Little Cypress-Mauriceville cruises past Vidor VIDOR - The Little Cypress-Mauriceville basketball team could feel the pressure from being on the road Friday night. The Bears knew just how much was on the line as they faced the Pirates in a pivotal District 20-4A contest, but they showed no sign of hesitation in defeating Vidor 62-45. The victory places LC-M and Vidor in a tie for the third and final playoff spot in the district. "It was a must-win," LC-M coach Darin Harley said. "We had to win the game, or we didn't give ourselves much of a chance. Now, we're right back in it. We're tied for third. We have to just take care of our business, and I think we'll be in good shape." LC-M (16-9 and 3-3) had control of much of the contest as it took a 34-19 lead into the half, and led by 15 second-half points from forward Tyler James, the Bears held the pace the rest of the night. Looking and waiting is what the Bears did offensively throughout the contest, as they patiently passed the ball around the perimeter until they found the best shot. And it worked to perfection. James finished with 17 points, while center Cameron Spencer scored 13, and forward Seth Harley added 12 to give the Bears three players in double figures. "We were patient in the half court, and I think that made the difference in the game," Harley said. "We have a size advantage with most teams that we play - not all but most - and sometimes we're our own worst enemies in the way we shoot 3s. But we have to be able to pound the ball inside, and I think we did that tonight very effectively." For the Pirates (10-14 and 3-3), it was the third consecutive loss after winning their first three district games. Vidor lost in overtime to Central last week and was blown out 71-27 by Ozen on Tuesday. Star guard Noah Cole was the only Vidor player in double figures with 13 points, and the Pirates were outrebounded 35-15. Vidor's next contest will be next Friday against Lumberton, which is 2-4 in district after losing to Ozen on Friday. "We need to get back on a winning track," Vidor coach David English said. "We lost a tough one, and then we've gotten beat pretty soundly these last two games. So, we just need to get things back on track." The Bears will play at Lumberton on Tuesday, and will be looking to avenge a loss they suffered against the Raiders earlier in the district season. "That's another game that we have to go in focused," Harley said. "We weren't focused last time we played them, and they beat us and hats off to them. We have to go into their place into a hostile environment like here (Vidor) and perform the same way."

PAISD posts athletic director job It turned out a special meeting wasn't needed to get Port Arthur Memorial's vacant athletic director-head football coach position officially on the job market. School district officials posted the job on the Texas Association of School Administrators web site without waiting for the school board to officially accept former AD Dean Colbert's two week-old resignation. Superintendent Willis Mackey said earlier this week the district could not advertise the opening or accept applications until the board accepted the resignation at its next scheduled meeting, Jan. 26. Some trustees voiced concern that by waiting, the district might be missing out on some good candidates and talked of calling an emergency meeting just to accept the resignation. “I requested a special meeting with Dr. Mackey (superintendent Willis Mackey) at noon today to accept Colbert's resignation,†board president Julia Samuels said Friday afternoon. “We did not have the meeting, because we were directed by the conservator (Texas Education Agency conservator Stephanie Cravens) to direct Dr. Mackey to go ahead and post the job. She said we could do it now and wait until our regular meeting to formally accept the resignation.†The job qualifications, according to the TASA listing, would seem to diminish the chances of a pair of hometown candidates who have let it be known they planned to apply: interim AD Shane Sinegal and Memorial offensive coordinator Kenny Harrison. The listing says “master's degree from an accredited college or university preferred, along with a valid Texas teaching certificate. Neither have a master's degree. It also calls for five years successful teaching and coaching experience. The salary range is listed at $50,818 to $72,455. Colbert was being paid an annual salary of $76,875.

MIKE OWENS AND WIFE IN HENDERSON THIS MORNING (SATURDAY), DECISION COMING SOON... Tyler Lee athletic director and head football coach Mike Owens and his wife Kathy woke up early this morning and are currently touring the city of Henderson as Coach Owens tries to make his decision on whether to take the job in Henderson or remain at Robert E. Lee High School. Owens told me "My wife and I have so much to digest, I'm going to have my decision on whether to stay or accept the job in Henderson by sometime late-Saturday morning, or early in the afternoon." Meanwhile, Henderson superintendent Tommy Alexander says he feels "very positive" about his all-day meeting with Coach Owens. Superintendent Alexander said Owens was able to meet with a lot of people, from the principal, curriculum people, and members of the HISD school board during his nearly ten-hours in Henderson on Friday. Mr. Alexander continued to stress his school district has a school board meeting scheduled for noon on Monday with every intention of recommending the name of Mike Owens as their next athletic director and head football coach. I've also had conversations with TISD athletic director Danny Long, and TISD school board president Andy Bergfeld, and they both stressed they will try and do what is necessary to keep Coach Owens, unless HISD's offer is "borderline-ridiculous". Owens, who led Tyler Lee to the Class 5-A Division Two State Championship in 2004, has been the head coach at Lee since 1996. Other quotes from superintendent Alexander... "Coach Owens was able to get a good picture of the positives and weaknesses we have in our athletic department, and what needs to be done. We know he'll accentuate the positives, and we know he's the man to help alleviate and correct any weaknesses." "Henderson I.S.D. represented itself very well on Friday, we've done our best, we've done our job well, and now we'll just have to wait and see." "There's a lot of speculation about the overall financial package we've offered Coach Owens, and although we've put together something that we hope will bring him to Henderson, I think there's more to it than that. I think it could be the challenge of turning this program around, along with something here and there that he can do here in Henderson that he can't do with the system they have in Tyler."
