  4. Shaq wants to win ring for LeBron INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- Shaquille O'Neal has one purpose in Cleveland: bring an NBA title to LeBron James and the Cavaliers. "My motto is very simple," the 15-time All-Star center said Thursday. "Win a ring for the King." Acquired in a trade last week with the Phoenix Suns, O'Neal was introduced Thursday by the Cavaliers, who believe he can be their missing piece. The city of Cleveland has been waiting since 1964 for one of its three pro sports franchises to win a championship. During a 30-minute news conference that was more of a TV talk show featuring Shaq, the 37-year-old star said he just wants to fit in with a Cavaliers team that won 66 regular-season games last season but was eliminated in the Eastern Conference finals by the Orlando Magic. "We have everybody in place," said O'Neal, who has just one year left under contract but feels he can play three more seasons. "There's no excuses. We've just have to get it done." O'Neal walked to the dais through a welcoming tunnel of kids from an area summer camp. He was presented with a No. 33 jersey and given a pair of winter boots and a snow shovel by Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, who is sparing no expense to bring the Cavs a championship. Cleveland is the first cold-weather city O'Neal has played in after NBA stops in Orlando, Los Angeles, Miami and Phoenix. There is a greater sense of urgency in Cleveland because James is entering his final year under contract. O'Neal insists this is "LeBron's team" and he's merely with the Cavs to put them over the top. "I'll fit in just fine," he said. "They had a damn good team here already." O'Neal won three NBA titles with Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers from 2000-02 and another with Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat in 2006. O'Neal believes No. 5 is possible with "the great LeBron James." O'Neal joked that his three sons were excited he would be paired with the league's reigning MVP. "My sons love LeBron more than they love me," he said. "I'm just a little jealous about it."

  12. 13yo Accepts Football Scholarship [Hidden Content] Jamie Newberg Rivals.com Football Recruiting Talk about it in the Message Boards In college football recruiting today, it's never too early. The entire process has been accelerated. In fact, it's now so fast that one rising star has decided where to play his college football even though he hasn't played a down of high school football. The player is Evan Berry of Fairburn, Ga. Berry is the younger brother of Tennessee super safety Eric Berry. Evan Berry has decided to follow in the footsteps of his brother and father after accepting a verbal scholarship offer to play for the Volunteers and coach Lane Kiffin. "Yes, I committed to Tennessee," Evan said. "It's the only college I know right now and it seems the best for me. My dad went there and my brother is there now. I know I can do the same things there. I have a real friendly relationship with the coaches there. I know I don't know them too well, but I know I will have plenty of time to get to know them." Berry, only 13 years old, will be a ninth grader this fall at Creekside - the same high school Eric attended. He has played his recreational ball for the Fairburn Flames. He was a star quarterback, running back and free safety. He was coached by his father, James Berry. "Evan plays on a different level than everyone else," James Berry said. "He's a technician with the ball in his hands. He just fits at quarterback and at safety. He's quick and fast and has a natural instinct for handling the ball." Berry has a fraternal twin, Elliot. Evan currently stands 5-8 and 145 pounds while Elliot is 5-11. "I am not sure why Elliot is bigger but he just recently decided to go on a huge growth spurt," James Berry said. "He's so fast and has such natural instincts to find the open spot. He's very instinctive on defense and a good tackler. Elliot is more like Eric. Like I said, Evan is in another league of his own." Speaking of Eric, how would the Berry's father compare the twins to their older brother at the same stage? "I coached all three to this stage and I can say that Evan and Elliot are further along than Eric was at 13," James Berry said. "They are such gifted athletes. I don't want to sound like the dad who's always bragging, but they are. They are blessed. I am blessed. And I am so proud of all my boys. But the thing I am most proud of is that they are such good students." This season Evan and Elliot will have to earn their way to the varsity at Creekside. That's how they want it, and they will work hard to accomplish that first goal. "I am hoping to play quarterback and in the secondary this season," Evan Berry said. "Elliot wants to play running back and linebacker." Still, it's scary to think that this duo will only be high school freshman this fall. "Hey, we just have to take it one day at a time," James Berry said. "Things happen and four years is a long ways away." While Evan has made his early decision, Elliot has not. In fact, at this time he favors another SEC program. "Right now Evan favors LSU. He really likes their track program," Evan Berry said.

  14. Bears confident; working hard in summer Van Wade The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — LITTLE CYPRESS — The only place to go is up for the Little Cypress-Mauriceville football program. First-year head coach Randy Crouch knows that and so do the Battlin’ Bears that were working out in the LC-M Fieldhouse Tuesday morning. The Bears will check into the 2009 campaign a little bit older and will be growling to put an end to a 15-game losing streak. Incoming junior offensive lineman Nick Lucia and sophomore-to-be receiver Preston Armstrong were pumping some iron and hitting the track to help themselves ready for what looks to be a grueling, hot August coming up with two-a-days really not that far away. “Everyone is really excited,†said Lucia. “We’ve been working hard already this summer.†“It’s hot right now, but you have to go through it,†said Armstrong. “Putting on the pads and helmets is great and all but it’s what you have to do before that point that counts. You have to stay on top of your game and conditioning at this time of the year is the most important thing.†Both Bears agree that there is plenty of excitement in the air with Coach Crouch calling the shots. “Coach Crouch instills a lot of confidence,†said Armstrong, who started a lot of games at receiver last year as a true freshman and who was also a basketball standout. “It was a quick jump for me last year. One year I’m playing in middle school then all of a sudden I’m on the varsity. Everything happened so quick last year. Everything happens so much faster on Friday nights. This year, I’m catching on well and I’ve been doing a lot of catching up, especially with my strength and conditioning.†Lucia is thrilled about possibly being a stronghold on the offensive front. “We like what we’re doing, especially with Coach Crouch’s new schemes,†said Lucia. “It’s taking some time, learning the new plays but that’s been fun. Coach Crouch is really pushing us and believes in us. i know we’ve had some talent the last couple years but we didn’t use it all. Coach Crouch is motivating us to be the best that we can be.†Coach Crouch has been busy as well. He’s helped design a new helmet as the Bears will go back to the gold helmets that will have a little twist to them. Stay tuned. Also, Battlin’ Bear Stadium will have new light poles that will illuminate the stadium better. “It’s that time of the year where you are always thinking what you need to do next,†said Crouch. “You want to stay ahead of the game as much as possible.†Crouch is pleased to have his varsity coaching staff complete. Troy Bolton will be the offensive coordinator while Mike Pierce will serve as defensive coordinator. The other top-notch assistants include David Kendrick, Allen Deshazo, Johnathan Friend, T.J. Reed and former Orangefield assistants Roy Farias and Eric Peevey. “I couldn’t be happier to have those guys,†said Crouch. “There’s a lot of energy with those guys there and the kids really seem to respond to them. We’re looking forward to the season ahead.†The Bears will pick up equipment Aug. 3 and will start conditioning drills and on Aug. 7, will see their first contact drills. The Bears have some nice scrimmages lined up. They will take on Texas City Aug. 15 at Crosby High School. They will host the Silsbee Tigers Aug. 21 and will tenatively travel to Baytown Aug. 27 to face Baytown Lee. The Bears open their 2009 campaign at home Sept. 4 against West Orange-Stark. “We’re really enthusiastic about what’s ahead,†said Crouch. “As a coach, you want to see improvement from week to week and that’s what the kids are striving for. We’ve got a tough scedule in front of us. Our district is going to be highly competitive. The kids are looking forward to that challenge.†print this story comment on this story
