Memphis: No proof ex-player cheated MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Memphis was unable to find proof a former player cheated on his SAT exam in its internal investigation of NCAA allegations against the men's basketball team. The investigation report, released to The Associated Press and other news outlets Tuesday under a public records request, details Memphis' internal investigation into allegations that a former player -- widely reported to be Derrick Rose -- allowed a stand-in to take his SAT test and of grade tampering. School officials argue that even if the NCAA's Committee on Infractions believes a former player cheated, the program should not be penalized because the school was unaware of any wrongdoing. Memphis was first notified by the NCAA by e-mail in May 2008, one month after the Tigers lost to Kansas in the NCAA championship game, that star point guard Rose had an invalidated standardized test score the previous year at Chicago's Simeon High School, multiple sources with direct knowledge of an e-mail told ESPN.com. Most names in the report released Tuesday were redacted by Memphis because of privacy concerns, but multiple sources have told ESPN.com that representatives of Rose did tell Memphis he took the SAT in question. The report said the school had no reason to suspect the SAT was fraudulent until notified by Educational Testing Service that the player's score had been canceled. That letter came May 5, 2008, after Rose's only season at Memphis. "The university ... took all reasonable steps to confirm that [name redacted] had met eligibility requirements," the report states. Memphis will present its findings to the Committee on Infractions on Saturday in Indianapolis. Former coach John Calipari is expected to participate by phone. The NCAA also alleges an employee at Rose's high school changed a grade so a C would show up on his transcript instead of a D. The player then used the test score and the transcript to enroll at Memphis. A 2007 investigation by the school into the grade-tampering charge determined that even if the grade had been changed, he was still eligible for admission. Athletic director R.C. Johnson has said the school checks out potentials athletes, but has refused to detail efforts to investigate. Kentucky officials were aware of the allegations when they hired Calipari and believe the coach was open and honest about the situation. Johnson interviewed several high-profile coaches when Calipari left, but couldn't lure them to Memphis. So he turned to 31-year-old Calipari assistant Josh Pastner. Pastner, who has said he knew nothing about the investigation before being hired, was excused from participation because of a previous commitment. NCAA officials notified Memphis on Jan. 16 of the "knowing fraudulence or misconduct" that occurred in 2007-08. The Tigers won 38 games that season and were the national runnerup. Calipari, who left Memphis and signed an 8-year, $31.65 million contract with Kentucky on March 31, has been assured by the NCAA that he is not under investigation. Rose, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 NBA draft and the current rookie of the year, has issued a statement through his attorney Daniel E. Reidy and won't comment any further on the investigation. On Monday, Bulls executive vice president for business operations Steve Schanwald said the team stood by Rose. "Where the truth lies, who knows?" Schanwald told Comcast SportsNet Chicago. "But Derrick says it didn't happen, and I take him at his word.

Lady Mustang relay quartet readying for Austin Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — WEST ORANGE — When the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs’ 400 and 800-meter relay teams started the 2009 track campaign, they weren’t even on the map. Well, now their maps lead to Austin and the Class 3A Track & Field Championships Saturday at the University of Texas. Not bad. Not bad at all, if you consider that the quartet consists of all underclassmen in junior Brittany Brantley, sophomore Johnesha Sims, junior Hannah Mobley and sophomore Danyale Thomas. “It’s been great to watch this young group mature and and succeed the way that they have,†said long-time Lady Mustang coach Patrice Ivory. “They’ve gotten better each and every week. There work ethic is awesome. They have such great chemistry. Each week was fun, watching their confidence grow. They couldn’t see it early on but we kept getting them to visualize it and have they ever.†The four turned in a time of 49.19 in the 400-meter relay at the 3A Region III Meet to finish right behind Waco Connally and were also second to Connally in the 800-meter relay, running a 1:43.68. The Lady Mustangs were on Connally’s heels in both races. Connally won the 400-relay in 49.12 and the 800 relay in 1:42.58. Of course, every relay has its own distinct personalities. Brantley, moved into the WO-S district this year after coming from Virginia and is the first leg in both relays. “It’s so much fun here, everyone immediately treated me like I was family,†said Brantley. “They needed one more for the relays this year and I was glad to step in.†As for as running that opening leg? “You want to put your team up front as much as possible so getting out the blocks fast is key,†said Brantley. “Then there is the handoffs. We’ve done really well this season with very few mistakes. We’re going to have to be perfect Saturday.†Sims receives the baton from Brantley as the second leg in each event. Sims is the one when things get too serious, she’ll loosen up her teammates with her sense of humor. “I love cheering my teammates up and if that means being funny, then that’s the way it’s got to be,†said Sims. “They think I’m the jokester and I can live with that. Coach (Toby) Foreman is always aggravating me and I just aggravate him back and that gets everyone going too. We’ve had a good year, hopefully we can bring home a couple medals.†Mobley, the third leg, is the experienced veteran, one that qualified for regionals as a freshman a couple years back. She’s the serious one, all of the time. “Our hard work, it’s really paid off,†said Mobley. “Once we got to district, we thought we could reach the goal of getting to state. We’ve been so fundamentally strong, we’re all pretty fast and our handoffs have been great.†Mobley has seen the Lady Mustang program rise again. “We’ve went from scoring 20 points at district last year to sending two relays to state this year,†said Mobley. “In the past, I’ve concentrated more in individual events but I really liked what I saw with our relay teams this year. It’s fun doing things as a team, that’s what has really made this year so special.†Thomas, the District 21-3A champion in the 100 meters as well, has been thrilled about running the anchor leg. “We all have our roles and we do them well,†said Thomas. “When you get that baton last, if you’re in front, the goal is to stay in front. When you’re behind, you know you have some catching up to do. Once we won at district, our confidence grew. At regionals, we knew if we could stay close to Waco Connally, we’d be in good shape. Gosh, those girls were good, but we’re right there with them.†Thomas has enjoyed the WO-S surge this year. “This year, we have more girls out,†said Thomas. “Everyone is excited about the track program and hopefully we’ll have even more come out and compete next year.†One thing for certain, when the Lady Mustangs run Saturday, it’s probably going to be very warm. They will run the 400-relay at noon and will compete in the 800-meter relay at 1:25 p.m. “It’s going to be tremendously hot and we’re preparing them for that,†said Ivory, who won the 100 meters at state for Stark High School in 1977 and was second in the 200 meters. “It’s a whole new deal in Austin, with that packed stadium and all of the onlookers. I bet there will be more folks there than ever because of the meet being in June. Everyone is out of school, both high school and college. Plus, there will be a lot of scouts there too.†Ivory is thrilled about how far the quartet has gone this season. “I knew they had it in them,†said Ivory. “Just getting to the State Meet is such a tremendous achievement. It would be awesome if they could bring back some medals. The most beautiful thing about it is that they’re all back next year.†The Lady Mustangs will be joined by their stout boys track team, which will compete in five events. The Mustang 400-relay quartet of Josh Gloston, Phillip Jones, James Haynes and Trey Franks will run at 12:10 p.m. after placing first at regionals (41.78). The 800-relay unit consisting of Ed Ivory, Gloston, Haynes and Franks will run at 1:35 p.m. after nabbing first at regionals (1:27.08). Jones, who was second at regionals in the 110-hurdles, will run at 12:55 p.m. and Franks, the Region III 100-meter champion (10.73) will compete at 1:15 p.m. Haynes, who was second at regionals in the long jump (22-7 3/4) will jump at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

New Lee coach ready for some football By Dave Rogers Published May 31, 2009 Marvin Sedberry, Jr., says he’s accomplished much in his three-plus months as the new head football coach at Baytown Lee, not the least of which involves his own head. “I’ve got more gray hair than I had. Maybe they’ll quit calling me young,†said the coach who turns 31 this weekend. After 17 years with white-haired Dick Olin occupying the head coach’s office at Lee, anyone this side of Green Acres was bound to look young by comparison. But the north Texas native has been running hard trying to play catch-up since he arrived with two seasons of high school head coaching experience on his ledger. Olin, who led the Ganders to 11 playoff seasons in a tenure that ended with last year’s 2-6 campaign, is only part of a long and strong Baytown football tradition Sedberry will be measured against. Two weeks ago, the Ganders took part in a 7-on-7 tournament at Cy Falls. Although they were without four key players because of track and went 0-3, Sedberry came away enthused. “We only had two guys who played on the varsity last year,†he said. “But a lot of kids got to play, get on the field and get experience against varsity guys, see how things move faster. “And I think we got better as the day moved on. “We’re going to throw the ball some next fall and this was my first time to see our kids get out and compete, just see if we can throw it and catch it. And we got to compete against somebody besides ourselves.†Sedberry still hasn’t seen any of the Ganders in pads, except on videotape. He said he wanted to hold spring training, but the statewide swine flu scare was among reasons he backed off. “I was really wanting to have spring ball and then when that panic came out, I didn’t want to get into a situation where I’d start, the state would stop me and I’d lose days.†Instead, Sedberry opted to take the extra week of two-a-days in the summer, meaning Lee will open preseason practice Aug. 3 and suit up for the first time Aug. 6. The Lee coaching staff for 2009 still isn’t complete. The new coach said he had hired old friends to work as offensive and defensive coordinators but they won’t be coming to town for good until the summer. “I definitely want my whole staff here,†he said, revealing that also helped him decide to pass on spring drills. “I felt like we were able to get a bunch done in the (daily in-school athletic) period. “Plus, with construction going on around here, we only had one field to practice on this spring.†As the school year neared its end, Sedberry said he had only three coaching vacancies that he’d needed to fill, with two of those going to his new coordinators. “I’ve worked with each one for eight years,†said the man who coached Fort Worth Poly to a 7-12 record the past two seasons. “When I was offensive coordinator (at Dallas Lake Highlands), my receivers coach was the guy who’s coming to be my offensive coordinator here. My defensive coach, we’ve worked together since my first year in coaching.†Some folks Sedberry is looking forward to working with this summer and fall are seniors Xavier Ruben, Tim Smith, Trey Murray and Dandrick Jackson. The first two are linemen, the second two linebackers. Sedberry calls them “The Big Four†because they have garnered plenty of interest from college recruiters. Murray has already been offered a scholarship by Kansas State, according to Rivals.com. Others who have impressed the new coach are two-year varsity players Trent Warren and C.J. Mixon, both juniors, senior defensive end Mac Havel and junior slot back William Brewer. “The guys have really impressed me in the weight room,†Sedberry said. “The thing that impressed me from Day One is they work hard. “Look at their increase from their first weightlifting cycle. They’ve done just about everything they can do.†Now it’s up to Sedberry and his new coaching staff being sure they do all they can do for the players. Part of that is getting them help in the form of more players. The new coach impressed others with his ability to increase student participation at Fort Worth Poly and he’s up to his old tricks here. “We’ve gotten quite a few (new players) out,†he said. “It hurt us not having spring football, but I told them to come on out and start lifting and get to know me. “I’ve got a list of 20 guys. If we can find a player out of that 20, it’ll help us out.â€
