Lady Mustangs ready to spike Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — Long-time West Orange-Stark Lady Mustang volleyball coach Gwen Kelly-Hall has set up a very strong non-district schedule for the Lady Mustangs. Why? The Lady Mustangs welcome back a few strong players from last year’s varsity squad but Coach Kelly-Hall also wants to see the young ones get plenty of early experience before WO-S battles it out in one of the toughest 3A districts in the state of Texas. “Class 3A volleyball is so strong in our area, and state-wide too,†said Kelly-Hall. “Our district is so competitive. All of the kids get to know each other well throughsummer leagues and such. We have some nice rivalries built p in ourdistrict and they’re friendly rivals.†The Lady Mustangs have strong early tests with scrimmages against BeaumontOzen and Beaumont West Brook this week and will start the regular season next week by hosting both Port Arthur Memorial and Little Cypress-Mauriceville. “We’re going to belooking atsome good early-season tests against some good 4A teams and 5A Memorial,†said Kelly-Hall. “We’re also in three good tournaments again. We definitely want to see where we’re at early on and see where we need to improve the most. We have some time there with district starting in late Septemeber.†The Lady Mustangs will compete in the Evadale Tournament, the Buna Tournament and the always loaded YMBL Tournament in Beaumont. Kelly-Hall has some nice leadership back including Ishaneka Gant, Joneshia Sims and Miquendria Warnell. “We have some good veteran leadership in those three,†said Kelly-Hall. “We’ve got some promising youngsters as well that are fighting for roster spots. We’re looking for a good year and the kids seem excited about it.â€

[Hidden Content] BC, OF Missing Key Players After moving from DeQuincy, Kaleb Kellogg had a solid baseball season and was expected to contribute on the football team. But the rumors of him returning to DQ are true because he hasn't come out for practice. OF's Jace Statum was the starting QB last season but is passing on football after verbally committing to A&M to play baseball.

BCLL one step away from LLWS Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — One step away. The Bridge City 12 year old All-Stars are headed to Waco to participate in the Southwest Regionals to advance to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Penn. BCLL won the Texas East State Tournament to advance to Waco and now has all of Southeast Texas on their side. “I was there and I still don’t believe what we have done,†Coach Ronnie Shugart said Wednesday. “This group really is not smart enough to know they can lose. When we started this thing when the kids were seven, we were doing travel ball and getting beat to death in Houston. I kept telling the kids the score does not matter. Now it really does not matter because they play until the umpires say ‘Ball Game.’†BCLL was practicing for the last time Wednesday before heading out to Waco on Thursday. “One of the special things about this team is they really love to practice,†Shugart said. “There are some days I cut practice short and they ask why because they still want to keep going. They love the game of baseball and love to work.†This team has played about 400 games together and accomplished something no other Bridge City Little League team by winning a state championship. “When we started years ago we did it for one reason, to make a run to the Little League World Series,†Shugart added. “I have been telling them every year that when they were 12 we would go to Williamsport. Now we are not going to quit until they officially tell us we cannot go. They truly believe they are going.†Shugart is looking for BCLL to accomplish a few cliches in Waco, win with pitching and defense. “If we can continue to do that and scratch a few runs together, I think we will be OK,†Shugart added. “The support has been amazing. Every where we go, if we have our hats on, people ask if we are a part of this team and wish us good luck. The kids know they are representing our whole region and they are very proud of that.â€

Anahuac looks to make it two in a row By Robert Chambliss Correspondent Published August 5, 2009 ANAHUAC — Last season the Anahuac Panthers ended their four-year drought of first place district finishes by posting a 8-2 regular season record and a 6-0 District 23-2A record. The Panthers went on to play one more game, but lost to the number two team Kirbyville in the state playoffs. But all of that is behind the Panthers now. Time has gone on and the memories were let go. What happens next for the Panthers? Well, according to head coach Darrell Barbay and key players, practice. “Right now we are just trying to see what we have,†Barbay said. “Our guys look in decent shape right now, but we are not where we need to be. “We will get better though. You can count on that. “So far, our skills guys look good and so does our line. Our defense will be stronger this year, I can tell, and overall it looks like we are going to be a better team.†Key offensive tackle Alfredo Rodriguez believes that their strength will be a key to the Panthers’ success. “Well right now, we are strong,†Rodriguez said. “We are playing overall better than last year, and we are running the plays better. “I feel that if we hit the weights and maintain our strength, we will win a lot of games.†The Panthers graduated a few key players including quarterback Jacob Pesina and halfback Deior McNeil, but that doesn’t bother probable quarterback and starting middle linebacker Cody Johnson. “This year we must continue to work,†Johnson said. “We must continue to play football better, practice hard and learn the plays. If we can do these things, I feel we will be all right. “As far as the quarterback position goes, it is still in the air. Every day I am out here working hard trying to get the position. I look at it as helping us, because we are all working hard to get the position. “If I get it, I will do whatever I can to help lead my team to a win.†Replacing a back like McNeil seems like an impossible feat after the numbers he put up, but for new halfback Dewan Childress, this is not a problem. “Well this year our team is improving in a lot of different areas,†Childress said. “Our youngsters are learning the program as well as some of us older guys. “We will be doing good come season start, when all of the players have completely learned the system.†The Panthers continue through the next two weeks in their two-a-day program. They scrimmage at Hamshire-Fannett Aug. 15 and against Tarkington at home Aug. 20 before opening the season at Houston Kinkaid Aug. 28.
