  10. Pirates ready to greet Sabine Pass Van Wade The Orange Leader DEWEYVILLE — Looking to get the home crowd rockin’ early this season, the Deweyville Pirates will welcome the Sabine Pass Sharks Friday night at Pirate Stadium in the 2009 high school football opener for both squads. The Pirates are looking to improve under second-year head coach Russell McDaniel after going 4-5 overall last year, 2-4 in District 23-2A play. “The kids have really worked hard this summer and put forth a lot of effort,†said McDaniel. “You hate to bring up those cliches, but we’re approaching things one week at a time.†The Pirates return five starters from each side of the ball from last season. Veteran tailback Keeton Addison leads the offensive charge after rushing for 850 yards and nine touchdowns. The Pirates are also moving All-District offensive lineman Channing O’Bannion to fullback and he’s looked good in the scrimmages. Last year’s junior varsity quarterback Michael Williams will move into the starting spot on varsity. All-District linebacker Jacob Burris and secondary man Eric Avila will spearhead the defense early on. The Pirates took on Kirbyville and Silsbee in az mixed scrimmage and faced Hull-Daisetta last week. “We got a lot out of both scrimmages,†said McDaniel. “You move a step forward in some areas and a step back in others. That’s too be expected, with some of the young kids learning a lot in a short period.†McDaniel was glad his Pirates were able to see some speed and size in their scrimmage tilts. “I thought we moved the ball well and played pretty good defensive against Kirbyville and Silsbee, because they have a lot of speed and strength,†said McDaniel. “Against Hull-Daisetta, I thought we fared well in the controlled part of the scrimmage but not so much in the game situation portion. It got better as the night went along.†Sabine Pass is led by former Deweyville assistant Jason Thibodeaux. The Sharks went 1-6 overall last season, 1-4 in District 23-1A after dealing with the wrath of Hurricane Ike. Things are looking up in Sabine Pass, as the Sharks’ stadium has been renovated. The Sharks are led on offense by quarterback Drew Carlos and wide receivers Justin Nguyen and Cole Williams. “The Sharks will certainly give our kids a test,†said McDaniel. “The kids are just anxious to get the season started and so is the staff. It’s hard to beat Texas high school football.â€

  14. ? Who, I haven't heard that.
  15. WOS played that bad against Vidor last year to. Should be a good game. If WO-S don't have the 2 Offensive Linemen back then Nederland probably takes it.
