Felts headed to be a Longhorn Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — It has been a dream since he was little. Now Jacob Felts is living his dream as he verbally committed Wednesday to play for fame-baseball coach Augie Garrido and the Texas Longhorns. “Ever since I was little I dreamed of playing there,†Felts said. “I never thought I would get the chance to be a Longhorn. I have been a UT fan my whole life. I went and met Augie and he had so many great things to say about their philosophies. Texas is a winning team and I want to be a part of that.†The Longhorns are coming off a season which ended at the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. Texas lost the series in three games to the LSU Tigers. Felts is hoping to join a long line of successful Texas catchers including Taylor Teagarden and Cameron Rupp. “Teagarden was my guy,†Felts added. “Now I want to go in and pick up where Rupp leaves off after next season.†Felts, the Defensive Player of the Year on the All-Orange Leader Baseball Team, batted an amazing .471 last season with 37 runs, 48 hits, 14 doubles and six homers. He was on base 59-percent of the time and slugged .804. “I am so proud of him,†Orangefield coach Jeff Bennett said. “This shows the caliber of player he is. Jacob has received so much attention over the last three years and he is still such a humble individual. That is what makes me more proud. He does not seek the accolades yet gets them because he puts in the extra hours.†Felts made his decision a day after Nederland ace Kirby Bellow made the decision to head to Austin. Bellow was 10-1 on the year with 46 strike outs in 32 innings in the playoffs. “It will be awesome to have Kirby there with me,†Felts said. “We were on our way back from playing in Florida and both said how awesome it would be to both be there.†Felts put an end to the thought he would follow fellow Bobcat Jace Statum to Texas A&M. Statum verbally committed to the Aggies last week and although said he would allow Felts to make his own decision, he did say he would do some recruiting. “Jace and I were rivals when we were little,†Felts said. “We always seem to be on different teams growing up and it was always a big game. It is going to be renewed now.†Bennett, as with Statum, applauded the summer league system which allows players to be followed when college coaches have a chance to watch games and not worry about their own teams. “UT does not really recruit this area,†Bennett said. “The upside to Jacob is unbelievable. College coaches do not want players that are high maintenance. Jacob’s story starts when it is a Thursday before we play Bridge City on a Friday in the regional quarterfinals and he is out there 10 minutes early to get in 30 to 40 extra swings in.†Felts now can go out and play the game he loves without any pressure. “You try to not let that bother you when on the field,†Felts added. “It is hard to go out and play games and still try to impress someone. I felt like I had waited long enough to decide so I jumped on it.â€

WO-S' Haynes And Franks Verbially Committ To.....

Franks, Haynes commit to OU Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — West Orange-Stark Coach Dan Hooks once joked with James Haynes and asked him if he was going to go straight to the NFL. It might have started to seem that way with all the buzz Haynes and WO-S teammate Trey Franks have been getting these days. Haynes has one stop to make before the NFL comes calling and that is in Norman, Okla. Haynes will not be alone either. Haynes and Franks both verbally committed Wednesday to play football at Oklahoma University. This ends a very hectic recruiting process for two of the most sought after players in the state. “Now I don’t have to worry about that during my senior season,†Franks said. Haynes said the commitment was a long time coming after trips across the country and having Franks around will only making things easier. “If I am lost, it is great knowing someone will be lost with me,†Haynes said. “We will both be in a new environment and new state.†The Sooners, who played for the BCS Championship last year, are certainly getting two exciting players in Franks and Haynes. The duo helped guide the Mustangs to the state championship last year in track. Franks won the 100-meter dash and was a part of two gold winning relay teams. Haynes took home two gold medals, one in the 400-meter relay and the 800-meter relay. Haynes ran 20 times as a junior in football for 197 yards and three scores and also hauled in 15 catches for 191 yards and three more scores. Franks had a team-high 34 receptions for 605 yards and five touchdowns. Both Franks and Haynes were also standouts on defensive as defensive backs. “These guys had so many people talking to them, it comes to point when it is time to make a decision,†Hooks said. “OU is getting two very fine athletes. They will be great.†Hooks’ Mustangs program will now have four players in the Big 12 in 2010 if all goes right. Earl Thomas will be a junior at the University of Texas while Jacoby Franks, Trey’s brother, will be at Texas Tech University. Deon Beasely, also from WO-S, will be a senior this year at UT. Tommy Chavis also graduated from WO-S and played his senior season this past year at Missouri. “That is phenomenal for a school our size,†Hooks said. “It is a credit to our program and to our players. I am not sure anyone can really match that.†Franks could have the opportunity to play across the field from his brother who is a receiver with the Red Raiders. “That would be a little weird,†Franks said. “We are both very competitive so that game would be crazy for us. There would be some trash talking going on.†Haynes also relishes in the idea of playing against guys he has known his whole life. “It is already a rivalry between all those schools,†Haynes said. “It will be unreal to look across the field and see someone you know.†Haynes also hopes people understand his decision to leave the state of Texas and play for such a bitter rival like Oklahoma. “I hope everyone honors the decision I made for myself,†Haynes said. “It was my decision to make and I did what I thought was best for myself.†Franks, who said he has known he would choose OU for at least a month, added he is now ready to prepare for the Mustangs’ season. “Now it is time to get in full gear for the Mustangs,†Franks said. “I have been going up there and working out every day. You have to get ready for Coach T’s (Cornell Thompson) two-a-days. This is a big weight lifted off my shoulders and now I don’t have to deal with any of that.†The problem is now Big 12 opponents will have to deal with one dynamic duo. -

OU.....Details later. Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader Two of the state's most sought after recruits have made their decision. West Orange-Stark's Trey Franks and James Haynes verbally committed to Oklahoma University on Wednesday. The duo will be seniors for the Mustangs this season and both were part of the state championship track team at WO-S as juniors.

UIL may let football coaches run 7-on-7, select sports teams The time could be approaching for high school coaches to decide just how much time they want to spend with their athletes. As part of the annual UIL press conference at the Texas High School Coaches Association Coaches’ School, UIL executive director Dr. Charles Breithaupt said the organization is studying the possibility of allowing high school coaches to coach non-school teams. That would mean, for example, a high school football coach could coach a seven-on-seven team of his players, or a girls’ basketball coach could coach a select team of players from her program. Breithaupt, who spoke to the media at the Hilton Austin in connection with the conference that brought together more than 12,000 of the state’s high school coaches, said he believes the coaches fall into three categories on the issue of coaching non-school teams. “I think 40 percent would tell you, ‘Let us coach, we’re already having to be there anyway,’ †Breithaupt said. “Some are saying, ‘Enough is enough.’ There’s another group saying, ‘I’d rather us be coaching them than somebody else.’ †High school coaches are allowed to open school facilities for athletes to work out during the summer, as well as coach athletes for up to an hour per school day during the off-season. But Breithaupt pointed out that high school athletes’ participation on teams not associated with the school has increased to the point that events take place just about every day of the year. If high school coaches vote to approve coaching non-school teams, they could be signing up for a never-ending gig. Breithaupt said there are far more questions than answers at this point. “So how far do you go?,†he said. “Should coaches be allowed to coach 12 months? Where does it pick back up? What does that do to the sport?†Though he spoke specifically about the possibility, Breithaupt didn’t offer a target date for athletic directors to vote on a proposal. “It may be a long study,†he said. “We’re not going to get in a hurry. We’re going to spend some time and get this right.†Breithaupt and UIL athletic director Cliff Odenwald addressed a variety of issues during the press conference, including: * A review of the steps the UIL took in reaction to the outbreak of the swine flu in Texas in May. * The results of steroid testing during the last two years. The UIL has revealed that, of 45,000 athletes tested, there have been 19 positive tests and three unresolved cases. Also, the UIL’s steroid testing budget has been cut from $6 million to $2 million, meaning the organization will test fewer students in the next two years. * The decision made by 1A athletic directors to align in two divisions at the next realignment in February. A referendum item is up for vote by 2A athletic directors and 4A athletic directors are set to “revisit†the possibility.

5A title games may return here Cowboys home makes Reliant an option again AUSTIN — The popularity of the Dallas Cowboys' new Arlington home may allow Reliant Stadium to host the Class 5A state championship football games for the second straight year. With North Carolina and Texas set to play the first basketball game in Cowboys Stadium history on Dec. 19, the University Interscholastic League was forced to look elsewhere for a place to play its two 5A championships. UIL executive director Charles Breithaupt said Monday the title games will take place at either Reliant Stadium or San Antonio's Alamodome. On Monday afternoon, Reliant Park's Web site already touted the Dec. 19 championship game doubleheader with the note, “More information coming soon!†The entry, which has been taken down, was on the site in error, according to Reliant Park general manager Mark Miller. Reliant Park officials, however, hope they will be able to put the notice back up soon. “It's a great community event,†Miller said. “Everything we heard last year was very positive. We are very interested.†This will be the fourth year the UIL has played its two 5A championship games at a predetermined single site. The championships were played at the Alamodome in 2006 and 2007. Championship game sites for other classes are determined by agreement of the coaches involved the week the games are played. Reliant Stadium played host to the 5A title doubleheader last year, with Katy beating Wylie for the Division II championship and Hightower falling to Allen for the Division I crown before a combined crowd of more than 40,000. “I've always been an advocate of freedom of choice,†said Katy coach Gary Joseph. “If the UIL is going to take control, I prefer a closed stadium. “I enjoyed Reliant. It's an easy ride for us, but San Antonio is easy, too. I felt our fans deserved an opportunity to watch us play close to home.†The 2008 games nearly fell victim to Hurricane Ike. Damage from the storm left Reliant Stadium's roof inoperable for the remainder of the football season. The UIL opted to keep the games at Reliant under the open roof, then dodged a shaky weather forecast in the days leading up to the games. “They were very well attended,†UIL athletic director Cliff Odenwald said of last year's two games. “We were sweating bullets with the hole in the roof.†The UIL has stated its interest in playing the 5A title games in indoor facilities, ruling out centrally located college venues Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco and Kyle Field in College Station.
