JHS coach arrested in three-state dogfighting sting Staff, wire reports A Jacksonville High School assistant football coach is suspected of having ties to an interstate dogfighting ring. Jerry “Scotty†Chism, 34, of Longview, and seven other residents of Gregg and Panola counties were arrested in Wednesday’s dogfighting raids across East Texas by federal agents after being named in a federal grand jury indictment handed down on June 30. Jacksonville school officials were unavailable for comment Friday. More than 30 people from Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas have been arrested and more than 200 dogs seized in the busts carried out Wednesday. “I commend the agents and officers who have worked very hard on this investigation,†U.S. Attorney John M. Bales. “In due time, we look forward to presenting all of the evidence that they have collected in federal court. I also appreciate the significant investigative assistance provided by the Humane Society. “ According to the FBI, agents and officers executed a federal arrest warrant in Panola and Gregg counties. Nine dogs, mostly pit bull terriers, were seized during a search of property in rural Panola County. The indictment resulted from an investigation which began in October 2008, and was launched by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Office of Inspector General (USDA-OIG), the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Texas Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Richard L. Moore is prosecuting the case in coordination with U.S. Attorney’s Offices in the Eastern District of Oklahoma and Western and Eastern Districts of Missouri. “As evidenced through this and other recent investigations, animal fighting activities exist throughout the state and the country,†Special Agent-in-Charge James L. Mendenhall stated in a release provided to the Daily Progress. “The OIG will continue to pursue substantive allegations of animal fighting, and is committed to work in concert with other federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to that end.†This indictment is part of a multi-state investigation that also resulted in 19 additional defendants being charged in separate cases in three other districts. “Dog fighting inflicts serious injuries and death upon dogs that are bred and trained to be dangerously aggressive,†said Matt J. Whitworth, acting U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri. “Like many dog owners, I am appalled that such a cruel and inhumane activity occurs in our state. We will vigorously prosecute those who illegally practice this so-called sport.†Dog fighting is banned throughout the U.S. and is a felony in 48 states. If convicted, each faces up to five years in federal prison and fines of up to $250,000. Nine dogs, mostly pit bull terriers, were seized during a search of property in rural Panola County. A licensed veterinarian was on-site to examine and provide any necessary care to the dogs. Also on-site were representatives of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), who have been consulted during the investigation. The Panola Watchman contributed to this article. Anahuac loses close at state tourney From sports staff reports Baytown Sun Published July 10, 2009 COLLEGE STATION – Anahuac’s 7-on-7 football team pushed one of the state’s top teams to overtime before losing Thursday at the Fox Sports Southwest state tournament. It turned out the 35-34 setback to Brownwood, a semifinalist in this tournament a year ago, was the first of three close losses suffered by the Panthers in pool play Thursday. Anahuac will play Lorena at 8 a.m. today in the start of the 32-team single elimination Small School (Class A-3A) tournament. Brownwood, which won in overtime when it stopped an extra point by Anahuac and made one of its own, went 3-0 to win the pool. Anahuac, making its first appearance in the state tournament at Texas A&M, went 0-3, coming up a total of 11 points short. Those included a 21-14 loss to McGregor and a 26-23 setback to Rice Consolidated. “Everything was close,†said Anahuac coach Michael Broussard. “It was our kids’ first time to play in a tournament like this. We just came out here to play ball.†Zach Smith led the Anahuac offense and Trevante Thomas topped the defense, getting a pair of interceptions. Justin Albritton, Cameron Mitchell, Cody Johnson and Wyatt Raymond caught touchdown passes from quarterback Braxton Mayes and Mitchell also had an interception. “They played hard, but probably our biggest downfield threat was playing quarterback,†Broussard said, alluding to the fact that Mayes, normally a wide receiver was playing quarterback because of a leg injury. In today’s bracket play, a team stays alive as long as it wins. The Anahuac-Lorena winner will play the winner of the game between Bandera and Hardin-Jefferson in the second round. The Small School championship game is set for 1 p.m. today. The Big School (Class 4A-5A) tournament begins with pool play at 1 p.m. today and winds up Saturday afternoon. While District 13-5A is the district with the most representation here with five schools – Klein, Klein Collins, Klein Forest, Spring and Tomball – District 21-5A has only one school competing – West Brook – and District 19-4A has none. UIL steroids testing finds 8 positives out of 16,000 Associated Press AUSTIN — Another 16,000 steroids tests of Texas public high school athletes caught eight cheaters. The University Interscholastic League on Friday released the latest results of the 2-year-old program. They show that about 45,000 total tests have confirmed 19 cases of steroids use. Given so few positive results, state lawmakers have agreed to scale it back over the next two years. The Legislature slashed spending for the program from $6 million to $2 million. Besides the eight confirmed tests disclosed Friday, the UIL says there are another 62 cases deemed “protocol positives.†That happens when an athlete has an unexcused absence on the day they are selected for testing or refuses to provide a urine sample. The latest results were from tests conducted from January through May.
