  1. 'Road Warrior' Lady Bears sink WO-S Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — It was quite a Friday for the Lady Bear “Road Warriorsâ€. After sweeping two matches at the Barbers Hill Tournament earlier in the day, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears took down a much-improved West Orange-Stark unit 25-10, 25-15, 25-23 at Mustang Gym Friday night. They will take on both Barbers Hill and Baytown Sterling in the tourney today. “It’s great to start 6-0,†said long-time Lady Bear coach Vicki Castino. “We’re getting in a lot of early matches. We’re getting in seven in three days. That’s what we love about the Barbers Hill Tournament.†Senior standout Christine Sicktich led the Lady Bears against WO-S (1-1), notching 14 kills, 14 points and five aces. Ashton LaVergne posted eight kills with Megan Kemp and Shelby Apperson adding six apiece while both Elissa Tate and Amy Laughlin added four apiece. Kellie Tilley set up the offense well and had 14 points and three aces. Allison Walker had seven points and three aces and Kalyn Harkness contributed six points and two aces. “We’ve got the making of a pretty good little team again this year,†said Castino. “There’s plenty to work on this time of year. We’re making a lot of unforced errors but that’s to be expected. They’re going to get some good experience at the Northwest Tournament next week.†WO-S coach Gwen Kelly-Hall, whose team whipped Port Arthur Memorial Tuesday to start the season, received nine kills, four points and an ace from Ishaneka Gant. Ashleigh Kelly had six kills, five points and an ace while Johnesha Sims and Crystal Haynes had three kills apiece. Mishanequa Warnell added six points. In their two wins at Barbers Hill, Sicktich had 20 kills, 20 assists and eight aces. Tilley notched 30 assists. Tate posted 12 kills, eight aces and two blocks. 5. Volleyball shouldn’t be played on Fridays By Evan Mohl The Daily News Published August 14, 2009 High school volleyball players get the raw end of the deal in Texas. Every Friday night, teams take on two opponents: the adversary on the court and the proverbial Texas king and behemoth, affectionately known as Friday night football. University Interscholastic League rules state volleyball can play one contest per week during the school week and one after the school week has finished, which goes from Monday morning until when school lets out Friday afternoon. The trend then developed to play Tuesdays and Fridays. It allows for extra practice time Saturday with a day off Sunday and adequate rest time between games. Wednesdays were avoided in the past because of religious significance while no one likes to play on Monday, trying to deal with rust after a day off. “It’s a format that has been going on for years,†UIL assistant athletic director Traci Neely said. “It has worked because it satisfies coaches’ wants. If you want to stay in form, practice on Saturday is necessary, and everyone hates playing on Mondays.†Still, scheduling on Friday doesn’t make sense, and it’s just not fair. Parents, fans and students must make a tough decision every Friday — football or volleyball. Thousands choose the tradition and pageantry, packing stadiums to the brim. It leaves sparsely filled gyms, where hours of hard work and sweat go unnoticed, unreported and unappreciated. How many, honestly, saw a volleyball game last fall? How many got to see Megan Pendergast (Nebraska) hammer a spike, Haley Jacob (Oregon) dive for a dig or Kaylee Hawkins (Sam Houston State) slam the ball over the net? The Friday conundrum goes even further. The lack of attendance means less money for the volleyball program and school. That just hurts the athletes in myriad ways like uniforms, road trips and practice equipment. “Sometimes, you wish it could be different, especially for the girls’ sake,†Santa Fe coach Anna Marie Milligan said. “But you learn to deal with it.†Programs have tried to combat the issue with earlier start times on Fridays. It works to some degree, particularly for students and the athletes who then can go to football games. But parents and other community members can’t attend 4:30 p.m. games due to work and other obligations. Obtaining referees that early and getting the traveling team to miss school also causes issues. “There are so many things to consider when scheduling,†Neely said. “It can make things tough to figure out.†Detractors will point to the fact that volleyball has games on Tuesday. But those contests are generally less attended because it’s the middle of the week. Most have work the next day or meetings to attend or other conflicts. Volleyball, as a result, is left on the fringe, with scarce attendance numbers. “You always want to increase the exposure,†Neely said. “But it would take a massive movement to change what we have now, and I don’t know if those people who attend football games on Friday would come to a volleyball game on Saturday.†It’s worth a shot. A move from Friday night couldn’t hurt and would at least give volleyball a fair shot. And that’s not what volleyball currently has.

  15. BCLL dream of Williamsport falls short Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader The Comeback Kids of Cardinal Country could not muster another rally Thursday. This time it was the Texas West All-Stars out of San Antonio who came from behind and eliminated the dreams of the Bridge City Little League All-Stars, 6-4, in Waco. Texas West is now headed to Williamsport, Penn. and the Little League World Series. Steven Cardone came in relief on the hill and also had a home run in the top of sixth to preserve the win. Cardone pitched four innings and did not allow a run on one hit with five strike outs. “Cardone — he was lights out,†BCLL Manager Ronnie Shugart said. “All you can do is tip your hat to the kid. He did his job and he was the difference in the game.†BCLL was up 4-2 until the top of the fifth when Texas West decided it would be their night to rally. Nick Smisek led off with a walk and took second and third when Drew Brooks singled to right. The single drove BCLL starting pitcher Chase Shugart out of the game due to the 85-pitch limit. Chase Rutledge came in to pitch for Bridge City and Travis Daves welcomed the new pitcher with a RBI double to right to make it 4-3 BCLL. Rutledge then got two quick outs before Taylor Scarborough ripped a two-run double to center field to make it 5-4 Texas West. Cardone added his home run in the top of the sixth to pad the lead and crush the hopes of the game’s feel-good story. Cardone got BCLL out in order in the bottom of the sixth. “It was one heck of a summer,†Shugart said. “I would not trade a moment for anything. The crowd was unbelievable. I could not imagine a major league game being more exciting for us. I am so proud of the guys. They absolutely have no reason to hang their heads.†Texas West took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Daves blasted a home run to center field. It did not take BCLL long to respond and grab the lead right back. BCLL scored four runs in the bottom of the first as Jonah Watts drove in the team’s first run of the game on a RBI single to center. The single scored Chase Shugart who had reached on a fielder’s choice. Rutledge then stepped to the plate with two runners on base and smacked a three-run homer to left to make it 4-1. The home run plated Blake Pruett, who had doubled, and Watts.
