein in the Cup drivers. The sanctioning body could stipulate that drivers who don't commit to the entire Busch schedule can run in only five-to-seven events. Or, it could change the tires used in the Busch Series, thus eliminating half the data Cup drivers are collecting. Custer suggests making the Cup drivers ineligible for prize money. As is, the Busch purses pale in comparison to what is paid out on Sundays. When Cup drivers dominate the Busch field, it drastically reduces the earnings for everyone else. He also takes exception to the Buschwackers getting one final Cup practice right before the Busch race. It gives them a warmup but sends the Busch regulars in cold. "I sure wish Johnny Sauter got to run 'Happy Hour' in a Cup car," Cutter said. "I don't think there's any doubt it would help him." But Finch would prefer set limits that keeps the top talent out of the Busch Series. "NASCAR needs to do something to make it so we can compete," Finch said. "We can't right now and the way it's going, NASCAR's going to end up with four guys owning every car in the sport because everyone else will have gone out of business."

Said Wins Pole For Busch Race In Mexico City
KFDM COOP posted a topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Said wins pole for Busch race in Mexico City MEXICO CITY -- Boris Said, a road-course specialist born in New York, won the pole and two Mexican drivers placed in the top five Saturday for the Telcel-Motorola 200, the second race south of the border in NASCAR's Busch Series. MEXICO CITY COVERAGE When Mexico City was listed on the '05 Busch Series schedule, it wasn't the most anticipated trip of the season. But that has changed this season. Many of NASCAR's biggest sponsors have a big presence in Mexico, making it a market the sanctioning body can't ignore. Although fewer Nextel Cup regulars are entered this weekend in Mexico City, By the Numbers shows that outsiders still rule when the Busch Series hits the road courses. Mexican drivers Carlos Contreras, Adrian Fernandez and Jorge Goeters recently answered some questions about this week's race in Mexico City. Said averaged 1 minute, 28.295 seconds while reaching a top speed of 102.665 mph. Most of the top finishers from Friday's practice took the track after him but were unable to post faster times. It was Said's second pole in six Busch Series starts. His first came during his Busch debut in June 1998 at another road course, Watkins Glen. Said finished fifth in Mexico City a year ago during the Busch Series' first race in Mexico. He said he didn't think his time would be good enough for the pole, but that Mexico City's tricky Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez played a role. "How big and heavy these cars are, with 43 guys, it's difficult,'' he said. "The S [curves] are difficult, the last turn is difficult.'' Second was Denny Hamlin who finished 0.134 seconds behind Said with a speed of 102.509 mph. He finished fifth in the points last year, his first full season. "This track, I love it,'' Hamlin said. "I like short-track racing, road courses and flat tracks and this is a combination of all three of those.'' Johnny Sauter went around the 2.518-mile course just once but his time of 1:28.449 was good enough for third place. Mexico's Adrian Fernandez, an open-wheel racing veteran who knows the Mexico City course better than almost anyone else, took fourth. He was followed by Mexico's Jorge Goeters, who took the pole last year. "I wanted to make sure I got into Turn 1 very good,'' Fernandez said. "I did all that very good so from there to the end I needed to make sure that I didn't make mistakes.'' Saturday's times were slower than the 1:27.696 posted by Goeters, who set a track record of 103.366 mph in winning the pole. Qualifying was interrupted several times by crashes, many coming in curves NASCAR inserted into the long front straightaway to reduce accidents around the first turn. That's the fastest part of a track that was originally built for open-wheel racing. Stacy Compton shredded the back end of his No. 59 Ford after careening into the grass and spinning into a wall on the seventh turn. "This was a great racecar,'' Wood lamented. "But they can put some things on the other racecar to make it just as good.'' Officials used a group qualifying format associated with road-course races, but not in place for several years in the Busch Series. Jon Wood, who finished first in practice, had trouble keeping his No. 47 Ford on the course a day later, settling for 17th. The group qualifying meant the fastest cars from Friday started last Saturday, encountering a track that was especially hot and slippery. "I don't know how this qualifying stuff is going to work,'' Wood said before taking the track. "I'm a little confused about that.'' -
