What a series this will be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
Battle of the Bayou BC, OF face-to-face in regional quarterfinals Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader So everyone knows what the series will look like between Orangefield and Bridge City, now it is a matter of where. The Bobcats (22-9) and Cardinals (23-4-1) will meet in a three-game series starting at 5 p.m. Friday for Game 1 with Game 2 to follow shortly after the first game’s completion. Game 3, if necessary, will be played at 7 p.m. Saturday. The field where the two teams will meet has not been decided yet. This will be the third meeting of the two District 21-3A rivals. The Cardinals won both games in the district schedule, 4-2 in Orangefield and 9-1 in Bridge City. Orangefield will probably have to deal with a familiar foe in Game 1 in Bridge City ace Matt Hicks. Hicks (12-2) has hurled 70 2/3 innings this season with a 1.39 ERA to go with 117 strike outs and 15 walks. Hicks threw a five-hitter Monday night in a 13-3 victory over Cameron Yoe and he struck out 10 batters. Hicks will be working against a very potent Orangefield batting order. The Bobcats are hitting .349 on the year with 240 runs and 15 RBI. Jacob Felts is having a monster junior season with six homers, 37 RBI, 13 doubles, 46 hits and .489 batting average. Jace Statum is not far behind with a .463 batting average with 46 runs, 44 hits, 24 RBI, 12 doubles, four triples and three homers. Zach Peevey, the lone senior on Orangefield’s roster, is batting .368 with 29 RBI while Quinton Evans is hitting .345 with 24 RBI. To show how well Orangefield hits the ball, Derrick Evans is normally in the No. 9 hole and he hits .325 with 22 RBI, seven doubles, three triples and two homers. The Bobcats as a team get on base 45-percent of the time. Orangefield faces a Bridge City team which is sporting a 2.39 team ERA. Cardinals pitchers have struck out 223 batters with only 74 walks and six homers given up. Caleb Kellogg could be a possible starter in one of the three games. Kellogg has worked 16 innings for Bridge City and has a 3.50 ERA with 27 strike outs while Daniel Wallace has a 2.73 ERA in 25 2/3 innings with 26 strike outs. Forrest Zoch is carrying a 3.36 ERA in 25 innings with 27 strike outs. While it is the Orangefield offense which is more known for scoring runs, the Cardinals are actually not that far behind. Bridge City has scored 214 runs and has a .317 team batting average. Anthony Cessac, who was 4-for-4 against Cameron Yoe with three doubles, is hitting a team-high .425 with 15 RBI and six doubles. Grant Encalade is hitting .405 with 17 RBI and four doubles. Luke Rhodes and Hicks each have 19 RBI to tie for the team lead while Blake Hubbard has 16 on the season. Facing the Bridge City offense will be a Orangefield pitching staff with a team ERA of 2.70. Bobcats pitchers have struck out 196 batters. Felts has a 0.97 ERA in 43 1/3 innings and has struck out 46 batters. Brock Whitson has had a solid season with a 2.06 ERA in 54 1/3 innings. Whitson has struck out 44 batters. Statums has been getting back to form after an arm injury. Statum has a 2.31 ERA in 39 1/3 innings while striking out a team-high 54 batters. Chase Angelle and Zach Peevey could also see time on the hill for Orangefield in the series. The winner of this series will move on to the regional semi-finals. Robinson is waiting to find out who they play between Mexia and Spring Hill in the regional quarterfinals.

LC-M pulls off upset over No. 3 Buda Hays, 5-4, in 9 Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader COLLEGE STATION — Win No. 402 for Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears coach Steve Griffith probably made his blood pressure go to dangerous levels. The Bears were down 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh to No. 3 Buda Hays before scoring four to tie it to set up a game-winning hit by Stefan Leger in the bottom of the ninth to give LC-M a 5-4 win. LC-M will now face their familier rival Brenham Cubs in the Class 4A Region III Regional Semifinals later this week. Tim Barry in the bottom of the ninth hit a one out single to right and then moved to second on a wild pitch. Leger then stroked a single down the right field line and Barry slid head first to send the Bears (24-12) the Rebels home with a 26-2 record. The Rebels led 4-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh before the Bears offense finally came alive. Taylor Thompson led things off with a single to right before Wade Estes drew a walk. Scott Vaughn then plated the Bears first run of the game with a RBI single to make it 4-1. After Shane Waddell drew walk, the Rebels got two quick strike outs. Stefan Leger put the ball in play and Buda Hays did LC-M a favor by committing an error to allow Estes and Vaughn to score to make it 4-3. Stefan Cloeren then made sure the night was not over with a RBI siingle to tie the score at 4-4. LC-M had a golden opportunity slip away in the bottom of the eighth. Thompson led off with a double off the fence and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Estes. The Rebels then intentionally walked Vaughn. Buda Hays then got a double play on a squeeze bunt attempt by Waddell. The ball was popped up and caught for the second out and courtesy runner Joey Tutt was forced out at third. Waddell pitched a great game for the Bears. Waddell went six innings and struck out six batters with four hits and two walks. Waddell only gave up two earned runs. Dallas Brown was the winning pitcher of the night. Waddell started off in grand fashion sitting down the first two Rebel batters in the first inning. Waddell struck out Nick Desantiago and got Phillip Abreo to fly out to centerfielder Hunter Gonzalez. The Rebels then put two runners on base after two straight LC-M errors. Colten Booth then made the Bears pay for the mistakes with a two-RBI double to right field to make it 2-0 Buda Hays. The Bears put the first two batters on base in the bottom of the first as Tim Barry and Stefan Leger led off with back-to-back singles. Jonathan Gonzales then got a fly out by Stefan Cloeren and a fielder’s choice by Matt Johnson. Gonzales then got Taylor Thompson to strike out to end the threat with runners stranded on the corners. The Bears avoided more damage in the top of the second. Waddell got two quick outs before a walk and then ended the inning as Desantiago flew out to Cloeren at shortstop. The Bears picked up their second hit of the game in the bottom of the second as Scott Vaughn hit a one-out single to center field. Vaughn was stranded at first as Gonzales got a strike out and fly out to end the inning with Buda Hays up 2-0. Booth picked up his third and fourth RBI of the game in the top of the third with a two-run blast to left field to make it 4-0. The Bears stranded their fourth runner of the game in the top of the third as Cloeren was left on first after reaching on a fielder’s choice. Barry led the bottom of the third off with a walk. Waddell got his first three-up, three-down inning in the top of the fourth on a strike out and two fly balls. Gonzales followed up with a three-up, three-down inning of his own in the bottom of the fourth to keep Buda Hays up 4-0. Waddell finally figured out how to get Booth out in the top of the fifth. The Rebels put two runners on with two outs on a fielder’s choice and an infield single. Waddell got Booth to fly out to Dallas Brown at first base to end the threat. Gonzales sat down the side in the bottom of the fifth. Waddell sat the Rebels down in order in the top of the sixth. He picked up his fifth and sixth strike outs of the game in the inning before getting a fly out to end the inning. Gonzales got his 12th straight out in the bottom of the sixth, sitting down the Bears in order again on two fly outs and a ground out to shortstop. The Rebels put two runners on in the top of the seventh but relief pitcher Dallas Brown got out of the jam with a double play.

Bears to tangle with red-hot Buda Hays Van Wade The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — Putting together a superb effort to knock off the Crosby Cougars in their Class 4A Region III bidistrict series, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears turn to an even taller task tonight when they tangle with the Buda Hayes Rebels at 7:30 p.m. in the area round at Texas A&M University’s Olsen Field. The Rebels (26-1), ranked No. 3 in the last Class 4A Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association poll, has won 20 consecutive games and breezed through District 17-4A unscathed. Hays took down a competitive Waller squad 8-3 and 10-3 in its bidistrict series last week. The Rebels only loss came to Austin McNeil 10-3 back on March 3. Hays has outscored their opposition 292-97 for the season and have close to 60 home runs. “They hit the ball very well, up and down their lineup,†said LC-M head coach Steve Griffith, who has 401 victories to his credit. “They’ve got a couple powerful kids with 15 or more homers.†The Rebels’ “ringer†is certainly catcher Nick Desantiago. The senior backstop has 17 home runs and is headed to the University of Texas. He was 4-for-5 with a big home run in the clincher over Waller. “He’s a good one,†said Griffith. “He’s just as good defensively as he is on offense.†The Rebels will still likely miss the services of senior outfielder Brandon Lawrence. Lawrence, who has 15 homers, was leading the squad with a .560 average before breaking his ankle three weeks back. The cupboard is far from bare though as the Rebels have other big hitters in infielder Anthony Pesina, Philip Abreo, Ryan Slaughter, Colten Boothe, Trace Gandy, Luke Guerrero and Rusty Logue all have inflated averages. The Rebels also have two solid go-to pitchers in seniors Jon Gonzales and Chris Maldonado. “Their pitching is very good too,†said Griffith. “They don’t have a guy that’s going to wow you by throwing shutouts and striking out a lot of people. They’re very consistent though and their defense is really good. We’ve scouted them about three times and they’re a very solid baseball team.†Griffith was happy with the way the Bears (23-12) responded in coming back and taking Game Three against Crosby 4-2 Saturday. The Bears won Game One of that series 5-1 before falling 12-11 late in Game Two. Senior Tim Barry had a huge Game Three, hitting two home runs and earning the win on the hill. The Bears have a nice veteran senior team with the likes of the experienced Barry, Stefan Cloeren, Stefan Leger, Matt Johnson, Dallas Brown and Wade Estes leading the way. Plus, the pitching of Shane Waddell and Taylor Thompson has been strong as well. “I was glad to see the kids respond like they did Saturday against Crosby,†said Griffith. “Crosby has an excellent team and they gave us a good series. I had the wrong shoes on last Friday when we lost and I think that gave us bad luck but I had the right ones on Saturday.†Due to the swine flu pushing back the baseball playoffs, the area round series across the state have to all be one-game deals, which is fine with Griffith. “Even if that didn’t happen, we’d probably would’ve tried to flip for one game,†said Griffith. “Anything can happen in those one-game deals. Beating a team two-out-of-three times can be tough if you’re playing a team that’s won 26 out of 27. Our kids are really looking forward to this challenge and see how it all works out.†The LC-M-Hays winner will face the Brenham-Barbers Hill winner in the regional quarterfinals later in the week. Brenham downed Elgin 12-1 and 14-0 in bidistrict while Barbers â€ill defeated Vidor 13-3, 1-6, 10-1. -
